My #DerekChauvinSentencing remarks for news shows on Friday have earned me condemnation in some circles and support in others. Ibram X. Kendi (author of How To Be An Antiracist) and I, for instance, took opposite positions when commenting on Chauvin’s sentence for @CBSNLive.
Kendi’s position—shared by most everyone—was that Chauvin should get maximum punishment. His rationale: if Chauvin were Black, he’d get severe punishment (as I show in N*gga Theory, courts do mete out more draconian sentences to Blacks), so punish him with that level of severity.
For too many, racial equality means treating White wrongdoers with the same draconian severity we already apply to similarly situated Black ones. For them, equality in punitiveness is an equality worth striving for. I demur, for down that road racial injustice lies.

Derek Chauvin, convicted murderer formerly with the @MinneapolisPD, was sentenced to 22.5 years in prison for killing #GeorgeFloyd.

This is now the longest sentence ever given to a former cop for a killing committed in the line of duty.

After being sentenced, #DerekChauvin was sent straight to prison with 199 days credit for time he’s already served in jail.

Judge Cahill said the 270 month sentence he handed Chauvin is based on his "abuse in a position of authority & the "cruelty" he showed to #GeorgeFloyd.
Chauvin was found guilty of unintentional second-degree murder, third degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in one of the most historic murder trials of the century that concluded on April 20, 2021.

Good cops, and there are a whole lot of them in America, provide more value to society than we can ever pay them back in terms of salary and benefits. We need them badly.

But bad cops, like former officer #DerekChauvin, are an incalculable liability to society and to taxpayers.
This man, who is now a convicted murderer and under multiple federal indictments, had a gun, a badge and a taxpayer-funded salary less than 13 months ago today.

What is the impact of people like this on society? Let’s count the ways.
People like Chauvin and others who abuse their authority as officers:

- Hurt and kill the people they swore an oath to protect.
- Destroy the faith of many citizens in the idea of policing.
- Cost taxpayers a literal fortune. Nobody Defunds the Police more than bad cops.

NEW FROM @CBSNewsPoll: Three in four Americans think the jury reached the right verdict in which former police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of murder in the death of George Floyd, a majority view that spans across all racial, age and partisan groups.
The smaller portion of Americans — 25% —  who believe the jury reached the wrong verdict strongly disagree with the ideas of the Black Lives Matter movement. This group is composed of more men than women, is disproportionately White and they mostly identify as conservative.
@POTUS Biden, who has called the #DerekChauvin verdict a step forward, gets a 60% approval rating for his general handling of matters surrounding George Floyd's death and Chauvin's trial. This is similar to his overall job rating as he closes in on 100 days in office.

Breaking story: Maryland’s Attorney General plans to review all in-custody death reports in the state from 2003-2020 following the testimony of Dr. David Fowler in the #DerekChauvin trial. baltimoresun.com/news/crime/bs-…
The news also comes days after the family of #AntonBlack spoke out against Fowler testifying in the #DerekChauvin trial. Black, 19, died in police custody in 2018. His family filed a lawsuit nearly two years later. baltimoresun.com/news/crime/bs-…

Ma’Khia Bryant being killed by the Columbus Police Department at the time we were awaiting a #DerekChauvin verdict proves our exact point about why this case was a drop in a bucket in the criminal punishment system. We need much more than police reform. We need abolition.
There were many things the police could have done to to de-escalate what they saw as conflict. But they don’t know how. The fact that many people can’t believe that to be true means the police have convinced us that there entire job is to kill first and ask questions later.
De-escalation does NOT require or demand using deadly force.

If the police only job is to kill people, then why do we need them? We could all do that.

The fact that so many people desperately believe the police HAD to kill a young Black girl is... exactly how it seems.

I am relieved that #DerekChauvin was convicted today for murdering George Floyd. I breathe in this rare moment when the public recognized the value of a Black man's life and held an officer accountable for taking it. I am, as always, hopeful. And yet...
I am concerned about the political naïvete in some of the public commentary about the #DerekChauvinTrial. Some well-meaning and excited folks are saying things like, "This sends a message to police departments that they have to respect Black lives."

But... does it?
Think about how extreme #DerekChauvin's actions had to be to elicit this outcome.

Observe that the prosecutor made clear that the case was *only* about the 9 minutes and 29 seconds that Chauvin knelt on George Floyd's neck.

Now to be clear the judge said it was too prejudicial for the jury to hear her testimony about Chauvin.

Just walked the Hennepin Co Government Center perimeter. Doesn't appear to be any obvious beefed up security measures outside. A heads up, court calendar now showing an 8:45am motions hearing in #DerekChauvinTrail
In terms of this morning's #DerekChauvinTrial motions hearing -- the buzz around the courthouse is the defense is objecting to one final expert witness prosecutors want to call. Attorney Eric Nelson arguing it's "cumulative," and there's been enough state expert analysis already.
One other issue I will be looking for this AM. Does Judge Cahill address events of last 24 hours in any way w/ the jury? Poll jurors to know who saw what, whether they have been prejudiced at all by the deadly police shooting & overnight unrest? #DerekChauvinTrial #GeorgeFloyd

A medical expert in the physiology of breathing testified in the murder trial of Derek Chauvin that the way George Floyd was restrained — handcuffed behind his back, face-down on the ground, with a knee on his neck — prevented him from breathing properly.
Dr. Martin Tobin, called as an expert witness by the prosecution, said the cause of Floyd's death was hypoxia, or a low level of oxygen that led to asphyxia, or suffocation. The overall effect of the restraint was almost "as if a surgeon had gone in and removed the lung,"
