@BarCouncilChair I wish Mark all the best at the start of his tenure. He will need fortitude & resolution. Tact & diplomacy has accomplished very little in the past. The objective is to save the #CriminalBar. That can’t be done unless we remain unified with #CriminalSolicitors
We must never cut any deal at their expense, & we must stand shoulder to shoulder with them. Any Chair of The Bar or #CBA will be judged harshly if they do not screw their courage to the sticking place. Yes, the ironic source of that quotation is known to me.
If Government refuses to engage in negotiations aimed at averting the collapse of the #CriminalJusticeSystem, & restoring the crumbling Court Estate, the Bar must take unified action.

I did my dissertation on #ConcentrationCamps, so I have a few thoughts about @AOC's use of the term to describe the build up of camps on the US southern border. For those in a hurry, here's the take-home message: By any reasonable definition, these are concentration camps
Why are they called concentration camps? well, to state the obvious, it's because large numbers of people are "concentrated" in camps. A better question is, why don't we just call them prisons? We don't say "prisons" because prisons are a part of the formal legal system.
Follow me on this: The immigrants detained in concentration camps are intended to be OUTSIDE the formal legal system. Once removed from the #CriminalJusticeSystem the state is largely free to do whatever it wants. As Hannah Arendt might say, "everything is possible."

Dear #Criminology,
We need to have a serious conversation about #LivedExperience in #Criminology. There's a trend for suggesting that this, in and of itself, confers special insights or even 'expertise' over/above theoretically informed learning. This is not necessarily true. 1/?
First, we need to unpick the assumption underpinning the notion #LivedExperience confers special insight. This is predicated on the idea that experiencing a phenomenon necessarily enables an individual to understand the phenomenon that they experienced. This is false. 2/?
Experience enables people to understand subjectively experiencing the phenomenon but not necessarily the phenomenon itself. Think about cancer. Experiencing cancer doesn't necessarily mean that you will have any sophisticated understanding of malignant cellular metastasis but 3/?

1/ @TheTakeaway @tanzinavega really disappointed you had this guest on a show peddling controversial theories that weaponize the failures of the #criminaljusticesystem #racism and #massincarceration against survivors of #domesticviolence and #coercivecontrol.
2/#VAWAs failures lie not only in its non-holistic, non-systemic approach to addressing #DV—not as #coercivecontrol and not in coordination with child safety risks, as it should be—but also in its methodology, assumptions, implementation etc. @thetakeaway @tanzinavega
3/Just because #VAWA is flawed doesn’t mean you throw the baby out with the bath water. Her theories are dangerous to #survivors and hide its misogynist underpinnings as they center #abuser needs over #survivor and #child #safety, #stability #strength. @TheTakeaway @tanzinavega
