@TwinTurboCe1ica 1/ This is a very nuanced topic. First, to the pricing point - pricing of what? Say natural flake. Okay so, what type of natural flake, what quality, where is it produced, is it vertically integrated, which supply chain is it feeding, what end product is it creating?
@TwinTurboCe1ica 2/ all of this affects flake graphite concentrate price. Then you need to look at synthetic vs flake as less of a "substition" and more of a balance, see image attached.
@TwinTurboCe1ica 3/ Understanding sythentic graphite is important. Artificial graphite for battery anodes (need to be specific here) is better than natural graphite in efficiency, cycle life, the way it can be curated, morphology, sometimes conductivity and the way it reacts to coatings.

<thread> Tesla & #Lithium - a decade in the making

A lithium refinery has been in Tesla & Elon Musk’s @elonmusk thinking for ~10 yrs now & in (a serious way) for the best part of 3 yrs

The logic is sound

2020: 70-80% of lithium ion battery costs are raw materials

2010: 20-30%
Tesla has filed to build a lithium hydroxide refining facility in Texas (Gulf Coast).

This is a revisiting of its 2020 plan to build a spodumene conversion facility to make lithium hydroxide at #GigaTexas

Originally planned to launch Q4 2022.
This #GigaTexas lithium refinery would have been using a new hydromet process, as not to be reliant on sulphuric acid.

Our estimation was a smaller refinery to start with 15,000 tpa lithium hydroxide. Could now be 25,000tpa

What we mean by this is outlined in this thread:
Future EV demand is surging beyond the ability of the lithium ion battery supply chain to respond in full.
As we approach the end of the decade, the number of EVs that’s OEMs want to produce become impossible to make considering the critical battery raw material volumes in the pipeline … if all existing expansions and new mines make it, in most cases there still wont be enough

#Spot #lithium traded as above is usually representative of tiny volumes at different districts in China. Could probably spend a whole thread describing lithium prices in different areas but that'd be a waste of time. Take away point is the volume is tiny but it's a trend.
The head price you see here is representative of what traders/chemical producers are getting for product sold typically to #cathode #producers who use the chemicals to create lithium batteries.

#Nickel is on red alert.

Norilsk is the world’s largest class 1 nickel producer accounting for 20% of global supply
Norilsk overall accounts for 7% of all in nickel supply. But EV makers, auto OEMs and battery cell producers will terrified of losing 20% of a market with prices already at decade long highs.
China will not place real any sanctions on Russia and as a result ensure all #nickel continues to flow into its mainland and into Chinese made battery cells and EVs

The develop a lithium ion economy, UK must target three major supplies of lithium ion batteries - Tesla? LG Chem? SK Innivation? CATL? Panasonic?

It must build in parallel giga-sized anode and cathode plants to fuel these super sized battery plants.

It should be of interest to investors that #ACP announced their 3rd MOU, just 10 days after the 15th Oct resource upgrade.

Said off take took total off takes under MOU to 60,000 tpa, which ACP stated at time was "122% of the 49,000 tpa average annual production target."

The key word being 'average.'

The #ACP Scoping Study delivered a 32 year mine life at average grade of 12.5% and it is that which will deliver the ave. 49,000 tpa.

However, the 15th October upgrade delivered 4.3Mt at average grade of 15.9%.

At the same 400,000 tpa plant throughput, that much improved head grade, delivering the same percentage output, is capable of delivering 62,300 tpa for the first 10 years of mine operation.

Said figure sits nicely above the total 60,000 tpa in MOUs signed by #ACP to date.
