Some thoughts for anyone like me who has left their Cork Busconnects submission to the last minute.. There are plans to demolish the existing footbridge over the South Link and replace with a slightly wider shared path. I think a better approach

would be to build a second, parallel bridge for a few reasons.
1. The construction process could take years during which time we'd be without a bridge at all.
2. Shared paths are nearly always suboptimal, they put pedestrians and cyclists in conflict.
3. It's more sustainable to
build a second smaller bridge than replace a perfectly good existing bridge.
4. The connection to Rockboro Rd. would be several higher metres higher than the existing connection to Gasworks Rd, meaning a much steeper slope to access the bridge from Hibernian and Marina Tce. dirs.

Route numbers were only introduced in 1918. In the horse tram era, each route had different colour cars and the destination painted on its sides, like this #Rathmines tram on #Westmoreland Street in 1892 (catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000…) /2
Apparently interchangeable destination boards were introduced in c. 1897, then in 1903 roller blind destination scrolls came into use (corner of Grafton/Nassau St, catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000…) /3

[Thread] The NTA have published new drawings for the #BusConnects Core Bus Corridors. This project aims to deliver 200km of cycle track and 230km of bus lanes in Dublin.

Let's have a deeper look at corridors 6-12 on the south west side of the city.
Let's start with #BusConnects Core Bus Corridor (CBC) 6 from Lucan to Heuston Station. This route follows the N4/Chapelizod Bypass to the Liffey.

There are some big improvements for cycling along this route.

The biggest change from a cycling point of view is that the National Transport Authority (NTA) are proposing a two-way cycle track along the north side of the N4 by Hermitage Golf Course.

This was a @dublincycling request to keep people away from heavy traffic.

The latest #BusConnects Core Bus Corridor plans have been released today by the NTA. From first glance at the northside routes (CBC1-5) there are good improvements for cycling. Though there are still tons of issues to work through.

A quick overview of the northside CBCs
CBC1 runs from Clongriffin to Marino via the Malahide Road. The junctions were the main issue with this route for people cycling. They are much improved in places (though some issues remain). The majority of bus stops do not cut into the cycle track

The NTA are keeping the quiet cycling diversion through Marino residential streets. The Malahide Road from Griffith Avenue to Marino Mart is too narrow to add dedicated cycle tracks. Haverty Road will be traffic filtered to remove rat running cars.

[Thread] This is factually incorrect research. 4,700 trees will not be felled. I have spent over 7 months researching the @BusConnects Core Bus Corridors and I've written 10,000s of words for @dublincycling. This research suffers from a clear fatal flaw in the methodology
The methodology is completely flawed. They drew a 20m wide corridor along each route on satellite photos and attempted to count the number of affected trees. This is completely ignores the actual published maps from #BusConnects.
At first this methodology seems reasonable. The optimum cross-section for the Core Bus Corridors is just a car lane, bus lane, cycle track and footpath in each direction (image 1). However, sometimes there is a median or grass verges (image 2).

.@DermotLeary argument here emphasizes all the downsides of the plan and conceals of the benefits. It's exactly like telling people that a job is terrible because you have to work, while never mentioning that you also get paid. (2/)
So again, the point of @busconnects is to massively expand people's ability to go more places, so they can do more things, so they have more opportunities in their lives. That's what @DermotLeary, @NBRU_DUBLIN, @pb4p, and many councillors/TDs are attacking. (3/)
