Nuclear power has a unique opportunity to stage a comeback amid the global energy crisis, soaring fossil fuel prices, energy security challenges & increased climate ambitions

But whether this happens will depend on governments & industry

New from @IEA ⬇️ iea.li/3ywoMzt
A nuclear power comeback is far from guaranteed

In advanced economies that see a role for nuclear, governments need to enact policies to kick-start investment

And the nuclear industry has to overcome recent cost overruns & delays to deliver new projects on time & on budget
In @IEA’s #NetZero2050Roadmap, global nuclear power capacity doubles by mid-century in a system dominated by renewables

To fulfil this role, nuclear's costs in advanced economies must come down by 40% and world nuclear investment triple by 2030

Wondering what is the role of hydrogen in our new @IEA #NetZero2050Roadmap? Here I’ll try to summarise the key findings and some critical #milestones that we should achieve in the way towards Net Zero 🧵. More details 👉 iea.org/reports/net-ze… (1/7)
Today, global H2 demand is around 90 Mt. This demand should expand to 200+ Mt in 2030 and 500+ Mt in 2050. Most of this demand comes from new uses in heavy transport, production of H2-derived fuels (for shipping and aviation), industry or flexible power generation (2/7)
H2 and H2-derived fuels should meet 13% of total final energy use, becoming major fuels in sectors where today they play a negligible/none role. H2 and NH3 could meet 60%+ of energy demand in shipping and synthetic fuels could meet 1/3 of energy demand in aviation (3/7)

Our new report shows global energy investment is set to rebound nearly 10% in 2021 to $1.9 trillion, reversing most of last year's drop

But the amount going to clean energy technologies is not nearly enough to put us on a path to net zero by 2050

Renewables are dominating investment in new electricity generation & are expected to account for 70% of the global total this year.

However, far more is needed – our #NetZero2050Roadmap calls for investment in clean energy to triple by 2030.

Spending by some global oil & gas companies appears to be starting to diversify.

@IEA analysis last year showed only around 1% of the industry's investment went to clean energy. Recent trends suggest this may rise to 4% in 2021 – and well above 10% for some European companies.

Behaviour changes play a small but essential role in our new @IEA #NetZero2050Roadmap. Some may seem radical - and give only small cuts to emissions- but they're critical where other decarbonisation options are scarce. Here I'll unpack what they entail & why they're important...
The #NetZero2050Roadmap involves a series of targeted behaviour changes (key ones below). Many of these changes generate co-benefits such as cleaner air; all are feasible with the right policies (and in some countries are starting to happen).
Behavioural changes cut emissions in hard-to-abate sectors such as aviation, and also cut fuel demand, putting less pressure on bioenergy, and electricity from renewables. Reducing waste and improving design of buildings helps reduce materials demand in industry.

*Great NEWS*
Today @IEA published its #NetZero2050Roadmap-a scenario that brings global CO2 emissions down to #NetZero by 2050.

This is the first time IEA presents a detailed picture of how the global economy can be transformed in line with 1.5C (1/n)

iea.org/reports/net-ze…
A detailed look at the report shows that @IEA has done a thorough job.

Modelling choices underpinning the pathway are well argued, reliance on speculative technologies is limited, and the carbon budget is in line with the most ambitious pathways available in the literature (2/n)
In addition, the report also presents a unique collaboration between two of the core flagship teams of @IEA: The World Energy Outlook and the Energy Technology Perspectives.

This in itself presents an exciting development.

Congrats, @Laura_Cozzi_, @TimurGuel and team (3/n)

The @IEA just released the world’s first comprehensive roadmap for the global energy sector to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

Our special report shows the pathway to net zero by 2050 is narrow but still achievable if governments act now.

The report ➡️ iea.li/33PDCAD
The @IEA pathway leads to a global energy system in 2050 dominated by clean energy:

➡️ Solar is the single largest source of global energy
➡️ Renewables provide almost 90% of electricity
➡️ One-fifth of that electricity is used to produce hydrogen

More: iea.li/3orMJRu
Our net zero pathway sees a historic surge in clean energy investment to $4 trillion in 2030. This creates millions of jobs & helps lift global economic growth by 0.4 percentage points a year in the 2020s.

The pathway has no need for investment in new fossil fuel supply projects
