@EugenieSage @mfe_news @jacindaardern @DavidParkerMP @jamespeshaw @NanaiaMahuta Thanks Eugenie – and acknowledge all the work you have done in Parliament! The problem with the MFE video though, is that... (thread)
@EugenieSage @mfe_news @jacindaardern @DavidParkerMP @jamespeshaw @NanaiaMahuta it trivialises the climate and ecological emergency we’re in by reinforcing the idea that people just need to make small tweaks to their daily lives and everything will be OK.
@EugenieSage @mfe_news @jacindaardern @DavidParkerMP @jamespeshaw @NanaiaMahuta It also places the responsibility for fixing ecological breakdown on regular people. Belief that these enormous, existential threats can be countered by us tweaking our consumptive habits is wrong and it’s dangerous.
@EugenieSage @mfe_news @jacindaardern @DavidParkerMP @jamespeshaw @NanaiaMahuta It's a story that lets government and industries off the hook and, at worst, shames people who don’t have the time or resources to change their consumption for things they can barely avoid doing because of the ecologically-destructive society and economy they were born into.
@EugenieSage @mfe_news @jacindaardern @DavidParkerMP @jamespeshaw @NanaiaMahuta It also ignores the enormous financial and political power of business interests including the fossil fuel industry and agriculture industry that have successfully been lobbying for inaction for decades while conveniently blaming environmental problems on individuals.
@EugenieSage @mfe_news @jacindaardern @DavidParkerMP @jamespeshaw @NanaiaMahuta To really meet the ecological and climate crisis head on, systemic change is needed, led by Government and driven by people power.
@EugenieSage @mfe_news @jacindaardern @DavidParkerMP @jamespeshaw @NanaiaMahuta We encourage people to join movements and groups like @ExtinctionR, @schoolstrike4c1 and @GreenpeaceNZ, because it’s when we stand together, that we can achieve real change.
@EugenieSage @mfe_news @jacindaardern @DavidParkerMP @jamespeshaw @NanaiaMahuta @ExtinctionR @schoolstrike4c1 This Government has continued to extend oil and gas exploration permits, has refused to put cameras on fishing boats and failed to regulate the dairy industry’s pollution, among other things.
@EugenieSage @mfe_news @jacindaardern @DavidParkerMP @jamespeshaw @NanaiaMahuta @ExtinctionR @schoolstrike4c1 While the intentions behind the video might be good, it feels very misleading. As @extinctionR say, governments need to tell the truth about climate change. Next #WorldEnvironmentDay, we’d love to see a video all about how the Government is leading on creating systemic change.
