Some thoughts today about coaching football, and business, and hiring, since we unfortunately keep having to go about this as #BroncosCountry fans. Thesis - Everything that most of us think is important is unimportant, and the important stuff is non-obvious.
The football media messes us up, because a lot of what they have to say is motivated talking points that somebody (often agents) gave them. The rest is often nonsense that reflects a lack of understanding of how the world works beyond their immediate daily environment.
I work as a CFO for a privately held middle market company, and through my career, I've worked closely with both good and bad CEOs. That leaves you with impressions. A Head Football Coach is essentially a CEO, and to be succesful, the person in the job needs a CEO skill set.

#Broncos fans are concerned about the number of injuries this season, and people are getting out their pitchforks to go scapegoat hunting. A popular choice seems to be Strength & Conditioning coach Loren Landow, with the ridiculous #FireLandow hashtag floating around. (cont'd)
Strength and Conditioning (S&C) coaches are responsible for the team's physical training, so a high injury rate would mean they are bad at their jobs, right?

NO. This is an incorrect assumption and I'll explain why.

An educational 🧵
For starters, let's get the obvious out of the way: football is an incredibly violent sport that places impossible demands on players' bodies. NFL players are amazingly strong, but human tissue (muscle, bone, ligaments) can only withstand a certain level of physical force

To get ready for Week 5.

Dalvin Cook didn’t seem limited by his shoulder.

22 touches for 86 yards, but Alexander Mattison got the TD on just four touches.

Woof.
Justin Jefferson is FINE. More than fine actually.

The Vikings WR earned 13 targets to the tune of 10 catches for 147 yards.

Added a rushing TD.

37% target share.

Ironing out kinks in the viz but here are #Chiefs vs #Cardinals receiving stats to tide you over.

Juju looks promsing, MVS isn't a thing but playing over Hardman in 2 WR sets, don't worry about Skyy.

Hollywood will be fine, Ertz part time coming off injury, idk about Dortch.
#Steelers @ @Bengals

Diontae will be fine, really strong Pat F showing, meh from Claypool and Pickens.

Chase is a star, prob don't care about Boyd even with Tee sidelined, even pre-Higgins injury it was firmly the Chase show.
Air yards data looking a bit suspect for a few teams, going to pause for now

A couple of years ago I published a weekly matchups thread with charts for each game, and this year I'm bringing it back! While I'll normally share on Thursdays, I'm so excited for Week 1 to start that I'm sharing this week's today!

Let's have a great season, everyone! 🏈
Before I start, here's a description of the 3 charts:
1. Comparing OFF vs. DEF key stat rankings
2. Player distribution of 2021/22 DK points
3. Player % of team rushing/receiving expected fpts

In addition to these charts, I'll also include one stat nugget relevant to that game!
#Bills @ #Rams (+2.5)
Game total: 52
BUF implied team total: 27.25
LA implied team total: 24.75
Key stat: Buffalo's defensive pass EPA/play went from -0.112 (2nd) with Tre'Davious White (weeks 1-12) to 0.035 (15th) without him (weeks 13-20). He's out Thursday night.

Over the next week I will be recapping my overall thoughts on what every team did in the 2022 #NFLDraft.

Today I will start with the NFC West and cover the @AZCardinals, @RamsNFL, @49ers and @Seahawks
the @AZCardinals recap

2 (55) TE Trey McBride
3 (87) EDGE Cam Thomas
3 (100) Edge Myjai Sanders
6 (201) RB Keaontay Ingram
6 (215) OG Lecitus Smith
7 (244) CB Christian Matthew
7 (256) LB Jesse Luketa
7 (257) OG Marquis Hayes

fav pick: Thomas
value pick: Luketa
? pick: McBride
draft haul has to include trading for M Brown giving them explosive speed WR they need with loss of Kirk & suspension of Nuk. I think they had more pressing needs than TE after giving Ertz a new 3 yr deal. Think Thomas can become starter & Luketa could have went early 4th

Texts from Bill Belichick to Brian Flores, congratulating Brian for landing the #Giants job.

Belichick thought he was texting Brian Daboll. He was texting Flores by mistake.

Not all teams are trying to win, we knew that, now here's proof.

#Dolphins owner Stephen Ross was upset with Brian Flores for being too successful. Resented him for it.

Probably has something to do with him firing a coach that has been wining the past two seasons in Miami.
Story keeps getting wilder and wilder.

A few notes on #broncos hiring Nathaniel Hackett:
- Hackett presented the best plan for all 3 phases
- His innovative approach toward coaching scratched the itch for the competitive edge Paton was looking for
- Commands a room. Be it players or coaches. Much needed trait
cont:
- He spent time during visit all over the building. Maybe spent the least amount of time Monday with Paton.
- Spoke with Joe Ellis discussing ownership and it’s future
- Those involved loved how he walked the building pointing out things he’d change or improve during visit
- Paton genuinely listened to the input from everyone involved in the search
- Paton didn't drag is feet. Felt no need to rush, even though everyone agreed on Hackett, as long as other teams weren't making a hire yet. Just kept evaluating until he felt he needed to make the call

The NFL and NFL Players Association are in active discussions about postponing multiple Week 15 games in light of recent COVID cases, per sources.

Similar circumstances to delays in 2020, with new cases still emerging with #Browns, #Rams, #WFT.
The NFL has made clear the past two seasons it won’t postpone games for competitive reasons (e.g. the #Broncos playing with no QBs, etc.). But it did reschedule several games last season in cases where there was evidence of ongoing COVID spread. This would be a medical decision.
A notable dynamic: Sources say the NFLPA has received feedback that a majority of players want to eliminate COVID protocols altogether. No more testing, quarantining, etc. That sentiment isn’t shared by union leadership, which has continued to advocate for daily testing.

** Post Week 10 // Pre-Week 11 Thought Dump **

Coming off another wild week of upsets.

Among NFL best records:

8-2 #Titans have lost to 2-7 #Jets
7-2 #Cowboys to 5-5 #Broncos
7-3 #Rams to 4-5 #49ers
6-3 #Bills to 2-7 #Jaguars
6-3 #Bucs to 3-6 #WFT
6-3 #Ravens to 3-7 #Dolphins
Random Takes & Notes:

- Standing by Rhamondre Stevenson as #Patriots best RB with Wk 10 as confirmation bias
- Rashod Bateman hasn’t hurt Marquise Brown whatsoever; The Real Hollywood Avging 13 targets since Bateman’s return
- Jeff Wilson SZN if Eli Mitchell (finger) sits v Jags
- Josh Allen used play action on 57% of Week 10 drops — nearly 2x the highest rate of any team all last year. He destroyed, of course
- #Bills backfield has devolved into 3-way RBBC. Avoid
- Long as #Bears keep letting Justin Fields run, he’ll produce. Back2Back top-10 FF starts

🚑WEEK 3 INJURY THREAD🚑

Full write up out Tuesday am with @TheFFBallers

My concise thoughts here 👇
#Patriots RB James White

R Hip injury similar to that of Ryan Fitzpatrick (hip subluxation). Will have imaging tomorrow to determine severity but I'm expecting White to land on IR
#Giants WRs Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton

Both players exited early with hamstring strains, with Shepard being ruled out immediately. Would plan for both to miss Week 4 with good possibility both players miss more than one week. Expect both to have an MRI tomorrow

Let's talk about something important today, if you're a #BroncosCountry fan. That is, how to use the team's draft resources to create the best team possible for 2021 and beyond. I decided it would be fun to think about strategy, and to share some of that with you. 1/56
The best place to start is with an honest assessment of where the team is. The #Broncos went 5-11 in 2020, but there are some reasons for optimism, when you look at what caused the bad record. 2/56
The first thing I'd point to is that Drew Lock had some pretty obvious growing pains, like most young QBs do. He also wasn't helped by several young receivers having similar growing pains. QB and WR are very hard to play well as young players. 3/56

People forget the #Patriots were 1 yard away from beating the #Seahawks, a fumble away from beating the #Bills and lost their starting QB to COVID against the #Chiefs and still almost won with the terrible tandem of Hoyer and Stidham...
Newton had a two game skid after COVID (which clearly has an effect on players) where they got smoked by the #49ers and came down to the wire with the #Broncos
Point is, the #Patriots were a couple of unfortunate events from winning all of those games, and I know football isn’t black and white but 3/5 of those games could’ve/should’ve been wins. That team last year almost won 10 games.

Some #Broncos thoughts on a Sunday after they played the day before - there's been a lot of hot takery lately about Lock, Fangio, Elway, Shurmur, everybody needing to go. You probably won't be surprised to learn that I think this is highly misguided. 1/44
When you clean house every 2-3 years, like the #Broncos have been doing, over the course of 20 years, you become the #Browns. You have to have patience, and let things develop, because nothing is fast. 2/44
In most cases, you shouldn't consider firing a coach until s/he's had 3 years to establish a program. The only exception is when it's just clear that the person isn't up to the job. That determination can't be made from outside the building, especially by a fan. 3/44

Nobody asked for it, but here is my very dull take on the proposed groundshare with London Broncos. If nothing else it has highlighted the continuing problem with the existing Dons Trust constitution.

1

#afcwimbedon #afcw #wimbledon #broncos
I am no expert on these issues so I apologise for any incorrect assumptions below. Those more involved with the DT may have a more insightful (and accurate) view.

2
Is the DTB obliged to take a members vote to decide on a groundshare?

The DT constitution does not mention Plough Lane anywhere with regards to restricted actions. It is outdated and still only refers to Kingsmeadow.
