I’ve decided to cancel this interview. A mini 🧵— I hope you’ll hear me out…
“Thanks” to the unacceptable silence/response from key figures involved with #BEEFNetflix re: David Choe, I’ve let go of a once-in-a-blue-moon moment for **Viet-Am** representation in media. We’re still not getting the exposure or respect we deserve, so every bit feels crucial.
I truly don’t know if there’ll be another moment like this, considering the workings of the industry & its attitudes re: my community. But as much as this is a loss, events transpired have made everything a moment to learn & reflect—not or no longer a celebration.

How #BEEFnetflix demonstrates the entanglement of purity culture, race, and masculinity, and why religion is a helpful analytic (or, what keeps tripping me up besides feeling disillusioned about it all): 1/ Image
In light of all that’s resurfaced about David Ch*e it’s impossible to think or talk about this show now apart from the violence and trauma of sexual assault. @reappropriate talked about his disgusting behavior here back in 2014. reappropriate.co/2014/04/did-ko… 2/
Others are talking about the irresponsibility of his recent casting, the despicable backtracking and scrubbing, the absent response from producers, actors, directors, and more: @kimmythepooh

Over the past week, jumped with joy several times at the ways in which #BEEFNetflix beautifully understood and portrayed the nuances of underlying rage, Korean men rage, shame, assimilation, Korean church culture, talking to your inner child, self-acceptance..1/
..class divides, socio-economic divides, Orientalism, kindred spirits, trauma bonding, family codependency, honor/shame culture, religiosity, and mental health. Many of us were planning IG Lives, streaming, podcasts, talks and furiously group texting each other. 2/
Then, the conversation shifted. Instead of focusing on all the amazing richness in each of the ten 30-minute episodes, it was overshadowed, then overpowered by the recirculation of David Choe’s 2014 podcast episode where he casually bragged about sexually assaulting a masseuse 3/

COLUMN: As a TV and film critic, I think a lot about who gets opportunities in Hollywood and who doesn’t.

I’m baffled that David Choe was given a role on #BeefNetflix considering his history: Made up rape story or not, his remarks have long been public

Sometimes a person has too much baggage to ignore. That’s what’s happening with #BEEFNetflix

So far, the show's creator and stars as well as Netflix & A24 have been silent about audience concerns pertaining to Choe's involvement with the show chicagotribune.com/entertainment/…
The voting period for Emmy nominations is not far off. I’m curious if #BEEFNetflix intends to campaign — it seems likely it will — and if all involved will continue their silence on Choe Image

Hey folks, there's a convo about Beef that I hope you're keeping up with. We can't ignore this just for Asian American representation sake. This is not the type of representation I want and you shouldn't either. There is nothing funny about rape jokes.
Here's the video that was pulled off of twitter by Choe's own company #BEEFNetflix :
Choe laughs stating that he was a successful rapist. He uses MRAsian language about the general under sexualization of Asian men and basically says what every person who educates abt rape warns: rape is not about sex, but about power. He got a power trip from it.

#BEEFNetflix star David Choe slammed after podcast detailing “rapey behavior” resurfaces: Social media users are questioning Choe's casting in the Netflix show, pointing to a 2014 podcast in which he said he was “a successful rapist”

I keep thinking about this. It happened yesterday. A lot of outlets do live panel events, this one looks to be pegged to the Emmy nomination run-up as a way for shows to boost their profile among voters.

Were any of #BEEFNetflix's three participants asked about David Choe? Image
btw interesting to note that none of the big 3 Hollywood trades (all owned by the same co) have written about the Choe and the story he tells on that 2014 podcast that's resurfaced.

That's *unusual* — this is absolutely a show biz story but not even one aggregated write-up

On a diff note, there's a reason why Steven Yeun grew up evangelical, John Cho's dad was a pastor, & I was in a worship band w/Lee Isaac Chung in college. It's v hard to understand Korean imm & Korean Americans w/o (Protestant) Christianity. Some context for #BEEFNetflix viewers:
More than 40% of Asian Americans (AA) identify as Christian & a significant % of these as evangelical or born-again Prot. For Koreans, it's >60% Christian. Koreans also make up >1/3 of all AA evangelicals (Jerry Z Park, 2021 & @pewresearch). They're a big part of my current book. ImageImage
Even if you’re not religious, it’s hard to escape the reach of Korean churches as community centers. Sociologist Pyong Gap Min explores this. And there's literally whole books about Korean (& Asian) American college students in evangelical campus fellowships like InterVarsity. ImageImage
