On Saturday, I led 30 young Community Recycling Champions to observe the #EarthDay2021 as one of the strategies in implementing the #MissionZeroPlastic initiative in #KwaraState. The CRCs #CleanUpTanke and recovered 211 Kg (5,908)
@Areai4Africa

#Recycle4Education #AREAixTCCF
5,908 #Pet #plastic were recovered from Item7, Tanke Oke - Odo to Bovas Filling Station, Tanke (3.2 Km and 7 mins walk, thanks to @googlemaps).

This shows the high level of #plasticpollution in Tanke alone.

Thanks to all #volunteers that participated in the clean-up.

#plastic
Just imagine the volume of #plastic we would have recovered if we covered the whole Tanke, #Ilorin

The #MissionZeroPlastic Initiative is proudly sponsored by the #CocaColaFoundation @TheCocaColaCo and implemented by @areai4africa @EcowarriorsNG

Outdoor retailer REI has pledged to cut its planet-warming emissions in half over the next decade.

But that isn’t stopping the company from using its eco-friendly image to help Ford promote gas-guzzling SUVs.

@sammy_roth has the story:
latimes.com/business/story…
In a series of ads and videos sponsored by the carmaker, the latest of which was released this week, REI chronicles the journey of four cyclists traversing a 220-mile route through Arizona known as the Sky Islands Odyssey.

Jamie Henn, founder of the advocacy group Fossil Free Media, is critical of the campaign, saying “creativity has consequences.”

This thread discusses an extremely interesting excerpt from a book I'm reading called "Spillover: Animal Infections and the Next Human Pandemic" by David Quammen. The author lists these events and asks the reader: What do they have in common?

I try to spend as much time outdoors away from the city as possible b/c it is scientifically proven to be good for our physical & mental well-being. Black folk have not only been dispossessed of land but we have also been systematically excluded from natural places #EarthDay2021
68% of Black folk live in nature-deprived areas. That means our communities "receive less of nature’s benefits, including air and water purification, climate mitigation, biodiversity and disease control, and opportunities for leisure and recreation."
Black folk are 75 percent more likely than others to live near facilities that produce hazardous waste #EarthDay2021

Molly innately respected all forms of life. We didn’t teach this to her; she taught us.

I love this story from one of her theatre friends about how they found a dead 🐝 and Molly insisted on a funeral. And this chart she sent to Eme about eating animas, remarking, “How sad!”
From the youngest age, Molly would gaze out to the ocean, sitting still for a long time.

Molly was scared about climate change. She worried about the future of our planet.

This #EarthDay2021 , I’m committing to a #MeatlessMayForMolly. #TEAMMOLLY, I’d love for you to join me!
#MollysMeatlessMondays are also awesome if you aren’t ready for a month of vegetarianism yet.

As Molly and Makena wrote in their song, “Change the world to what you wish it could be. If not for you, then do it for me.”

Happy Earth Day! Many Jodo Shinshu temples hold annual Earth Day services, and concerned North American and Hawaiian Shin Buddhists have long promoted awareness of ecological concerns.

For instance, in 1970 the Pacific Seminar (the primary annual study session of the Buddhist Churches of America) included a keynote session on “Ecology and Buddhism” and a mandatory viewing and discussion of “Multiply and Subdue the Earth,” a film on man-made environmental crises
Scouting is part of many young Jodo Shinshu Buddhists’ lives, and often where the first environmental efforts occur. In 1973 the BCA began to support Keep America Beautiful Day. Local temple scout groups engaged in litter clean-up drives and educated themselves about pollution.

On this #EarthDay lets celebrate the profound relationship we share with our celestial mother.

Across cultures, ancient ancestors have sung praises of Earth.

Thousands of years ago In India, in Atharva Veda's "Bhoomi Sukta", our ancestors cherished Earth soulfully.

translated summary -

She is a beautiful tapestry of seas and rivers. In her, she holds our food, which manifests when we plough her.

In her reside the four directions. She provides food, when ploughed. In her is alive, that what gives life. May she bestow us with the aliveness of life.

It's official: Biden will commit to reduce US greenhouse gas emissions 50-52% below 2005 levels by the end of the decade. He'll make the commitment at 8am EST today as the virtual climate summit with world leaders kicks off.
nytimes.com/live/2021/04/2…

#ClimateAction #EarthDay2021
This goal is almost double the commitment the Obama Admin set for 2025 (25-28% below 2005) and requires accelerating the pace of emissions declined observed over the last decade. See below for progress to date (via @rhodium_group). 2030 goal requires ~3,200 MMT CO2 equivalent.
Making this goal a reality will require steep reductions in fossil fuel use across all sectors.

We'd have to virtually eliminate coal from power generation by 2030, ramp up clean sources (to more than double today's share), and cut electricity emissions to 75-80% below 2005.

The ‘individually wrapped grapes’ in the video aren’t real...

And so too was the outrage you perhaps felt....

It’s time to channel that outrage into action. #EarthDay
