Lest we forget..
35 years ago, the epic disaster took place on the night of 2-3 Dec, 1984, in the Union Carbide plant. Over 25000 people died and thousands left deformed. Kids are still being born with twisted limbs and other physical and mental deformities.
Warren Anderson, the then Chairman of Union Carbide, landed in India on 7th December to take stock of the situation. He was arrested at the airport but within hours of his arrest, he was granted bail on a personal bond of Rs25000 and he left India never to return.
Arjun Singh in his autobiography has written that he had received a call to release Anderson. This has been attributed to a quid pro quo by Rajiv Gandhi to secure freedom of his childhood friend's son Adil Shahryar, who was in a US jail.
