If you haven't read the #1776Commission report, please do. If you (like me) grew up with conservative Christian education, a lot of this will be very familiar to you, just now at the national level. If you didn't, you need to know that this is what kids are being taught.
That said, it's a very intimidating 45 page read, and I fully understand not wanting to waste your time reading this crap, so I'll be posting some highlights to this thread.
Starting off strong with well-known language to inspire patriotic/nationalistic pride. "Americans are always the good guys" will hold as theme through the whole document. #1776Commission

So as my fellow #twitterstorians have documented quite potently, the #1776Commission report is propagandistic white supremacist nonsense. But I might be most offended by its depiction of education & educators, at this moment in our history no less. A quick thread:
For nearly a year now, educators—especially at the secondary & primary levels, but we higher ed folks as well—have been doing everything possible to take care of our young people amidst these horrific times & help them respond to all that's in our society & world.
That means fundamental emphases of care & community amidst a deepening global health crisis. But it also means responding to both the year’s protests & activisms & to white supremacist sedition & insurrection, to the worst & best of our history & society.

NEW: Trump has appointed former Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant to his #1776Commission—an effort to preserve revisionist history in schools that focuses on elite white male "heroes" while sanitizing the nation's history of slavery, genocide and oppression. 1/

President Trump's decision to appoint ex-Mississippi Gov. Bryant to his "Patriotic Education" fund comes after a tenure in which Gov. Bryant yearly declared April "Confederate Heritage Month." 2/

Since 2016, Gov. Bryant has aligned himself with pro-Brexit British nationalists on a mission to "Make Great Britain Great Again."

I covered that in my award winning investigation for @JxnFreePress: "God Save the Governor: Phil Bryant, Brexit Soldier." 3/ jacksonfreepress.com/news/2019/nov/…

1. This election is so much bigger than re-electing the president. One man alone cannot undo the problems. The education dept is the root of many of the problems. Change the curriculum, change the people. It’s how we got to this point today. #1776Commission is a good start, but..
2. ..it’s not enough. To change the hearts & minds of the people, start with the information they are taught. Brainwashing & indoctrination have effectively turned a generation and a half against the very essence of whom we are as Americans. Students don’t know history or civics.
3. They have been taught to hate America and all who love the freedoms we cherish. They’ve adopted a collectivist mentality, the antithesis of our founding documents. They deny the individual, in lieu of some social justice Marxist poppycock, as the ‘solution’ to our problems.

1/ What movies will President Trump’s #1776Commission recommend as part of his “Patriotic Education” program, and for which period? @HerbertHistory? American Revolution (a gimme):
2/ Civil War? Come on.
3/ Reconstruction? Hello?

One of the reasons so many people say, “I never knew” or “They never taught me this in school” is the ethos behind #1776Commission. Tell a whitewashed version of history about American exceptionalism and label any facts that reveal the nation’s flaws as unpatriotic.
I’m glad there are plenty of brave people who are ready to face the truth of our nation’s past and have already picked this up.

Just got through watching the White House Conference on American History. If you think they're not pushing an agenda, I'll begin with this clip from Ben Carson, then I'll just point out a few quick observation that I think are worth noting. #1776Commission
Note: this comes right after a bizarre statement in which Dr. Carson seems to question freedom of the press. (I'm not sure) And then lays out some ridiculous history (Madison is behind both the 1st amendment & the National Gazette which was founded to attack the Washington admin)
What follows are 9 people. A few are legit scholars. Most aren't. All are white. Peter Wood has a PhD in anthropology- before he was issuing warnings about anarchy, he was denying climate change. Mary Grabar has an English PhD & hates Zinn so much she wrote a book about it.
