I've seen a lot of mainstream outlets putting out #SpaceForce pieces with headlines like, "Trump wants to put soldiers in space" or that question whether Trump got the idea from a movie.

Sick joke, brah. But you aren't helping educate people and you're spreading misinformation.

I have had so many people read stories in the mainstream press and ask me why Trump is doing this bc the stories provide no context and treat Space Force like a joke.

But even if you think Trump is a buffoon, there IS context for this move and reasons to do it beyond cool uniforms and Star Wars references.

I mean, let's start with the Space Corps proposal, backed in large part by the bipartisan pair of @RepMikeRogersAL and @repjimcooper .

These guys know their stuff, are passionate advocates for military space, and have forced the DoD to look at old problems in a different way.

We wouldn't have Trump talking about a Space Force without the Space Corps proposal. So let's stop acting like this was an idea that just germanated from Trump's brain because he saw a new movie. There was work involved in this.

Let's also stop with this "putting soldiers in space" BS. No one likes your Starship Troopers fan fiction.

A Space Force or Corps, whatever, would exist to man, train, and equip military space missions. It's about making sure we have the right people and tech for the job.

This does not mean that we are sending people out into space to shoot laser beams at each other.

The public deserves to know what conflict in space actually looks like at this point. It's nation-states fielding new tech so they can screw with our GPS, not ray guns.

I get the inclination to try to make these stories sexier. I cover military space and for the most part, the subject is dry. Even boring. Hard to find a human element in.

But people will read your "troops in space" headline and think that's the whole reality. And you will have done them a disservice because this story really does matter, and it's in the public interest to really understand why this could happen and what effect it could have.
