If you support #OpenDnD so that third party publishers have a right to flourish with the OGL and create D&D products, and are choosing to boycott sales on @dms_guild to do that, you need to touch some grass.

Here's some things you should know.
First, a few facts:

1. DMsGuild is not owned or run by Hasbro

2. Wizards of the Coast gets 20% of the revenue off each sale at DMsGuild (not 50%)

3. OneBookShelf gets 30% of the revenue off each sale

4. The DMsGuild CCA locks your content there, you can't move content off it
For every dollar you don't spend at DMsGuild, you're taking $0.20 away from WotC, $0.30 away from OBS, and $0.50 away from one of the Creators who are the folks you are fighting right alongside against the OGL.

And $0.50 means a lot more to those Creators than $0.20 does to WotC

Here is everything shared to me over the last two weeks from @Wizards employees.

The video description explains how I verified these employees identities, and collected the information.

From now on, I'm passing everything to @lincodega 🧵

I'd like to ask that you remember there are two sides to every story.

Yes, some of the accounts from employees paint an extremely serious picture of the situation at Wizards.

This is their side of the story. Remember there is another side before you judge anyone. #BeKindAlways
Finally, I'd like finish with some positive quotes from the WotC employees I spoke with.

It's tough out there, but there are good people all around us, even if they must stay silent. We aren't alone.

Thanks for your kindness to me. I'm very happy to be done with this #OpenDnD

Wizards of the Coast is doing everything in its power to turn the camera away from itself in this moment. At its heart, this is nothing more than classic corporate greed corrupting a beautiful game enjoyed by millions of players.

Under the OGL 2.0, it STILL:
- Renders Kickstarters unfeasible - If Wizards had to pay 20% of their revenue, they'd be bankrupt
- Is not an Open license by definition, open means open
- Forces creators into a one-sided contract to continue making content they've made for years
- Claims that large companies are the reason for these changes, despite the fact that no company has taken money, or even threatened to remotely overshadow them, by using D&D's Open Content—NOT their protected IP. Even Pathfinder is miniscule compared to the scale of WotC.

Whelp, looks like I got my hands on a OGL 2.0 Faq that was leaked. (they're rebranding from away from 1.1 apparently)
#dnd #OpenDnD #dndogl FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE NEW OPEN GAME LICENSE (
in it it appears they're trying to set up some changes and clarifications.

Right off the bay, it looks like they are planning to release the OGL v5.2 on Monday Jan 16th (which include more species and the artificer)
the big question that was released on everyone's mind,
What about products already released under OGL 1.0?
Good news is that they will stay licensed under OGL 1.0 forever.

WotC's move to end #OpenDnD has created an uproar among fans, and a lot of people are blaming the corporate suits at Hasbro. Here are some thoughts from a former corporate suit, and how I'd try to use business arguments to convince other execs not to "de-authorize" the OGL. 1/🧵 #OpenDND logo, but it's on fire
And to be clear, I never worked at Hasbro. But I did work for three of their key competitors: Mattel, Spin Master, and Moose Toys. In fact, my last big career choice was whether to become the President of @bwisegames or pursue a VP-level position at Hasbro. 2/🧵
I'd start by pointing out what's obvious to fans: that making D&D "open source" took it from around 50% market share in the year 2000 to 85% in 2022. In a highly fragmented market, the #OGL incentivized potential competitors to play *with* D&D rather than against Wizards. 3/🧵

KH: So we have lost the support of the youtubers?
WC: Aye, m'lord. But it is of no matter.
KH: True. We will create more content than they could ever dream. They will return for scraps
KH: The kickstarter leyline is bound to us?
WC: Not without effort, m'lord, but it is done. Wrapped in deep magics, it will facilitate your plans whether it likes them or not.
(a banging noise is heard)
KH: What manner of racket-
(guards open the doors to find a sheaf of open indie system announcements hammered to the door)
WC: Wha...what hubris
KH: Do these fools not realize that I have decreed that we OWN them?!

So what are we doing re #opendnd? Still having crisis meetings but our thoughts are along the lines of (a) de-OGL-ifying Level Up and movingto a true open license; would need work but luckily we didn't use SRD text we wrote our own (b) investing more in WOIN our in-house system.
De-OGL-fying #levelup5e is a chore, but doable; it's more a layout challenge as renamed elements would need moving alphabetically.
WOIN is easy. We'll do a new starter set and we'll adopt a new license to share it.

Frustrated for a non-medical reason! 😲

The leaked #OGL update (1.1) from WoTC looks to do some real damage to the #DnD community. It's going to deter independent content creators: threatening royalties and ability to claim this content as WoTC/Hasbro.
It looks to replace OGL 1.0, so even content out there now could be affected.

@Wizards_DnD @Hasbro - seriously reconsider this. DnD has had the biggest resurgence because of these content creators that you're after. Think!
First starts off with books, campaigns and other content. Next it will be online tools. It will close the community right down!

Full support behind #OpenDnD project. Strongly considering cancelled #DnDBeyond sub! Don't want to know anymore about #OneDnD until this is sorted!

One thing WotC is likely missing with the new OGL 1.1:

Tightly restricting the 3pp market for D&D is going to cause a huge drain of the talent pool for D&D writers, including the ones that WotC hires, which will directly harm WotC's ability to produce content.

I'm not an RPG product creator, so my understanding is limited to what people have told me about their own experiences.

I'm sure I have some of this wrong, so if you know better, please correct me.
My understanding is that it's a hard career, and people who do this full time are mostly freelancers. Most of the work is contracts, and you need to both work multiple contracts and constantly seek out your next projects. You see the same names in credits in a lot of projects.

WOTC's NDAs expired Jan. 4, when the new " #OGL " was supposed to drop. #wotc is wavering and might be in negotiations with larger 3rd parties to make separate licenses, to legally bind them before dropping new language. Let's put CR and other creators on BLAST to announce (1/3)
they will NOT make any agreement with WOTC before the language affecting the majority of third parties drops. #2: After the final language is out and if it is predatory, these creators should NOT make a separate peace w WOTC: this concedes the principle that one doesn't (2/3)
need to submit to WOTC's terms to publish compatible content. It leaves littler guys out to dry. #OpenDnD (3/3)

Let's talk about the math of the OGL 1.1's royalty system, because it's really bad.

TL;DR: Unless your profit margins are ABOVE 25%, you are incentivized to stop earning revenue at 750k.

#OpenDnD #DnD
From Linda Codega's article on Gizmodo:
"The revenue You make from Your Licensed Works in excess of $750,000 in a single calendar year is considered "Qualifying Revenue" and You are responsible for paying Us 20% or 25% of that Qualifying Revenue."
I'll use the 25% number. Let's assume that you're an establish publisher not actively running a Kickstarter. Maybe you KS'ed products last year and they're still selling. We don't know the exact wording yet, but even if we use the 20% number it just shifts things down a bit.

If the leaked material sent to @TheRulesLawyer1 is accurate, then WOTC is intent on destroying both the #OSR and #Pathfinder. If you care about #OpenDnD watch his video and get ready to get angry.
The terms themselves are as pernicious as you can imagine, demanding you sign over a license to all of your IP irrevocably while allowing them to terminate your license virtually at will.
But, what's worse, the leaked language suggests that they intend to revoke the existing OGL by asserting that OGL 1.0 is no longer an authorized license. Can they do that? Lawyers differ in their opinion.

Wizards has released its statement on the future of the Open Game License for D&D and it's a doozy. #OpenDnD? No, not at all.
dndbeyond.com/posts/1410-ogl…
The key changes are as follows:
1) Videos and video games are no longer covered under the OGL. In theory, WOTC is asserting that its copyright can block Actual Plays of its games, just as Nintendo has asserted. That's a big deal. It also puts at risk a lot of indie games.
2) The OGL will no longer actually an open license for commercial purposes. It will now require that you report revenues to WOTC! And you have to pay royalties on revenues above $750,000. The amount of royalties isn't stated.

The latest updates from WotC regarding V1.1 of the OGL are not an #OpenDnD

At best, they are the open door of a rabbit trap.

The current OGL grants a "perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free, nonexclusive license". V1.1, as outlined in today's article, will not. 🧵1/5 Image
The article says creators will have to do the following to use OGL 1.1

-Accept the license terms and let us know what you’re offering for sale
-Report OGL-related revenue annually (if you make more than $50,000 in a year)
-Include a Creator Product badge on your work

2/5
The fact that creators will have to report their creations to WotC and use their special badge is a big red flag in terms of an *OPEN* gaming license.

And that reporting of $50k+ revenue; that's a bad sign of things to come. 3/5

#OpenDnD

Headline info for those making paid content using the future OGL.

- Accept the license terms and let us know what you’re offering for sale
- Report OGL-related revenue annually (if you make more than $50,000 in a year)
- Include a Creator Product badge on your work
Companies making over $750k on OGL products will have to pay a royalty from 2024 on revenue over that 750 mark.

I think the requirement to report OGL-related revenue is 100% a precursor to making money off smaller folks in the future too.
Reading over this I do not feel better about the situation at all.

#OneDnD is being advertised as an evolution, a backwards compatible growth from 5e. I think as we move forward that will be less and less true.
