đŸ§” HOCKEY CLUTCH-TIME GOALS (CTG)

GWG👎 CTGđŸ€˜

I've been toying with CTG as a stat for a while

GWG has always been an issue for me. Is 1-0 goal in an 8-0 win truly valuable? I'd prefer better marker of clutch performance

Win/lose, who performed when it mattered most? (contd)
For me CTG is:
- scored in 3rd or OT only
- ties the score, puts team ahead by 1 or 2 (insurance marker)

Can a player score more than one CTG in a game? Why not! If a player puts his team on his back and scores tying goal twice in 3rd and the OT winner, that is super clutch
Can a game have no CTG? Absolutely. Most don't. A 5-1 game decided in the 1st period didn't require anyone at clutch time. No CTGs that game

Simultaneously, in a back & forth game in the 3rd, both teams could have multiple CTGs. Both teams have players stepping up

Messaging from #Leafs brass reeked of a strange self-satisfaction. Here’s guessing former CEO Tim Leiweke would have fired somebody. Only in Toronto does something that ought to be a bare-minimum expectation get a badge of honour. New column from @dfeschuk:thestar.com/sports/leafs/o

More than 8 years after Leiweke hired Brendan Shanahan to great fanfare, Shanahan has yet to win a playoff series. And yet, on Tuesday, the president wasn’t exactly a picture of angst-ridden urgency, refusing to tolerate another in a long line of losses.thestar.com/sports/leafs/o

To the contrary, Shanahan rationalized another playoff defeat while offering strong votes of confidence to GM Kyle Dubas and coach Sheldon Keefe. If you didn’t know any better you could have been convinced the Leafs had just won something, writes @dfeschuk.thestar.com/sports/leafs/o

So #Leafs, #MapleLeafs and #LeafsForever fans, since you’ve had just over 24 hours to fully digest what happened - yet again - to your beloved team, let’s talk about the why, shall we?

Thread time. đŸ§”
So, every year, y’all approach the year that most hockey fans do - “We got a great team, can’t wait for the games to start,” but y’all do it with a Biff Tannen Twist:

Y’all believe that your names are already engraved on the Cup, as does the Toronto Sports Media.
And so y’all go into the regular season with some deluded idea that your best hopes are inevitable and that your crown is just that - yours. And this idea foments, grows, and festers as it is pumped up by Leafs fans and Toronto Sports Media all season long.

OTD in 1959, after taking a shot from Andy Bathgate in the nose, Jacques Plante leaves the game & returns wearing a mask.

This is a (mega) thread to Plante & to the mask wearers who followed. Some great goalies/masks do not appear & some appear more than once.

#halloween2021
Gerry Cheevers and his iconic mask. The first to have markings on it. #NHLBruins
3/many

I considered doing a thread just on Michel Dion's mask.

Just as Shanahan and Dubas keep doubling down the #Leafs are on the correct track — and insist that all these bad playoff experiences will add up to a good one — the Canadiens have only underlined the ridiculousness of this argument.

New from @dfeschuk:

thestar.com/sports/hockey/

Montreal is on the verge of winning a 3rd playoff round this year. It won a round last year. In 4 seasons before that, they made playoffs once. According to Toronto’s front office, Montreal hasn’t lost nearly enough to be winning as much as they are ... thestar.com/sports/hockey/

... Which only makes a further farce of the season-ending press conference performance of Shanahan and Dubas, who tried to minimize their team’s latest faceplant by insisting that the ultimate road to success needs to be paved with repeated failure.

So one of the biggest complaints I've seen from #Flyers fans over their efforts this season, is "they get scored on a lot, right after scoring".

So let's find out if this is true...
#FlyersTalk #AnytimeAnywhere
Through 28 games in 2020-21, the #Flyers have been scored on 18 times within 5 minutes of scoring a goal.
- 12 of those goals against came within 2min of scoring
- 4 of them came within 1min of scoring
- 2 of them came within 30 seconds of scoring
#FlyersTalk #AnytimeAnywhere
How does this compare to the rest of the league?

Most goals conceded within 5 minutes of scoring:
1. #Oilers - 28
2. #Caps - 22
3. #Leafs - 20
4. #Flames - 19
5. #Flyers/#GoldenKnights - 18

and the fewest:

31. #Stars/#Ducks - 4
29. #Sharks - 6
28. #Bruins - 7
27. #Kings - 8

Jack Han, who worked with Sheldon Keefe on the Marlies, believes the #Leafs head coach may be inclined to try a new strategy in the coming season: playing two forwards in front of three defencemen.

His interview with @dfeschuk: torstar.co/3MaX50CetNi
Han points to progressive soccer coaches who realized they were better off putting more players in the middle and the back of the attack to control play. Recently, teams have won without employing a pure striker, or with just one striker in their lineup. thestar.com/sports/leafs/o

You can make the case the inversion of the pyramid has already come to hockey, writes @dfeschuk. When teams talk about maintaining a “high F3” on the forecheck, that’s a formation in which the 3rd forward hangs closer to the blue line, not far from his D. thestar.com/sports/leafs/o

Thinking of the right analogy to explain tonight’s #Leafs game to my American friends: your fav MLB baseball team is in a playoff race playing the team right above them in the standings. They’re out of pitchers in the 5th inning - as a courtesy you lend them your groundskeeper...
...He was a high school relief pitcher back in the day. Now he’s 42 and mows the grass, and throws batting practice when everyone else needs a rest. He starts throwing 70 mph and your team strikes out looking for the next 4 innings...
...Rock bottom for the @MapleLeafs, but also gotta feel good for that groundskeeper. Dave Ayres you’re a legend 👏

The last time a player was suspended for a play against a Maple Leaf was Andrew Ference in the lockout shortened 2012-13 season. Brendan Shanahan was the head of the @NHLPlayerSafety. There has been 225 suspensions in the 7 seasons since. 15 have been Maple Leafs.
The probability that none of the suspensions in the most active year since, Shanahan's last, were against the Leafs is just under 20%. The probability that none in 7 years have been against the #Leafs is 0.5 in 1000. Past 3 seasons under Parros have low Suspensions/GP
There is evidence you can see with your eyes, there is statistical support, there is an undeniable bias in the Department of Player Safety. The Leafs have double the average of suspensions over that time span, but have only had 4 instances of discipline to opposing players.

With the opt in/out date deadline on Jan 18th 4 the @NHL #concussion lawsuit I wanted to revisit this breakdown from @SheillaDingus on the red flags of the settlement:

1/ A potential life & death situation is noted, in which the #NHL says “live or die...

advocacyforfairnessinsports.org/nhl-concussion

we don’t care, just don’t ask us for any money.” Players are instructed to file a claim from the Additional Payment Fund—if they live long enough

2/ The NHL control of testing procedure immediately drew a red flag. It is notable that the cost of testing is NOT included....
in the total value of the settlement but is instead an uncapped fund under COMPLETE control of the NHL

It seems odd that no one to my knowledge has reported this

“In the big picture the cost of these exams is de minimus, particularly when the NHL is in control of these exams”
