👀💭 This video provides a visual perspective on how difficult it is to move multi-ton blocks of granite, & how difficult moving #megalithic stones with modern technology, let alone many thousands of years ago. The key is alternative & #ancient methodologies. #Archaeology
👀💭 I've always had several issues with the accepted hypothesis of how the #Pyramids of #Giza were built. As a Construction professional specializing in the area of logistical coordination & application of construction methodologies I feel compelled to speak my mind. #Archeology
👀💭 These calculations assume 500 stones a day. This is a rough estimate, assuming a 8-hour day, 290 days a year, with 20 years to build the pyramid. Also assuming that more time had to be used for the huge granite blocks for the King's chamber & upper part of the #pyramid. Image

👀💭 According to recent research, there is evidence of a 4th #Pyramid which was said to be dismantled in 1759, & it took 10 months. This pyramid would have been different from the others, around 100 ft smaller than the others and apparently had a cube on top. #Archaeology #Giza

👀💭 This is the Unfinished Obelisk of Aswan, Egypt stands 137 feet (42m) tall and weighs 1200 tons lies in the ancient quarries near #Aswan, #Egypt. This gigantic piece of rock was intended to be erected as an #obelisk, but for some reason it was left unfinished.
#Archaeology
👀💭 The ⬜️White box shows a crack on the obelisk, 🔵Blue shows the quarrying process around the obelisk, & the 🟥Red/Pink indicates a sculpting technique before the prime finish. I theorize this #obelisk may have been a failed attempt by a #civilization thereafter. #Archaeology
👀💭 The 🔵Blue box shows the same technique pattern used to sand down & sculpt the #obelisk, while the ⚪️White box highlights a slightly different technique than the blue, you just have to close closely. The ↪️arrow indicates the difference in finished from the near by surface.

Time for Part 5. Part 4 is here: and talk a bit more about time, life and death in #Neolithic #Malta - the link between above & below is more than just location.
So, there was a time in the 1970s in #archaeology when we tried to make sense of things by testing hypotheses. Not a bad idea, but it doesn't always work & here's why (aside the fact that humans don't behave in a linear, ordered way).
Colin Renfrew decided to map locations of #megalithic sites & figure out land & territory. Sounds logical right? Especially back then. But the research question itself isn't divorced from our context in the present. To Renfrew it made sense that...

Antirhodos was an island in the eastern harbor of Alexandria, #Egypt, on which a Ptolemaic palace was sited. The island was occupied until the reigns of Septimius Severus & Caracalla & it probably sank in the 4th century, when it succumbed to earthquakes & a tsunami #Archaeology ImageImageImage
There was said to be an earthquake in the eastern Mediterranean near Crete in the year 365. The site now lies underwater, near the seafront of modern Alexandria, at a depth of approximately five metres (16 ft). ImageImageImage
The jewel of the island is, of course, Cleopatra’s now-underwater palace which lies submerged five meters or 16 feet underwater. It is only ironic that, like the site itself, Cleopatra’s final resting place is waiting to be discovered. ImageImageImage

#PrehistoryOfPenwith: A Thread

The end of #Cornwall where I live, #Penwith, is incredibly rich in prehistory.

I know very little about our standing stones/circles and fogous so this thread's here for me to learn a bit more and share my photos.

Please contribute!

I'll start things off with Tregeseal East Stone Circle ('The Dancing Stones'). 19 stones, once part of a system of 2 or even 3 circles.

Under Carn Kenidjack 'The Hooting Cairn' with Tregeseal Holed Stones nearby. A fantastic place.

Boskednan Circle ('The Nine Maidens')

19 stones, possibly part of the Carn Galver processional route.

Sometimes overlooked due to being near the more famous Mên-an-Tol but one of my favourites. An hour here at dusk, alone, is really very special.
