🧵| Shug Jordan in #DDay

When 156,000 Allied soldiers stormed the beaches of Normandy, Ralph Shug Jordan was one of them.

In fact, Shug was one of the few people to know the secret details of the landings prior to June 6, 1944. (1/8) Image
Jordan helped plan many amphibious landings during World War II. He was mainly in charge of the logistics portion as a member of the U.S. Army's First Engineer Special Brigade.

The D-Day dress rehearsal code name was "Exercise Tiger." No Auburn influence on the name, sadly (2/8) Image
"There were no atheists on those boats," Shug said of the moments just before storming Utah Beach.

Tucked inside his boot was a clipping of the 1/1/1944 Auburn Plainsman. It featured one of the first printings of the Auburn Creed, written by Shug's mentor George Petrie. (3/8) Image

On June 6, 1944, Allied Forces invaded Normandy in an effort to liberate Western Europe from Nazi Germany's occupation. The operation involved 156,000 American, British and Canadian troops who were transported by over 5,000 ships and landing craft to five different beaches. Image
D-Day marked the beginning of the end of World War II in Europe. The successful landings provided a foothold for the Allied forces to begin pushing into France and eventually Germany, ultimately leading to Germany's surrender and the end of the war.
The Normandy landings remain significant as they represented a heroic and costly battle that many soldiers fought and lost their lives in.

Why are there so many #WWI memorials in #KansasCity ? Outside of our own @TheWWImuseum, there are dozens, small and large covering KS and MO. A lot of it has to do with the 5-day experience of the 35th Division in Sept 1918. Let's look at it through KC newspapers of the time. 🧵
Over the course of that time, the 35th would suffer more casualties than all units on Omaha Beach on #Dday combined. As a National Guard formation, it came under criticism for its performance from regular officers. Politicians in MO and KS eventually became involved.
On both sides of the state line, questions arose. Particularly from Kansas governor Henry Justin Allen, who pressured the War Department for answers.

99.01/ Week ninety-nine, June 6-10, 2022, thread begins here.

Week 98 below.
99.02/ A good example of living in two worlds, religious and secular, is the coincidence of two sacred days: the 2nd day of #Shavuot on #DDay. Last night, after Yom Tov, only after reading the news a bit did my mind shift from "sacred to my religion" to "sacred to my citizenship"
99.03/ Pedantry Corner: it irks me to read divrei Torah about #Shavuot that enshrine incredibly recent customs as facts to derive universal truths. "This is the reason why Jews stay up all night..." or "why we eat dairy" - nope. Please don't make fads into load-bearing verities.

The Canadians played an invaluable role on #DDay which is, in a very Canadian way, modestly never mentioned - but the Canadians survived Dieppe & without the lessons learned there, likely D-Day has terrible casualties and/or fails.

"If your pictures aren’t good enough, you’re not close enough."
One of the greatest of movie set photographs, by Robert Capa: Ingrid Bergman & Alfred Hitchcock on the set of Notorious, 1946. It's been suggested that Capa's love affair with Bergman was the genesis of a Hitchcock film made 8 years later: Rear Window.
Ingrid Bergman was in the middle of a torrid love affair with the great photographer Robert Capa when he took these photographs on the Notorious set, 1946. What a look she gives him!

The declaration of #DDay and defensive war means a series of implications:
1) TMD's scrutiny of underground youth resistance groups is expected to increase. Already, we are seeing TMD taking bases in supermarkets etc.

#WhatsHappeningInMyanmar
#Sep7Coup
It's worrying that we might see indiscriminate roundups of youths in urban areas.
2) Looking at TMD's movement in navy and fighter jets etc, it seems that TMD is alrdy preparing for an intense crackdown. On the other hand, we aren't sure of how prepared the @NUGMyanmar is.
3) The military might and could take many preemptive actions: village raids, airstrikes, internet shutdown etc. I hope that the declaration took into account these considerations and has contingency plans on how to mitigate them.

More than 3,000 US Paratroopers jumped into Normandy on #DDay. Among them: Father Francis Sampson, chaplain for the @101stAASLTDIV's 501st PIR.

Francis, an Iowa native and Notre Dame grad, landed in the Douve River and had to cut off all his gear to avoid drowning.

Hours later, Francis along with 27 US Soldiers (from various units) were captured by German forces in Saint-Come-du-Mont.

Francis refused efforts by his captors (some of whom were Catholic) to move him to safety.

Francis remained at an exposed medic station at Saint-Come-du-Mont and helped treat both German and American Soldiers in the face of an artillery bombardment.

He also gave his own blood in a transfusion to a wounded American Soldier.

"A Mighty Endeavor"

Today's episode of #DavesCarIDService is dedicated to the men and machines of the D-Day Invasion. All gave some, some gave all.
*The fallen machine is of course an iconic WW2 Jeep, either a Willys MB or identical twin Ford GPW. Almost 650,000 of these were produced 1942-45. The earlier Ford GP model is where the "Jeep" got its affectionate nickname which later became its brand.
In addition to our regular fare, today's thread will feature some IDs relevant to the liberation of Europe. If you've got family pics of WW2 GIs & their cars, they will get prompt attention.
