"Midas Touch is a cautionary tale."

I want to make this very clear: If I ever find out who that Product Manager was, or their venmo/kofi/whatever, I will personally buy them a drink. Or cheese.

You are my kind of person, and I appreciate you. #Twitter #LoveWhereYouWorked Image

🧵To every ex-Twitter employee I can reach:
Severance packages are coming. Do not click or accept ANYTHING in that package w/o speaking to an attorney first. I was part of the 11/4 layoffs, this is far less than what was promised in writing repeatedly in the acquisition. (1/6)
YOU deserve to know what ALL of your options are. Whether we worked together, or I was just a name to you in a company repository, or we’ve never met before, I want whatever is best for you. It doesn't matter what attorney you choose or consult with, nor is it my business- (2/6)
- but I’m putting this out there too: there are more than 3,500 of us ex-Tweeps laid off. You are in good company. There are so so many of us who have been diligently supporting each other throughout all of this and researching our legal rights since November. (3/6)

Congratulations to #Indonesia on successfully hosting the #G20 meeting in Bali this week. I hope the world knows Indonesia a little better now. However, just in case – here’s a thread...

There’s a lot more to Indonesia than Bali. 1/25
On Monday President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and First Lady Iriana Jokowi hosted a spectacular gala dinner for leaders of the #G20. 2/25

If like me your invitation went missing in the post. Don’t worry you can watch it all here: bit.ly/3GsDtrx
Indonesia is the 15th biggest country in the world covering a total area of approximately 1,904,569 km2. Argentina is the 8th covering 2,780,400Km2. Russia is by far the biggest covering 17,098,242 km2. From east to west Indonesia stretches over 5,000 kilometres. 3/22

You know…

This was the first role where I felt empowered as a BLACK Woman Engineering LEADER.

And it was fuckin great.
I loved this place.
I loved this job.
I will always LOVE this team.
Twitter was a dream job for me.
It was a job I almost didn’t apply for because I thought it was out of reach.
“Whose going to push code for the Black Woman whose never worked in tech as big as THIS before?”

1/ Over this past weekend, I made the tough decision to resign from Twitter. Originally, my last day was going to be Nov. 25, but now it’s today. So I’m going to share w. all of you what I shared w. the remaining teams at Twitter earlier this week. A love letter:
2/
Eleven years ago, I was debating between two jobs — one that was an obvious progression of title and money, the other was Twitter, a far riskier proposition.
3/I took the job at Twitter because I thought I would get better stories out of the experience.

I was right. 😂

And how do you propose to accomplish such a task, now that you've fired the *checks notes* Ethics, Transparency, & Accountability team
Is anybody making a list of all the Twitter teams that just got fired, by the way? It's gotta be hilarious.
An incomplete list of #TwitterLayoffs teams that @elonmusk realized he doesn't need because they're just glorified censors:

Curation
ML Ethics, Transparency, and Accountability
Human Rights
Climate
Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility

Others?

Yesterday was my last day at Twitter: the entire Human Rights team has been cut from the company.

I am enormously proud of the work we did to implement the UN Guiding Principles on Business & Human Rights, to protect those at-risk in global conflicts & crises including Ethiopia,
Afghanistan, and Ukraine, and to defend the needs of those particularly at risk of human rights abuse by virtue of their social media presence, such as journalists & human rights defenders.
I will forever be grateful for the privilege of getting to work with @cynthiamw @heysarah & @EstherOhrt on the Human Rights team, along with so many other brilliant, mission-driven individuals across the company.

Twitter temporarily closed its offices after telling employees they will be informed by email later in the day whether they are being laid off reut.rs/3sZ55N1 1/5
The move follows a week of uncertainty about the company's future under new owner Elon Musk.

The social media company said in an email to staff it would tell them by 9 a.m. Pacific time on Friday (12 p.m. EDT/1600 GMT) about staff cuts 2/5
'In an effort to place Twitter on a healthy path, we will go through the difficult process of reducing our global workforce on Friday,' said the email sent, seen by @Reuters 3/5

Saw this tweet from @SBkcrn, who was the person who was developing the Twitter Communities feature.

EM has layed off 7,500 employees today. (Source: amp.theguardian.com/technology/202…)

It’s speculated that 50% of all employees would be laid off.

But that’s not even the worst part…
This tweet had gained a bit of traction, some people were sympathetic with Simon that this has happened (and especially in this way) and the BILE that others quote tweeted Simon’s tweet with is horrendous.

Guess any sort of human interaction has just gone out the window then?
But if there’s one thing that @SBkcrn has done is create and develop a wonderful feature for Twitter for its diverse communities to interact with one another.

And for that I’m grateful to him for allowing me access to the feature and create the Genealogy Twitter community.

This seems like a fine time to look back on the rather decent API platform our team built at Twitter.
THE YEAR IS 2017. Building new features for the bird app means exposing new data over Twitter’s APIs. This involves coordinating changes across many services and many teams, because microservices.
Flash forward to 2022. Over 5 years, we’ve migrated almost every api used by the Twitter app into a unified graphql interface. Getting api changes into production used to be measured in weeks, now it's measured in hours.

When your team is pushing round the clock to make deadlines sometimes you #SleepWhereYouWork
Since some people are losing their minds I'll explain: doing hard things requires sacrifice (time, energy, etc). I have teammates around the world who are putting in the effort to bring something new to life so it's important to me to show up for them & keep the team unblocked.
I work with amazingly talented & ambitious people here at Twitter and this is not a normal moment in time. We are less than 1wk into a massive business & cultural transition. People are giving it their all across all functions: product, design, eng, legal, finance, marketing, etc

Today @twitter is opening our offices in SF and NYC. Our hearts go out to any tweeps around the world still unable to come back to an office, but this is a long awaited day for many.
It’s going to be different, both near term with COVID-protocols, and long term. We aren’t asking everyone to return. Ever. We will attract and retain the best people, enabling the most creative and productive work of their careers, whether on their sofa or in an office.
We will create new norms. Some of us are nervous extroverts or live in tight quarters without good focus space. Others will feel unshackled from meetings, urban areas, face time, or a century’s office norms, free to avoid a commute, small talk, or even traditional hours.

REAL TALK Y’ALL ... I’M SO PROUD OF THIS.

a 🧵 on how our NFT activation came to life … and the creativity & dedication we all put in to make it happen.

It started as a wild idea and turned into a truly XFN project.

The NFT convo is HUGE on Twitter -- I’m talking over 29M Tweets about NFTs this year alone 🤯

So, yes, there are tons of Tweets about NFTs… and even NFTs of Tweets. But let’s be honest, figuring out how to buy Ethereum, pick an NFT to bid on, and then actually win one? Daunting process.

"The pager went off. I immediately answered. It was a voice I recognised, of my intern, but this time it was different. They sounded concerned. They sounded scared. 1/n"
"Hello" I replied "It's Jamal the Medical SHO, how can I make your day better?"

Silence.

Did I intimidate them with mentioning my lofty title? Potentially. I awaited the response.

"OK... It's Adam, the F1 covering the elderly wards, sorry to bother you but..."

I stopped them there.
I couldn't hear another word after that phrase was said.

"Sorry to bother you."

Official guidance from #ESPEN about nutritional management of #COVIDー19 clinicalnutritionjournal.com/article/S0261-…
A useful summary of nutrition/malnutrition, immune function and critical care.
But in reality, #ICU is different... FWIW a personal interpretation of limited experience thus far..
Assume every patient with #COVID19 is at high risk of malnutrition, whether co-morbidities exist, or not. Difficulties in breathing (DIB) compromises oral intake whether or not non-invasive ventilation (NIV) is used. Plus patients are being admitted well along the disease pathway
Use a feed protocol where possible. Most #ICU have one. Ours follows a 4-hourly escalation in NG feed rate tempered for patients on high level vasopressors. Protocols inform unfamiliar staff with normal ICU practices when ventilated numbers escalate.

A few weeks ago I noticed that one of the on-call doctors didn't seem quite himself.

We're not friends outside of work + I'm not his supervisor, but he works in an acute specialty so is regularly in the ED seeing patients + that day something just wasn't quite right.
(1/3)
I asked him if he was ok and he replied, "Yes, I'm fine", but I wasn't convinced.

Later on I spoke to him again - I said that I had noticed a change and was worried about him.

This time he told me everything... things he hadn't told his colleagues, his friends or his GP.
(2/3)
Reframing the question really changed the response I got and we then spoke about what had been happening, how he was feeling + how it was affecting him and his work.

Together we were able to make a plan to help him move forward.

Innovation isn’t just a buzzword, it is hacking the establishment. Few things are as rooted as gov’t, making hacking that much harder. Innovation in gov’t looks like failing (small) a whole lot in between successes. Unfortunately you aren’t allowed to fail in gov’t. @GavinNewsom
2/ If the Office of Digital Innovation is to have a chance at being successful then it has to hack the gov’t ecosystem. The legislative process, budget, oversight, but mostly the culture of bureaucracy that rewards the status quo. @pahlkadot
I had the privilege of leading one of California’s early digital service initiatives. We failed a lot. I failed a lot. But with many supportive partners we made major strides in procurement, open source, educating, agile, workspace, cloud native, and so many more. @CA_CWDS

You go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice about engineering. What is it?🤔 I’m putting this question to @Twitter engineers from around the world who are in San Francisco for #oneteam this week. Here’s what they have to say👇
“Take advantage of learning everything that comes your way because eventually it all connects. Even things that might seem left field like laser beams - we use lasers to make servers talk to each other - it all ends up being applicable.“- @lhi, mission critical engineering, SF
“Don’t doubt yourself so much. The whole imposter syndrome thing is real, and it’s hard to get past. But everyone is faking it to an extent. And don’t be afraid to ask what you might think are stupid tech questions.” -@lee_eisenhardt, site ops technician, Atlanta data centre
