🚨 THREAD: As #Britain continues to mourn the loss of #QueenElizabeth II, the remaining provisions of the #CoronavirusAct are due to expire in #Scotland on 30th Sept & #England #Wales around the same time.

But some 'permanent provisions' may not expire as expected... (contd.) The Coronavirus Act (2020)
While three of the provisions & a part of the fourth (s.55b) were repealed, there's mention of provisions remaining 'necessary' to support 'pandemic recovery' & the Govt Living with COVID plan.
The 'permanent provision' of s.63 - 'power to make supplementary provisions' & it's permanent fixture by virtue of s.89 of the Act, raised our eyebrows 👀

'Retroactively' to our interpretation is the Govt saying that they don't want to let go of this particular power.

🤡🌎 House of Commons Deputy Speaker @eleanor4epping decides a vote to extend UK #CoronavirusAct 6mnths is NOT necessary saying "It’s not the mood of the House to vote on the issue." It passes with a laugh & ridicule

@UKParliament is a shitshow & not fit for purpose. Democracy?
This video above shows the sorry state of UK democracy. They think it's a joke

@munirawilson @DawnButlerBrent @DavidDavisMP gave it the best opposition. The system's broken
An extension of ability of this Government to streamroad legislation that takes away people's basic freedoms, without going through Parliament, did not even warrant a vote. It was instead decided by the loudness of puerile MPs. It's a shambolic farcical excuse for democracy.

📋Today MPs will consider the renewal of the #CoronavirusAct

🗽The Coronavirus Act has contained egregious powers but it's the Public Health Act that has been used to lock us down, shut businesses & stop family reunions

⬇️My position on today's motion

stevebaker.info/2021/10/todays…
🚷Covid restrictions have been mostly implemented under the Public Health Act 1984 - what happens today does not affect it

🔒The risk of immediate lockdown by ministerial fiat without scrutiny remains until we have a new Public Health Act ⤵️

“When we rammed this act of Parliament through, I stood and said it would bring forward a dystopian society. I had no idea then just how dystopian it would be.” 👇👇👇

🚨 A major milestone today as #lockdown eases for most of the UK.

But can we really call this #FreedomDay?

#EmergencyPowers are still being used to clamp down on protesters, with 4 arrested on suspicion of breaching Health Protection Regulations this weekend.

And the #CoronavirusAct remains in force, although all 270 charges under the Act have been unlawful.

Today, NHS App users can create a "2D barcode" to show their Covid vaccine status using their NHS number, name and COVID vaccination history.

While right now this will only be used for some international travel, later this month an announcement is due on domestic Covid passes.

Tomorrow’s vote on the #CoronavirusAct is an opportunity to say NO to a new way of life under extreme police powers.

❌ The Coronavirus Act is extreme, unnecessary and disproportionate

🚷 We must not allow for a checkpoint society to become normal.
PM: “anything that is redundant will go” from #CoronavirusAct.

🚨 Sch 21- allows indefinite detainment of “potentially infectious” incl. children; 100% unlawful prosecution rate.

🚨 Sch 22- never been used; allows for even less scrutiny in gathering & business restrictions.
📋 I have tabled an amendment to tomorrow’s #CoronavirusAct renewal vote to remove Sch 21 & Sch 22.

📩 Ask your MP to support my amendment.

Voting down the #CoronavirusAct would give the Government 21 days to propose a new framework that MPs can actually scrutinise & amend.

The current legislation gives the Government sweeping powers, without placing obligations on them to support the public.

Let's fix this. 1/8
Under Sec 98(1) if the #CoronavirusAct is voted down this leaves 21 days until its provisions expire.

After 6 months, we know what’s working and what isn’t.

21 days is enough time to put down new provisions with proper scrutiny. 2/8 Image
Under the current Act, the Government has given itself extraordinary powers without accountability & set no provisions for those in need.

New economic packages are announced like gifts, when at a time like this support packages & relief measures should be the law. 3/8

BREAKING | #StopAndSearch

We've uncovered new figures showing the Met Police dramatically increased use of the most discriminatory form of stop and search during lockdown.
theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/j…
Section 60 orders allow police to stop and search people without any suspicion - a recipe for discrimination.

It's only supposed to be used if there has been violence or when serious violence may occur in a specific area.

Met police issued 65 in May - up from 13 in April.
Black people are almost 10 times more likely to be stopped under regular (so-called section 1) stop and search powers than white people.
