🧵 On 28 March, the European Parliament will vote on key files of the EU #MigrationPact. The unofficial agreements between parties that we’ve seen can be summed up in: more detention, quicker deportations. A little thread to understand what this would mean 👇 EU Migration Pact: European Parliament votes on Migration Pa
Children above 12 could be detained at borders in some circumstances. Despite the internationally recognised definition of children being every person until the age of 18, the compromises would validate a new line in the middle of adolescence.
People would be automatically detained while waiting for their deportation, if they were already detained in asylum border procedures or if they try to avoid deportation.

🔴I think people in Greek reception facilities face serious mental health issues, and as my colleague has mentioned correctly Mr @MargSchinas in Lesbos we have 50 cases of self-harmed or suicidal children.>>>

The EU #MigrationPact reinforces a narrative focused on exclusion and security at any cost.
It fails to address the impact of structural #racism and how it plays out in practices & policies that put people’s lives at risk. Is this really ‘solidarity’?
An anti-racism THREAD 👇🏿👇🏿
2/ EU migration policies are historically based on racial discrimination and shaped by a neo-colonial approach.
This needs to be addressed, such as the notion of who belongs to Europe and the criminalisation of moving, which disproportionately impacts racialised groups.
3/ The pact does not acknowledge anti-migrant and xenophobic political discourse in many countries, and the impact it has on policy design and practices.
The pact essentially gives a free hand to these countries to detain and return migrants

1/ #MigrationPact and #RuleofLaw: a thread

Member states hostile to #RuleofLaw and to EU values, are also those most hostile to migrants & refugees.

This is neither a surprise nor a concidence.

2/ With "return sponsorship" 🇪🇺#MigrationPact envisages countries 'hostile to migrants' would be tasked with detention and deportation.

This is worrying on a number of levels.

ec.europa.eu/info/strategy/…
3/ Essentially, the EU's "dirty work" of detention and returns will be farmed out to member states where the EU has *serious concerns* regarding judicial independence, freedom of expression, corruption, rights of minorities, and the situation of migrants and refugees.

From what I can tell so far, the vaguely newish ideas in the #MigrationPact presented today are products of the same wishful thinking that created hellholes like Moria.
It is wrong to think that chance of drowning at sea, or prospect of detention upon arrival, or possibility of quick deportation will deter people from trying to reach Europe. People take dangerous, risky migration journeys because they have to, not on a lark.
The #MigrationPact proposes pre-screening and then accelerated border procedures for people coming from certain countries. These kinds of procedures are usually unfair and rarely that quick. Think #Moria

1/10 What will the long-awaited EU #MigrationPact presented today (audiovisual.ec.europa.eu/en/ebs/1/20200…) mean for EU external #migration governance and the #EU’s partnership with African countries? Here are some of my takeaways....
#MigrationEU
2/10 First, no surprises. The pact outlines mostly a continuation of existing approaches concerning partner countries.
Yet, with
2. A stronger focus on migration diplomacy to increase returns (and making use of enriched tools: finances, visa policy, a new EU coordinator)
3/10 Elements of the ‘external dimension’ of the pact were already agreed early on as they are far less controversial among EU member states, However, the pact links return to internal solidarity putting pressure on EU member states to convince partner countries to cooperate.

🟢 What is the State of the European Union #SOTEU debate? It's an important moment of #EU #democracy, when MEPs hold the @EU_Commission to account, checking on work done & the #FutureofEurope.
