Thread-I've asked the pain community to write letters to the @WhiteHouse ATTN: @FLOTUS or @Potus.
This is my own letter already sent re: how MY family's been impacted.
Now an #OpenLetter.
It will take all of us writing for #PainAwarenessMonth to make an impression.

I'm so proud of this gorgeous, inspiring, short film. In honor of #PainAwarenessMonth do yourself a BIG favor and take a few min this morning to watch. @BostonChildrens @takecareus @TheComfAbility #PainCounts

@TheComfAbility made this in collaboration with the @takecareus, a non-profit healthcare initiative that pairs award-winning filmmakers with healthcare leaders to flip the script on how we talk about health. @maydayfund @US_ASP @US_Pain #ChronicPain #chronicillness #Pediatrics
Why did I do it? Most people don't realize that pain is both a physical and emotional experience. That's why #CBT is such an important part of treatment. We need to spread the word because #MentalHealthMatters

I developed Adhesive Arachnoiditis during the course of two spinal surgeries & six failed epidural steroid injections. I went from being at the peak of my career to spending nearly every waking moment on my daybed in my family room overnight. #RealPainStory #PainAwarenessMonth 1/
2/ My daughters lost the active Mom who attended every school performance and recital, that one took them for hikes & travelled to a number of locations every year. Without treatment, I couldn’t take them shopping, go to the movies or even stand long enough to braid their hair.
3/ Without treatment, my husband lost his active wife, his date to countless funerals, weddings & family functions. Instead of taking care of my aging Mom & cooking her meals, she stepped in to play chauffeur & drive me to my appts. I had to use a scooter on good days to shop.

1-Thread.
Grievance letter in thread, written in 2014.
Prior to CDC guidelines.
I was dismissed out of hand, told I was 'free to find another healthcare provider'.
Since then, things have gotten far more deadly for people in pain...

To Whom It May Concern:
Let me begin by saying that I feel that my doctor has abandoned me. Kaiser Permanente has made me sign a pain contract under extreme duress and I feel, at the very least, that my patient rights have been violated; if not my civil rights.
3-This letter is being written in hopes of revising a system that I feel discriminates, marginalizes, and has the potential to alienate and cause more harm than good in regard to patients seeking relief from chronic pain.

My daughter has been having some pretty bad pain days. She has struggled with sleep more then usual. Tonight she came & laid by me in my bed. Sheer exhaustion took over. She is ‘sleeping’ but it’s not restful. She is whimpering and moaning in her sleep. This is 1/
a reality of pain. Yes she benefits from opioids but she also uses other techniques; distraction, stretches, hot baths. The reality for many is that even when you employ distraction, mindfulness, as well as other modalities it is NOT enough. This is the last day 2.
of #PainAwarenessMonth and I go out with a heavy heart. There is still such harm occurring, such stigmatization, inability to access quality care. There is an effort to silence those that have benefited from LTOT by labeling and providing a DSM diagnosis. To those 3/

My kids have #hereditarypancreatitis. The pancreas can weak havoc on ones body; nausea, malabsorption, vitamin deficiency and #pain; horrible pain. The option we were given was 2 remove #pancreas, spleen, half the stomach & other ‘parts’ to 1/ Image
ensure that there 75% of developing #pancreascancer did not occur & that it would address their pain. It did not. They both came out with multiple complications. While this transplant CAN produce good outcomes there are a number, such as my kids left with #pain 2/
and multiple life issues. Many have been abandoned by the hospital that did the transplant & are having to navigate the system to figure out care. When you have no #pancreas, no spleen, only half a stomach constant #pain, malabsorption & an entire host of issues 3/ Image

#Pain impacts all areas of ones lives. It’s difficult to address. The current climate around those with #chronicpain is full of stigma & biases. The narrative that #opioids are bad & do not assist those w #pain or that there are a plethora of non-opioid 1/
continues to impact those that have #chronicpain negatively. IF you have #chronicpain you are acutely aware that care for those in #pain is poor in the USA. There may be ‘pockets’ where one can access superb care but I believe it is few & far between. We did NOT need the #CDC 2/
guidelines. They were Honecker by an ‘expert’ group whose sole focus was on #SUD NOT the treatment of pain. I believe they took the guidelines and encouraged the misapplication of these guidelines. Instead work should have been done to focus on better treatment options 4 those 3/

This makes me so furious. I don’t know what has to be said to make individuals aware that #opioid #pain meds benefit many. I don’t ever condone violence, ever, yet try to put yourself in inds shoes who have benefitted from #opioids & their QoL has improved. Many of these 1/
Individuals have had medications ripped away due to #CDC, #PROP, the misapplication of #CDC guidelines, anti opioid advocates (that advocate for OTHER opioids). Let’s have a balanced approach. Peoples lives have been harmed. Not just theirs but their families 2/
This is #PainAwarenessMonth & it’s been a struggle seeing so many who do not and will not understand the experience of many with #chronicpain. For those throwing around ‘there are many non opioid options’ no, there are not & most of the time those on opioids have already tried 3/

The number of #patients with #chronicpain being harmed due to false narratives re #opioid #pain medication continues even while #CDC revisiting guidelines as they know it has been misapplied & manipulated by anti opioid entities 1/
Untreated #pain does harm in so many ways. Imagine a mother having to beg for her child not to have to lie withering in a hospital bed in pain due to #hereditarypancreatitis. Being told to have her daughter use #GuidedImagery to address the horrible pain. This is criminal 2/ Image
Imagine having your children begging to just die due to pain. This has been common for many kids w #pancreatitis due to lack of addressing their #pain. #EssentialOils, #GuidedImagery, #Accupuncture will NOT work in the middle of a flare. It is criminal that this still occurs 3/

#PainAwarenessMonth This is NOT acceptable but I continue to hear from parents on a regular basis the lack of care of pain. Untreated, unaddressed pain will cause life long issues. This must be addressed. @aander1987 @speakingabtpain @BethDarnall @tal7291 @LelenaPeacock 1/
