1/15 The link between Inequality and Gun Violence:

🧵 There's a complex web of factors that contribute to gun violence, but two elements that demand our attention are high inequality and permissive gun laws. Let's take a deep dive into how these factors intersect. Image
2/15 It's important to start with understanding the correlation between inequality and violence.

When socio-economic disparities widen, frustrations increase. This can result in heightened tensions and often leads to more violence. #IncomeInequality #Violence Image
3/15 Studies show that societies with larger income gaps tend to have higher rates of violence.

This is particularly true for the US, where inequality has grown considerably over the past few decades. #IncomeInequality Image

1/7 📉 The late 90s and 2000s were characterized by low interest rates and tax cuts.

While these policies were intended to stimulate the economy, they’ve also had significant implications for wealth inequality in the United States. #economics #inequality
2/7 💵 Low interest rates make borrowing cheaper.

This can benefit wealthy individuals and corporations who have access to credit, enabling them to invest in businesses, real estate, and other assets that can generate wealth. #interestrates #wealthgap
3/7 🏦 For ordinary Americans, however, low interest rates can mean reduced returns on savings.

With little to no growth on their savings, it becomes harder for the middle class to build wealth. #savings #middleclass

1/5 Supply-side economics💰claims that tax cuts for rich people and businesses spur growth. But is it that simple? Let’s delve into it. #EconomicPolicy #SupplySideEconomics Image
2/5 First up, tax cuts can boost income inequality. The rich get richer, while funding for public services, often benefiting the less affluent, takes a hit due to less government revenue 💸. #IncomeInequality 📈 Image
3/5 Second, supply-side theory assumes companies will reinvest their extra cash to grow and create jobs 👷‍♀️🧑‍✈️. But what if they use the funds for stock buybacks or increased executive pay instead? 🤔💰 #CorporateBehavior Image

A reminder that there are three men leading the Critical Race Theory hysteria:
Thomas W. Smith, through his foundation
James Piereson, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute
Christopher Rufo
Popular Info details how the Thomas W. Smith Foundation paid Piereson $283,333 to work for 25 hours per week per its last 990. He describes "climate change, income inequality, [and] immigrant rights" as "radical causes."

The Manhattan Institute is the top recipient of cash from The Thomas W. Smith Foundation ($4.32 million from 2017-2019). Christopher Rufo, a senior fellow, claims CRT is an “existential threat to the United States.”

He has actively agitated for CRT to become a wedge issue. Image

Police claim “unlawful assembly” after killing 20 year old young black man, with his mom on the phone and his girlfriend beside him as they drove to visit his older brother and see his new home. Here is the PDF from the @aclu_mn re: protests. #BlackLivesMatter
Minneapolis police knew, or should have known, the killing of a young black man stopped in his vehicle, will result in protests. The police should have been prepared for protests and de-escalated it. Journalists have been reporting that police officers are quitting the “force”
because of fear of danger after the George Floyd trial outcome. Therefore, they knew of the repercussions of killing, wrongfully, a young black man. #EnoughIsEnough #StopSystemicRacism

To those who support #FightFor15, increasing the #MinimumWage and reducing #IncomeInequality: By 2025, the wage would have to be ~$20 to equal the $15 asked for when this began.

That's why we need to stop talking about a "minimum" wage and start talking about an #AmericanWage.
An #AmericanWage is the wage needed to provide for the basic needs of American life.

It clarifies to people of any political alignment or value system, that wages are meant to provide a standard of living adequate to all Americans.
Yes, cost of living varies by state. But the purpose of the #AmericanWage is to establish a baseline for what your wage buys, not an arbitrary number lacking the consideration of determining what that wage buys.

Yes, a worker in West Virginia needs less than someone in New York.

A thought on #NYC: the city isn’t dying, but it has problems: the cost of living is too high, #incomeinequality is rampant, and the city’s blood runs through its #transit system. Some things to consider:
(1) The #rent is too damn high, the residential market is distorted, and despite a 10% decline in #Manhattan rents they are still among the highest in the country #housing nytimes.com/2020/08/18/nyr…
(2) Some people are leaving the city. #Housing demand in the #suburbs can shift back to the city, but the suburbs make more sense for families now nytimes.com/2020/08/30/nyr…

#Unions helped build the American middle class and they protect workers and communities from the damaging effects of #incomeinequality, and today, the @MA_Senate stood in solidarity with union members across Massachusetts #mapoli

I’m pleased that the Stop & Shop strike has ended. Workers stood strong together and demanded fair wages & benefits, and through collective action, they won. Organized labor is a vital way for workers to make their voices heard.

Throughout our history, the #LaborMovement has been the source of so many rights we take for granted: eliminating of child labor, creating of the minimum wage & the 5-day work week, workplace safety standards, & comprehensive health benefits.

#StopDontShop #UnionStrong #MApoli
In this era of extreme #IncomeInequality and tectonic shifts in the global economy, labor unions still protect the most vulnerable workers and secure rights which benefit all of us!

As documented by @TheAtlantic's always-excellent @JamesFallows, one of the underappreciated factors in 2016 election is the failure of #journalism to do its job (one Jim story-- he has many others).
...My thoughts on how to prevent repeat in 2020: <thread>
theatlantic.com/notes/2017/09/…
In 2016, MSM obsessively covered @HillaryClinton emails, while ignoring the far-more-important story of #FBI investigation of the Trump campaign. This failure had a major impact on the election's outcome. My analysis is shaped by experience in both in #journalism and politics:
We're seeing exactly the same dynamic in the 2020 campaign that we saw in 2016: MSM is focusing on horserace issues & GOP talking points, rather than delving into SUBSTANTIVE differences between the candidates. This could determine outcome of Dem primaries-- & general election.

Now 3hrs into a SWAT scene in #Miami #Wynwood neighborhood - police negotiating the surrender of a woman in a car with a gun - here is what we know at this point:
@WPLGLocal10
Five hours into it now, Miami police are waiting her out.
From our reporting, it appears the woman either does/did live at Camillus House, and/or uses the homeless-care facilities there.. she may live in that car now, tells police she has the gun for her protection
@WPLGLocal10
Sun is setting & she has not moved, still in the passenger seat of the Honda with the handgun, surrounded by Miami police officers & talking to the hostage negotiator. FWIW- that magazine on her dashboard appears to be the Jan/Feb 2019 edition of World of Firepower

As we see debates about increasing the top marginal tax rate, and even talk of a max income, I think it’s important to talk about what happened during the long reign of one of the greatest presidents of all time: FDR.

#IncomeInequality
#ResistanceEducation
FDR’s election happened during the height of the Great Depression, during which labor movements in the US were at an all time high.

This organization amongst labor, coupled with strong socialist and communist parties within the US, led to increased pressure.
This pressure was applied mainly to corporations and politicians of the time, but was also used in small struggles for better working conditions.

It was in these “trial-battles” that groups like the AFL & CIO (modern @AFLCIO) gained strength and skill.

The Spirit Level has been cited ≈10K times (≈700 times in 2018).

The book is straightforward: It uses cross-sectional data to show negative effects of #IncomeInequality on health.

The problem: It does NOT hold up to scrutiny.

🍒 Thread 🍒
#1 🍒-picking.

In the Spirit Level, some countries are excluded from the analysis without justification. When including these countries and using the latest estimates available, the core findings of the book disappear. [2/5]
#2 A second bite at the 🍒

Papers using large survey data with much more countries fail to reproduce the findings. E.g., Jen et al. shows that income inequality actually reduces the chances to report a poor health (especially, in developing countries). [3/5]
