One bad thing re getting involved in the #discourse about church/culture going downhill in various ways:

My whole life since conversion I have had a sense of the trajectory of the world/culture/non-Christians' lives as "towards Christ" because that's how it worked for me.
My baseline was that you wake up in a fully-formed world full of story & strangeness & extreme weather & holidays & beautiful architecture & Arthurian legends, but that there's a mystery about it, because there's no metaphysical accounting for how solidly wonderful it is.
Not just wonderful, but seemingly pregnant with meaning. No one around me was Christian and most of them if they had thought about it would have not been moral realists; they were mostly materialists.

1/50 #Science is an ongoing process that serves to investigate phenomena, gain new insights or "correct prior knowledge" and this only works in #discourse. This includes diversity of #Opinion, #tolerance and a broad debate space. This is a large thread.
2/50 "#trust the science" is in my view the most #antiscience statement ever. #Questioning science is how you do #Science. This thread gives some examples and further questions.

3/50 What about good ##scientific #Practice? I found a glaring example here (of all things, in what I consider to be a rush to #vaccine #approval). #blotgate

#Civil and intelligent conversation That involves #criticalthinking skills,self-regulation, #reflection, mutual respect respectful debate, direct conversation are #socialskills all research based Scientific evidence is highly encouraged here. I encourage this on my
Twitter feed to engage in civil #discourse
To #question everything, to be self-aware and insightful,
to allow open #transparent #ooen conversations & discourse free of denial, not listening, talking over others, not letting them finish their sentences, being angry and rageful.
These #behaviors do nothing to advance any cause. #Safeguarders & mediators are very important to the well-being of children miners and disabled adults. when it comes to #childsafety anyone who mocks child safety needs to seriously reflect and/or take A child safety course.

#thevaishalidialogues #vaishali #bihar #lordbuddha #lordmahavira #buddhism #jainism #dhamma #discourse #discuss

ढूँढो उसे, जगाओ उनको जिनकी ध्वजा गिरी है;

The Vaishali Dialogues is an initiative by the youths of Vaishali to bring back its glory and make the golden historic hymns echo to this world.

Vaishali, situated in Vaishali district in Bihar, is believed to be the world’s first republic and is currently an archaeological site in India. Vaishali derives its name from son of Ikshwaku queen Alambusha, King Vishala, whose heroic deeds find a reference in the Mahabharata.
Various references to Vaishali can be traced in texts of both Jainism and Buddhism. Vaishali was established in 6th century BCE as a republic, i.e., before the birth of Gautam Buddha, thereby making it the world’s first republic.

My take on the latest #discourse on Labour left Twitter: I’m less interested in MPs’ class backgrounds from a sociological point of view than I am in what role they’ve played in class struggle. How many Labour MPs have been involved in organising a strike in their own workplace?
It’s still fairly common to get Labour MPs who’ve worked as trade union officials and bureaucrats of various kinds. But how many have (recently) been rank-and-file workers and union activists with direct experience of struggle?
This article by @socialistkate from 2017 is still bang on: theclarionmag.org/2017/06/12/lab… Image

***On the conditions of authority in academic publics***

This thread 👇🏼 summarizes recent article by Ingrid Piller in Journal of #Sociolinguistics for the busy reader

#research #AcademicTwitter Image
Q: What makes a #text credible, trustworthy and authoritative?

Many people think it's the quality of #discourse: that some ways of using #language make text more believable

Certainly true BUT: world leaders may talk complete nonsense and still command authority and get elected ImageImage
That is because "#authority comes to #language from outside” (Bourdieu, 1991, p. 109) Image

That's how a #discourse ("Chinese influence") functions: the author can't help herself, & meanwhile the discourse is repeated "at every opportunity" & goes capillary. When lots of such suggestive, speculative and make-believe points are made and go challenged, they become real.
Should be read as "go unchallenged"
And then they become unchangeable. Anyone who dare to question them will have lost the dominant "commonsense" language to speak back. Even if someone does manage to voice dissent, he/she would look and sound strange, with voices that few can understand.
