As more stories come out of Brooklyn Center, one critical detail has been buried in the coverage: Kim Potter, the police officer who murdered Daunte Wright, was also involved in helping fellow officers cover up the murder of Kobe-Dimock Heisler in 2019. newsweek.com/daunte-wright-…
Potter was the police union president at the time, and one of the first officers to arrive on the scene. Kobe Dimock-Heisler, who was on the autism spectrum, was shot by police 6 times. Potter counseled the officers so no criminal charges were filed. facebook.com/watch/?v=73528…

NEW: A coalition of grassroots & racial justice orgs fighting to dismantle 94 Crime Bill just sent this letter to @SpeakerPelosi, urging Congress once again to stop fueling nation’s policing, criminalization, and incarceration crises through funding allocations.
Were Congress to continue funding policing,
particularly at levels it's considering this appropriations period, it would represent a staggering & unforgiveable undermining of #DefendBlackLives & #DefundPolice movement and the needs of communities nationwide during this pandemic.
It would be unconscionable for Congress to ignore and ultimately reject the central tenet of the largest social movement in U.S. history if it were to now send hundreds of millions of dollars to reinforce police budgets, police power, and police departments’ violent behavior.

Defunding and divesting from the police looks different in every city and requires participation from the community, including ours.

Planned Parenthood stands with @Mvmnt4BlkLives and we will be following their lead on the ways we can partner to strengthen Black communities.
We stand with #DefundThePolice because it’s a call to divest from police and invest in Black communities. It prioritizes services that strengthen community-based solutions, education, and health care instead of militarizing police forces.
As health care experts, we know racism is a public health crisis. Our #1 priority is the health & safety of our patients & that doesn't stop once they leave our centers. The treatment of Black people by police is the antithesis of the standards we envision for our bodies & lives.
