A wiser man than me once put it this way: Just because a mouse lives in a cookie jar doesn't make him a cookie.

And so, just as surely as you are not a car or a house, a child in the uterus is not her mother, but her own, separate, unique biological entity, a life.

The "heartbeat" bills enacted, or being considered for enactment, in several States are part of a larger program of education. You see, for five decades, the abortion business trade groups and businesses have depended on a comfortable ignorance taking hold of the American mind.

That comfortable ignorance treats the uterine human as subhuman so that acts that would otherwise be inhuman are transmogrified into the delicacy known as "health care," such transmogrification made necessary so that abortion can be a palate pleasure for the American conscience.

This progression of knowledge and understanding answers an ignorance fundamental to the decision of the Supreme Court in Roe v. Wade. There, the exceedingly loquacious Harry Blackmun revealed the black hole at the center of the Court's actions:

"We need not resolve the difficult question of when life begins. When those trained in the respective disciplines of medicine, philosophy, and theology are unable to arrive at any consensus, the judiciary ... is not in a position to speculate as to the answer."

There's disingenuous dishonesty about Blackmun's declamation. There was, at the time of his arduously awful opinion, no dispute on the biological question of life.

True enough that in long ago times -- when a person was fortunate to survive influenza and could anticipate living to the ripe old age of 35 or 40 -- there was uncertainty about the gestation of life in utero.

But that uncertainty is from a period when a claim that the moon was made of green cheese was no more capable of refutation than a claim that a child suddenly came alive at "quickening" or at birth.

At the time Blackmun lied his way into history by the pretense that there was uncertainty about a question of biology that science had already plainly resolved, geneticists taught that an individual and unique human being came into existence at only one point in time:

conception; embryologists and fetologists confirmed all the essential aspects of biological life were present in the embryo and in the fetus.

Yet Blackman, the pretentious writer, made a pretense of uncertainty and ignorance about the uterine human and concluded that "the judiciary ... is not in a position to speculate as to the answer."

We may, graciously, pretend that Blackmun honestly reasoned that the question of life was unanswered when he wrote Roe. We may do so even though so requires us to ignore medical texts, scientific studies, and the lectures of a thousand teachers and professors.

But even if we grant Blackmun the grace of such a presumption, we cannot pretend that science has not continued to march forward, that certainty about the biological nature of human life hasn't been confirmed again and again.

But we are now working against ignorance in the general public that bears the Grade A approval granted to it by Blackmun and his six unholy brethren in their dishonest decision.

Along with earlier laws, such as mandatory disclosures about pregnancy, fetal development, and the provision of ultrasound images, States now take the next step in peeling back the five-decade night of ignorance brought down on this Nation by the Supreme Court in Roe.

"Yes," these laws proclaim, "something there is about a heartbeat that tells us all, 'I am here, I am alive, and warrant care, concern, protection, and equal status in the law.'"
