2) An undeniable truth: Those who have and share knowledge, as well as withhold it, can improve their reputation and influence, thus their power. This power can control the collective perspectives of their supporters and therefore, their wealth. Here's a hint: it's not money.

3) Even before persuasion has any effect on conscience, it is often preceded by suggestion.

Suggestion targets the subconscious, an often undefended weak point in the human psyche; when the subconscious is persuaded to accept, it is then forced to act.

4) Did you know that social anxiety disorder is a hoax?

5) Even qualified psychiatrists find it a challenge to differentiate between mild forms of social anxiety disorder and “normal” shyness; and when an epidemiological study is done by unqualified interviewers the study is subject to gross exaggeration.

6) Yet, despite the grievance of human error and ineffective surveying, the study is published, and even suggests easily attributed and vague symptoms to an unsuspecting public to recognize in themselves. How noble.

7) But wait, there are countless ways in which “society” also reinforces in us such things as anxiety, stress or other mental illnesses. Perhaps you’ve heard of social media and influencers, who exist to make us feel inadequate while selling us sh*t we don’t need.

8) With such finely curated “social feeds” full of world travel, expensive material goods, and pixel perfect photographs, how can we not think they are stress free and happy all of the time? And why can’t we be? (side note: they aren’t, and photoshop exists)

9) Next we have our lovely television programs, movies and pop-culture magazines. These essentially exist to normalize things which always seem to have a net-negative impact on society. a.k.a social engineering.

10) If all of that wasn’t enough, we also have commercials and marketing campaigns to normalize rising rates of anxiety, depression, suicide, etc… which offer to solve suggested misery with a pill and/or therapy... how convenient.

11) Ever listen to those commercials, by the way?! They rip off an alarming amount of “side effects” while the people are “happy” and/or “recovering.” Chances are, you’re going to need some supplemental medication to counteract those “side effects.”

12) Anxiety is a part of life. Those without fear would not survive long before unwittingly walking into traffic. Yet, as evidence shows, even in the writings of Hippocrates, this fundamental human quality can work against us.

And they know it.
