Celebrating our first-ever Latin digital issue with our latest cover star, @daddy_yankee

He spent decades making hits that changed the world. The reggaeton legend tells us why it's now time to put down the mic.

Story/Photos: rol.st/3xyYgo8
So why is @daddy_yankee, as he mounts his biggest tour ever, stepping away from making music?

"It was always my goal to carry the banner and lead, and then have other people keep going."

"We’re growing every day. If tomorrow a new genre comes along and it’s Latino, it’s going to be successful, because our cultural expressions and our art are going to keep rising."

I’m proud of Utah’s Compact on Immigration. We are a Red State that welcome immigrants. That still doesn’t stop Congressmen like @RepBurgessOwens who flock to the Southern border to exploit the desperation of people seeking a better life. Instead of drawing on the #UtahWay #utpol
and working with Democrats on long overdue immigration reform, they use immigration, immigrants, and human suffering to scare and enrage their base. There is a crisis at the border and a majority of it exists because it’s used as a campaign talking-point. The party of ‘fiscal
responsibility’ used Florida’s taxpayer’s money to pick up migrants that weren’t even in his state. Republicans brag about inroads the GOP has made with Hispanic voters. DeSantis and Abbott doing this on the eve of Hispanic Heritage Month reeks of Trump wanting to hold a rally

Today is the first day of #HispanicHeritageMonth!

I'd like to begin a 31-day thread here with the goal of sharing stories & images that reflect my northern New Mexico heritage.

On Day 1, let me begin with this @9NEWS video from 2017 featuring my grandma. 1/
Day 2: Los Penitentes were religious community advocates in remote villages.

AKA, “Los Hermanos de la Fraternidad Piadosa de Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno.”

My great-grandfather, Roman Lopez, was a farmer & leader with title “Hermano Mayor.”

Day 3: Al Hurricane and NM Spanish Music! 🎶

This music has a very distinct style with many regional bands.

Hurricane has been called “El Godfather” of New Mexico Music.

My favorite NM Spanish song is Valentin de La Sierra by Tobias Rene: open.spotify.com/track/6QO1KeYE… Image

The @Cardinals’ promotion of Oliver Marmol was expected from the minute they had fired Mike Shildt.
That says a lot about Bill DeWitt Jr., John Mozeliak & Michael Girsch.
They are handing over the keys to one of America’s premier franchises to a young, Dominican American
History shows that Latinos & Blacks usually have to start their managerial careers at losing organizations not ready to win or past their winning windows. Alex Cora was a rare example. Now Marmol is another one.
By promoting Marmol, the #Cardinals are making franchise history.
He’s an example of what every organization committed to diversity should do. Find talented folks, let them work their way up, groom them, nurture them, test them and let them find their ceiling. Marmol is young, and that is a good thing. He’s bilingual, bright, hungry, HUMBLE!

FACT: The Republican Party in #PuertoRico was FOUNDED by a BLACK Afro-Puerto Rican, by the name of Dr. Jose Celso Barbosa.

Now, you look 👀 for Blacks in the leadership of the #PuertoRican Republican Party, and it’s not so much easy; it’s like a “white out” generally very, very, WHITE light-skin looking Boriquas. A few even with blonde hair.

It’s shameful.

¡Hola a todxs, I’m @davillasana! As a Hispanic woman, most of my photography focuses on resilience against injustice as well as culture and diversity in Latin America. My identity also shapes my passion for increasing inclusivity in the media industry. #HispanicHeritageMonth Credit: Abel Santander Gamarra
Some of these stories include documenting the threats facing transgender women in Latin America and their resilience despite them. For nearly a decade, I’ve strived to paint a more humanistic portrait of this community to educate others about transphobia’s dire consequences. Another story I loved photographing was that of a young girl’s quinceañera, or “coming-of-age” celebration, in Mexico where it’s widely practiced. When I asked Lorena her favorite part, she responded “the dress!” She quickly backtracked, saying family first and the dress second. #HispanicHeritageMonth is designated as an all-encompassing celebration of Latinos and their cultures. Yet, many say it falls short of that endeavor, and some are calling for the month to be reimagined.

So who really are the Latinos living in the US?

Latino communities are continuously evolving, staking a greater claim in politics, Hollywood, and other industries and re-conceptualizing the way they identify.
