One thing you learn

when as a WOC/POC, a Muslim woman/man, LGBTQ, disabled person, neurodiverse person or any other non-standard person

is when you
-show authenticity
-express oneself
-lead
-seek standards & ethics

you can & will be labeled as “toxic” by toxic Amy Cooper types
What we can learn from the #insurrection #CapitolRiots of “this is our house” is that open, public spaces are what white supremacists consider theirs.

An Obama supporter like #AmyCooper in #NYC CAN still perpetuate a culture of #whitesupremacy

bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
Also, be aware of the phrase I learned of late: “not all skin folk are kin folk” - not everyone is “fam” even if they have appropriated the phrase.

The “model minority” is often seeking to advance self by validating status quo, aligned with power.

1/12 An open letter to The Christian Left, a “progressive online ministry” that is inflicting organized white violence against Lace Watkins, a long-time follower of @TheChristianLft and renowned Black Christian #activist bit.ly/316sAq8 #shareblackstories
2/12 Her transgression? Being a Black Christian woman who dared to question the white male co-founders of The Christian Left for profiteering off the death of Congressman #JohnLewis by appropriating his legacy of #goodtrouble.
3/12 The Christian Left refuses to #listentoblackwomen. They ban Lace and erase all of her comments. They silence anyone who kindly invites them to consider how their behavior is at odds with their stated values, which they call "concern trolling" rather than #goodtrouble.

A few more thoughts on this article which shall not be named:

1. It's not listed as a perspective or opinion piece.
2. It's in a reputable journal.
3. It's open access.
4. It worsens the imposter syndrome.
5. The author uses what seems like air quotes. A lot.
2/

6. This paints us "blacks" as hopeless causes.
7. This perpetuates the idea that we don't belong.
8. I was the student who'd be bumped off of the author's musical chairs.
9. Someone else saw this first which means there are others who (may) agree.

This is so, so hurtful.

I realize that I feel the same way I did when #AmyCooper called the cops in Central Park: Unsafe.

These are the moments where you worry that the smiling mask slipped and you saw what you now can't unsee.

Even if you say sorry.

I'm hurting today.

I feel like I cant call myself a prison abolitionist.
The way I feel?
#AmyCooper was fine calling the police on a Black man, knowing what they might do.
If jail was good enough for him then, its good enough for her now.
I will NOT have prison abolition conversations that center white people or police officers. I'm not there yet. I don't know if I ever will be.
Because they are fine with jails as long as they think Black people are the only ones in them.
"You a prison abolitionist but you wanna arrest the cops who killed Breonna Taylor?"
What I REALLY want? Is Breonna Taylor still alive.
So no. Im not a prison abolitionist. Im a person who wants Black people to live.
Thats where I am right now.

The #disparitiesreport came out today. I will do a thread on Weds underneath here.
Its content is important. Those of you who have followed me recently, I suspect due to my #antiracismchallenge, I encourage you to engage with reading and absorbing this report 1️⃣ Image
It'll give u a better understanding of y the juxtaposition of: #lockdown; #GeorgeFloyd's murder; #AmyCooper's disregard for #ChristianCooper's life; the Met's decision to NFA in the case of #BellyMujinga; the tasering of #DesmondZiggyMombeyarara; and many other factors 2️⃣
have left so many Black folk in a state of paralysis. Taking time to read material like this is part of being an ally: gives insight into the lived reality of others; helps you 2b informed enough 2 hold the gov & powers that be accountable. #ShowUp #MakeItYourProblemToo 3️⃣

I am an extremely privileged Black American.

My family has been privileged for generations, first through education and later through powerful jobs and their accompanying lifestyle.

This privilege does not bring safety for me or my family. 1/
Education, position, money, language, clothes; nothing buys safety.

And we should not require these things to achieve safety in the land of the free.
2/
#ChristianCooper is the epitome of the privileged Black man; a bird watching Harvard graduate. Maybe this helped him stay outwardly calm while a White woman tried to bring the power of the police to bear against him.

The world is on fire but I’ve been sick and need to address #AmyCooper. Many have focused on the interpersonal interaction but few have looked at it from a systemic level. Not many white folx have acknowledged that Amy Cooper acted exactly like whiteness wanted her to. Thread 👇
I’ve seen many chastise Amy Cooper, a singular white person, for her actions and her words, isolating her as a bad person and racist. But by pointing a finger solely at her, we miss how she has been intentionally shaped by whiteness (like the rest of us) to uphold the system. 2/
I’ve seen a lot of fingers pointed at her, but few fingers pointing directly back at the rest of us white people. Because unless we are actively fighting back against racism at the personal, interpersonal, institutional, and systemic levels, we are all Amy Coopers. 3/

Cause of death: racism. #GeorgeFloyd (1/)
Tonight I can’t get the voice of one of my patients, a black homeless man, out of my head: “they treat us like stray dogs.” (2/)
On the surface, he was talking about the police clearing people from the subways each night in NYC. But there’s a lot in that “us” and a lot in that “they.” (3/)

It's hard to find words about #GeorgeFloyd, but I'm going to try; for my own sake as much as for anyone who may care to listen. The overwhelming feeling I have is exhaustion, with a cold emptiness as its close companion. *Thread*
My favorite author, James Baldwin, in my favorite book, "The Fire Next Time," put it this way. "You were born where you were born and faced the future that you faced because you were black and for no other reason. The limits of your ambition were, thus...
expected to be set forever. You were born into a society which spelled out with brutal clarity, and in as many ways as possible, that you were a worthless human being... I know your countrymen do not agree with me about this, and I hear them saying "You exaggerate." ...

I don't have words today for everything happening.
So I'm going to share some lines from my new book #NativeBook that will name some of what is happening.
#GeorgeFloyd #AmyCooper

America cannot know itself if it doesn't recognize itself.
So, here we go:
"Genocide of Indigenous peoples, the slave trade, masters proclaiming salvific dominion over other human beings through the power of whiteness--these are elements that have led us to a white supremacist/individualistic faith, and we are separated from truly practicing community."
"As Christians in America, we so often want a quick and easy fix, an answer that we can put in our back pocket to pull out when things get tough.
But that's not how it works, especially when it comes to groups the church has oppressed."

Something that bummed me out this morning: I see #AmyCooper's name across my timeline and trending (for good reason) but had to search and click into several articles before seeing #GeorgeFloyd's name and not just "a black man killed by police".
Even with his name, there are so many names that even when we #SayHisName it feels drowned out. I can't even begin to understand how that fatigue/trauma feels to a black person. I have a lot more in common with Amy Cooper yet feel discouraged as to what I can do in all of this.
I know many of my (white) peers outside Twitter won't know this happened or worse have the apathy and (un)conscious bias that create Amy Cooper's in the first place. I want to know #GeorgeFloyd's name but moreso I want to know how to change myself and my fellow Amy's and Karen's

Welp. We have the "I am not a racist and my entire life has been destroyed by how badly people have reacted to this silly tiff" phase behind us already. The morning shows apology tour must be next. #AmyCooper Image
The Amy Coopers of the world call the police knowing - hoping, even - that this could be the outcome.

The juxtaposition of this sanitized, vectorless language with the voices of bystanders panicking while watching a man die before their eyes is too much. All for a "forgery in progress." ImageImage

Women like #AmyCooper weaponized their 'whiteness' for centuries to Maim/Kill/Deny black people life & liberty.

Her action isn't 'abhorrent' its EVIL. Listen to her fake shriek & fear. This got African Americans lynched & its why she called the cops.

She's a Karen.

RACIST.
.@FTI_US the ONLY action you must take swiftly & unequivocally is to FIRE #AmyCooper. Period.

She tried to get #christiancooper killed by the cops. She deliberately lied as you can see from the video to accuse him of a crime he didn't commit.
Many #AmyCooper are Heads/Managers/Supervisors etc at top organisations today weaponizing their whiteness in subtle & overt ways to harass, marginalise & fire black staff

When Black people complain - the cloak of #whiteprivilege cover these #racist #Karen to make us the problem.

As everyone points out that #AmyCooper is a progressive Democrat, the one thing that sticks out to me is how we often police our own. On the other hand, when members of the right are racist, the entire right defends them, and then elects them to Congress or to the White House.
Also, wtf was she doing to that poor dog? I never do this, but to borrow from the right, “lock her up!”
Just to clarify, it’s a very good thing that we police our own. We should. If only there were reciprocity from the right, we wouldn’t have men like Steve King in Congress and Trump in the White House.

when #amycooper emerges she's gonna cry about "abuse" and "death threats" (when she was perfectly happy to play central park executioner); RW media will cast her as a victim/hero and muddy the story; the birder will have every aspect of his life examined by msm
someone will write an op ed about "twitter mob justice"; #amycooper will cash in on her newfound comradeship on the right; and in its cantilevered attempts at "balance" we'll wind up with an nyt "no angel" feature on cooper's victim.
the only reason she might have her rep permanently bruised is she hurt a dog and white people care about dogs.

Black man out bird watching: Please follow park rules and leash your dog.

White women: “I’m taking pictures and calling the cops. ...I’m going to tell them there is an African-American man threatening my life.”

This is terrorism.
She knows she is being recorded and doesn’t care.

She knows saying those words puts the man’s life in danger.

She knows the cops will believe her over the Black man recording.

...and that dog is acting like it has never seen a leash before.
Someone who used to walk her dog ID’ed her on Twitter as Amy Cooper and her dog’s name is Henry.

The dog has his own Instagram, oh_henry_spaniel, which she reportedly has deleted posts and has now made private.
