1. On the second anniversary of the #ElPasoShooting, #Mexico is suing 10 US gun manufacturers and distributors for their responsibility in flooding the nation with arms.

Some 70-90% of the arms found at Mexican crime scenes can be traced to the US.

nytimes.com/2021/08/04/wor…
2. US manufacturers make some $250 million a year on selling arms to Mexico, knowingly targeting the market with guns that have Spanish nicknames, quotes, even the engraving of Emiliano Zapata's face (the model used in the killing of journalist Miroslava Breach by Sinaloa Cartel)
3. As I wrote at the time of the shooting, Mexico's strict gun-control laws are constantly undermined by US laxity. Indeed, nearly 1/2 of US dealers depend upon sales to Mexico to survive. Illegal trafficking of arms to Mexico isn't even a federal crime.

Today on the 2nd anniversary of the #ElPasoShooting we stand in solidarity with our siblings of El Paso to honor the lives of those we lost that day. #ElPasoStrong #ElPasoFirme
El Paso is the heartbeat of the border, a city that unites cultures & languages. It shines as a beacon of hope for refugees, asylum seekers & immigrants from all over the world.
The shooting in El Paso was the deadliest assault on the Latinx community in history. Yet, gun violence fueled by white supremacy is still a clear & present danger.

The #ElPasoSyllabus:

It’s been 2 weeks since the horrendous shooting in El Paso, the murder of 22 innocent individuals & wounding of 24 others. 2 weeks, #ElPasoShooting is no longer trending, most news outlets have dropped the story, the process of forgetting has begun.
There are several things that may explain why we’ve begun to forget El Paso. Many people don’t know the city and it may seems geographically far removed from the worldview of folks unfamiliar with the Southwest.
The victims of the shooting, mainly Mexican/Mexican American people, may seem unfamiliar to some Americans, beyond the rhetoric/stereotyping of the immigration reform debate. Many people probably don’t see Mexican-origin people as the “normal” victims of racist violence.

I don't think most people understand the dailiness of #gunviolence in America. This incident happened within less than a mile of our house. There have been three men shot to death in front of our house in the past 4yrs as I've recorded in real time on here. That's madness.
1/
The good news about the #PhillyShooting is no one was killed. Women and kids were extricated safely. The 6 cops had minor gunshots wounds, the hostages were safely extricated and the shooter was unharmed. That's all amazing. But the shooter fired hundreds of rounds over 8hrs.
2/
This is another story of civilians with arsenals of weapons. That should be illegal. The cop who was shot in the head missed death by a literal inch. He has two small kids. In the #ElPasoShooting and #DaytonShooting more than a dozen kids were left motherless, some newborns.

1/ On Saturday 3 August 2019, Patrick Wood Crusius allegedly went on a shooting rampage inside a Walmart in El Paso, Texas. He traveled about 1,050 km (~650 miles) from his home in Allen, Texas to do so.
2/ Tragically, 22 people have died while another 24 were wounded. About 30 minutes prior to the shooting, Crusius published manifesto online, ranting against immigration and declaring that “this attack is a response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas.”

In April, @MarieDennise & I met a beautiful El Paso family that illustrated the city's cross-border identity. (tinyurl.com/y4zcervf) This week we were back reporting on the #elpasoshooting & were horrified to hear they were among the first victims.

They were raising money outside the Walmart for their 10-year-old daughter Karina’s soccer team, selling the traditional Mexican snacks of chicharrónes and aguas frescas when the gunman started firing.
The victims from the fundraiser were quintessential El Pasoans: Hispanic and bilingual with deep roots in Texas and Mexico. Their lives revolve around their children’s baseball and soccer teams. Their lives spanned the border.

@Thom_Hartmann I actually did a study of this; I compared gun ownership versus killings, nation by nation, and there was no relationship statistically. Pastor Michael Grady, just talked with Anderson Cooper on @AC360. He was breathtakingly good. His daughter, Michelle, was severely wounded at the WalMart in #ElPasoShooting. She's in critical.
A big man with a generous manner, he spoke about her, his wife, the shooting.
1/
Grady has the imposing manner of a black preacher--you can tell he gives a powerful sermon. Grady also spoke about Trump & how lacking in passion his speech on hate was. He said, "Words matter. How you use your words matters." He said words can be healing, but Trump's weren't.
2/
Grady talked about how there have been no consequences to these shootings. Of Trump he said once words are out there you can't take them back. he said "words of divisiveness and hatred matter. You don't know who will receive them or how they will be received."

Almost ALL of those killed in #ElPasoShooting were #Latinos. And yet I see no mention of this in headlines or in chyrons. The largest minority in this county was targeted. Why are the headlines about Trump? elpasotimes.com/story/news/201…
There is a serious problem here. The focus is almost exclusively on the president. Latinos are just props in some larger narrative. Its horrific.
When the stories are written and the headlines and the news briefs overlook (I’m being generous here) who was targeted , you have to ask yourself why. I seriously hope every news show and Sunday show and opinion page allows voices from our community to be heard.

After the three #MassShootings we saw last week, we're talking to David Zuckerman, a domestic terrorism expert. Here's why he thinks shutting down platforms like 8Chan, which 3 mass shooters have used to spread/share #WhiteSupremacist ideologies WILL NOT prevent violence
@FOX40
@FOX40 Many of the young men behind mass shootings used 8Chan to share manifestos and post hate-filled messages hours before they carried out their attacks. The perpetrators in #PowayShooting #NewZealandTerroristAttack and the #ElPasoShooting all had that in common. @FOX40 Image
@FOX40 "Do your part and spread this brothers!...I'm probably going to die today. Keep up the good fight."

Part of the manifesto the #ElPasoTerroristAttack shooter posted to 8Chan a little while before he carried out the attack. Today the site was banned by its online host. @FOX40 Image

The past week has been shocking: #DaytonShooting #ElPasoShooting #GilroyShooting #BrownsvilleShooting. We've all got to do our part on #gunviolence in America. That starts by learning about the problem and solutions. Over the past year & a half, I've devoted myself to this cause.
Season 3 of my podcast @ISIHpodcast insicknessandinhealthpodcast.com has covered #gunviolence in America. In our first chapter, we tackled the unique history that produced America's gun culture. In our second chapter, we delve into how race and gender intersect with guns and gun violence.
@ISIHpodcast In the third chapter of Season 3 of @ISIHpodcast insicknessandinhealthpodcast.com we focused on #guns themselves: do more guns lead to more vs less crime... what does it look like when people use guns in self-defense... instrumentality... & the impact of Australia's gun buyback.

Still seeing a lot of folks referring to the recent #massshootings as terrorist attacks. I know it's tempting to turn the messaging of the state back on itself, but our Muslim comrades have instructed us again and again not to do this #ElPasoShooting #WhiteNationalism
"Terrorist" is an inherently racist, and specifically anti-Arab and anti-Muslim, construct invented for the targeting and criminalization of specific communities. #ElPasoShooting #WhiteNationalism
Trying to label #WhiteNationalism as a form of terrorism may feel like poetic justice, but it does more to reinforce that category than to undo it, which is what our goal needs to be #ElPasoShooting

White supremacist patriarchy is lethal #ElPasoMassShooting

In less than 24 hours, two white men shot dead at least 29 mostly Black and brown people.
White patriarchy - whether it’s “rape list” during high school type or “white people are being replaced by immigrants” type is lethal.

When the president is a white supremacist who has been accused by at least 21 women of sexual assault, white patriarchy is enabled from the top

The #ElPasoShooting is another tragic example of domestic terrorism being fueled by white nationalist, who unfortunately are given cover by the words and deeds of this President.
.@realDonaldTrump has directly attacked African Americans and Latinos from the first moment he launched his campaign.
He rode down the escalator at Trump Tower and called Mexicans rapist and has repeatedly referred to what is happening at the border as an invasion, exact words used by white supremacist to justify their terrorists acts. #RootOutRacism

being radicalized by an organized, coherent and violent ideology isn’t “mental illness,” and while white supremacist killers might be looking for a “high score” that’s less to do with video games and more dehumanizing their victims. these explanations are tired and inadequate.
there’s enough white supremacist propaganda free on the internet to reach every lonely guy who wants to feel part of a bigger cause. of “defending his race” from “invaders.” that’s not mental illness, it’s strategically spread propaganda. and not a game. lives are at stake.
the #elpasoshooting is the third mass murder linked to far-right message board 8chan in just the last six months. we know the vectors, we know the ideology, and its wages are violence and death.

In light of our first Pacific Rim style "double event" massacres yesterday, it's worth stepping back and asking what will solve this accelerating problem?

Because if the underlying problem doesn't get solved, we're going to have a triple event day before too long.
Setting aside (briefly) the white supremacy of the redhat auxiliaries who've now targeted black churches, synagogues, and now Latino shoppers, we have to start with the guns.

As in: how do we get them out of the hands of these kinds of dudes?
The answer, undeniably, is federal legislation.

State and city guns laws don't do shit because there's always a redder state nearby where any idiot can stock up, drive two hours, then sell off. (Hello, Chicago and northwest Indiana!)
