🧵It seems many overlook some of the problems and conflict of interest when football clubs transform into state-owned prestige projects, possibly due to their emotional attachment to the sport and specific clubs. Here, I provide three clear examples: #ManCity, #PSG & #NUFC. 1/5

Got to respect @UEFAcom who are, as ever, absolutely committed to making the experience of being a match going fan as miserable as possible even at the @ChampionsLeague final…
2hrs on a bus from town to get to the ground with no water allowed or toilets, fanzone where they stopped serving beers 3 hrs before kick off, and in the ground, 2 stalls for 20k fans to get any food/drink. This is the queue for one of them Image
Oh and I forgot no portaloos/toilets in the fanzone other than some RVs with single loos in them. Good luck if you’re a female fan who’ve spent ages queuing just to use one. Pathetic @UEFAcom

🧵The sponsors of Manchester City

Okay, so I tried to look into some of the sponsors of #ManCity – the state-run project from #AbuDhabi.

It’s long but I hope it is worth it. mancity.com
First and foremost, it is worth mentioning that #ManCity is part of City Football Group (CFG), established in 2013. From 2008-2015, CFG was wholly owned by ADUG, a private investment and development company belonging to Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan. cityfootballgroup.com
Today, CFG is majority owned by Newton Investment and Development LLC, which is owned by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and with a significant minority shareholding held by global technology investment firm, Sliver Lake (18.16%).cityfootballgroup.com

#ManCity won the #PremierLeague. Now aiming for the FA Cup!

Here’s a thread about the club that has won five PL titles in six years - a state-owned project from #AbuDhabi and a club that's charged with 115 instances of rule breaches❗️ Might be worth for the media to tell today❓
I highly recommend @sportingintel’s brilliant recap at #ptg2022 on a decade of #ManCity's skullduggery and succes👇Also @james_corbett, @katpijetlovic. @PhilippeAuclair ends with a shocking view on football and unregulated/illegal sources of financing vimeo.com/721879685

(1/60) As promised, here is a thread on how the Top 6 in the Premier League will be impacted by the new Financial Sustainability Regulation (FSR), expected to have a dramatic impact on the summer transfer window of 2023. #MUFC #LFC #Spurs #ManCity #Arsenal #CFC #FSR
(2/60) Unfortunately, my threads tend to get really long, but the subject is complicated, so you have to bear with me to get through this. First, we will look at the relevant rules of the FSR (i.e. the “new” FFP rules).
(3/60) After that, we will look at the forecast of each Club, starting from the bottom. Lastly, we will cover the quality of each forecast, since that differ due to available information, and I will also add some thoughts on the margins of error.

Nathan Aké: “Pep [Guardiola] is very hard on defenders. We do a few drills in training on defending. He’s not just attacking, attacking, he’s very good with defending. The United game [when #ManCity won 6-3 but conceded three in the second half] he wasn’t happy…”
Nathan Aké: “He’s very specific, knows exactly what he wants. Some take it in quickly, some take a little longer, for me maybe a little longer, but once you get it you get it. He watches [opposition] games over and over and he will see where spaces are, the way we have to play…”
Nathan Aké: “We have our own style, of course, but adjust a little sometimes to the opposition so over the years you start to understand that if we have this game you play like this, for that game you play like that, game by game you start to understand more.” [via @NatSportUAE]

Thread: Eddie Howe penetrates Pep Guardiola's tactical scheme

Each tactical approach has pros and cons when you determine to apply it, a lot of people praised Guardiola's ideas in the build-up phase, especially with the 2-3-5 shape.

Eddie chose to apply high & mid-press and mark the ball-holder and the options for the pass, so Pep lost his progression phase.
Let’s see 👇
-4 vs 4 situation, so Newcastle tried to apply the high press and forced Ederson for the long ball

Analyzing all #BarclaysWSL teams' 1st pass after their kickoffs from 18/19 to 20/21

🔑 Takeaway: Some teams do have different tactics overall &/or for different game states

🧵 is alphabetical, so starting with @ArsenalWFC

Always more long & less accurate passes when losing!
For @AVWFCOfficial there's just the one season.

Ignore winning game states since there were only 2... but they exclusively played very long balls up the pitch when drawing, but were more conservative while losing (with some long balls as well, but not just long passes)

#AVFC
Now @BCFCWomen

Small sample again for winning game states. But they also changed their tactics over these 3 seasons, opting for more long passes across them. But not much of a pattern when breaking down by game state. Usually a lil less accurate when drawing tho

Man City new boy Erling Haaland arrives to the English shores with a burgeoning reputation.

But can he adapt to Pep’s tactics and how will his arrival affect the rest of the City players?

Fantasypaedia contributor @HarshalPatel93 dives deeper in this thread👇

#ManCity #Haaland Image
Haaland has been one of the deadliest strikers in the world for the last few years, outperforming his xG every single season in the Bundesliga with Dortmund, as this image from Understat reflects – Image
Haaland is among the top forwards for most attacking metrics in the last year, as can be seen from the comparison table taken from FBRef.

Note the high number of shots taken p90, as well as touches in the penalty area – he is a high-volume shooter and gets on the end of moves. Image

Aspect Analysis: Guiding the opponent while pressing

- wide areas
- centre
- advantages & disadvantages

#Pressing #Tactics #Liverpool #ManCity

[THREAD] Image
When pressing, most teams try to guide the opponent to a specific area of the pitch to eventually win the ball there and transition to create chances.
Normally, there is a distinction between forcing the opponent building-up through the wide areas or the centre. Both ways have advantages and disadvantages, which I'm going to analyse in this thread.

MANCHESTER CITY VS SPURS TACTICAL ANALYSIS MINI THREAD:
As usual, City dominated and controlled the ball. But conte had a plan that centered around the world class, Harry Kane. This short thread will be going through some key aspects of the match! Enjoy! Image
City lined up in their usual 4-3-3 with the wingers on their natural sides and Bernardo as the false 9. Cancelo on the left to create overloads with Walker staying central.
Spurs lined up in a 5-4-1 which transformed into a 3-4-3 whenever they had possession of the ball. Image
Conte's classic buildup:
Conte went with the buildup structure he used at Chelsea with a 3-2 shape, both wingbacks slightly deeper with an emphasis on baiting the City high press and finding the striker who dropped deep. The overload + movements made it a safe and smart approach. Image

Bernardo Silva's brilliance in every phase of the game in the 21/22 #PL (so far):

[THREAD]
Firstly we'll cover the attacking phase:

Most clinical players in the #PL 21/22 [non-penalty Goals - xG]

🥇 Bernardo Silva - 4.1
🥈 Mohamed Salah - 4.0
🥉 Maxwell Cornet - 3.5

Meaning Bernardo has scored 7 goals from just 2.9 xG, he's been extremely clinical in front of goal.
Bernardo also ranks very high in another measure of clinical shooting, if we look at Goals per Shot Attempted:

🥇 Hwang-Hee Chan - 0.40
🥈 Bernardo Silva - 0.39
🥉 Maxwell Cornet - 0.38

This indicates Bernardo picks his shots wisely and only shoots when in the right positions.

Guardiola ‘They play 5-3-2. When you are in the second part of the build up, the 3 cannot control the width of the pitch’.
How Pep took United apart
1/
Pep gave a little bit of insight into City’s plan after the match on Saturday. Pin their full backs with high wide wingers forcing them into a back 5 and use switches to play in the wide spaces in midfield 2/
The signs were there very early. As City’s build up shifts right, United’s midfield shuttle across. When the ball comes back into Rodri he has Cancelo in space as an option with Wan-Bissaka pre-occupied with Foden (out of shot) ahead of him 3/

City’s left side is the busiest area of any Premier League pitch this season. But is it working? 1/
This season City have focussed more attacks down the left, as opposed to the right or centre, in every single Premier League match. It was the same on Saturday vs Palace 2/
That’s no surprise with Grealish and Cancelo stationed on the left for the vast majority of the season so far. They’re excellent technical players who are likely to attract plenty of ball, especially in comparison to Walker and Jesus down the right flank who are more explosive 3/
