Roberts didnt say the citizenship question was unconstitutional. He said Commerce misrepresented its motives. The Trumpist position is that the state should be able to flagrantly lie to the public about decisions affecting millions of people, and Roberts is bad for stopping this.
“The state can lie to the public about its motives in the performance of its responsibilities” is also the position of the other four Republican appointees.
Also to be clear, Roberts would have been fine if they hadn’t been *so obvious* about the fact that they were lying about their motives that there was a paper trail proving it.
