“Who is this guy again?”

Journalists Julie Brown and Emily Michot were in a restaurant in St. Thomas, waiting for a source who called himself Chef James.

His emails suggested he knew a lot about Jeffrey Epstein.

But Emily was getting nervous. 🧵 trib.al/G0YMB2F
Chef James had told Julie, for example, that while Epstein was on work release at the Palm Beach County jail in 2008, he spent over $100,000 in catering bills for his “office.”

A lot of that food went to deputies who were making upwards of $42 an hour monitoring him. Image
That night, as they were waiting, Brown was texting with Lauren Book, a Florida state senator and child abuse survivor who had become involved in pushing for a probe into whether there was any wrongdoing on the part of the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office in connection with Epstein. Image

an old saw from Mike Parson’s campaign:
random rural yard signs to

In this specimen Parson would take in

Yet the venue’s the same:
still in Macon. Why no

BREAKING: Judge in Jeffrey Epstein who has refused to release grand jury records has ties to those with a stake in keeping them secret. #perversionofjustice miamiherald.com/news/state/flo…
The judge's daughter works for Palm Beach State Attorney Dave Aronberg, her son works for Sheriff Ric Bradshaw and she herself worked for ex-state attorney Barry Krischer, who did not want to charge Epstein with child-sex offenses.
In addition, the judge has bowed under political pressure before: She backed out of running for state attorney in 2012 after she was warned by Aronberg's political operatives that several lawyers were preparing to file an ethics complaint against her.

NEW: by New York Times @nyt -- A child victim's abuse by an acclaimed writer leads to criminal probe & fuels debate over a culture in France that allowed (and even celebrated) men who have sex with children. nyti.ms/2FsPJYg #jeffreyepstein #perversionofjustice
@NYT This story explains a lot about how and why #jeffreyepstein was allowed to abuse children in France. It was so accepted, apparently, that one of his friends sent him two 12-year-old girls to have sex with as a birthday present!!
@NYT from the NYT: "The former host of France’s most famous literary television program struggled to explain why he and other guests...laughed...at Mr. Matzneff’s preferences for minors...a few [people]still came to his defense, including the former book editor of Le Monde."

1/ It's been a year since we published part one of our #PerversionofJustice investigation into Jeffrey Epstein and his victims.

A lot's happened in that year.

Today, we launched a mini-doc that walks you through how we did it.

miamiherald.com/news/local/art…
2/ Our reporting exposed a decades-long injustice suffered by dozens — and perhaps hundreds — of young girls.

When Epstein was found dead in his jail cell in August, it seemed like an unfair end for the victims who hoped for justice.

miamiherald.com/news/local/art…
3/ But the story didn't end just because Epstein had died.

This has been a long saga with many moving parts.

That's why we compiled every piece of our investigation into one place, so you can see the clear timeline of his rise and fall for yourself.

There he was. Jeffrey Epstein appeared to have hanged himself while he was alone in a Manhattan jail cell.

The multimillionaire was dead, a seemingly unfair end for the victims who were hoping for justice.

How did we get here? (THREAD) #PerversionofJustice

Several of them have grappled with trauma, depression and addiction. Some have served time in prison. hrld.us/2M9Pjdh #PerversionofJustice

ABC was not the only media outlet that quashed the Epstein story. There were many others, as NPR's @DavidFolkenflik reported months ago. thedailybeast.com/amy-robach-abc… via @thedailybeast
@davidfolkenflik @thedailybeast One of the reasons I had trouble getting sources to cooperate with me on this story is that so many news outlets had bailed on the story that they were tired of talking to reporters who didn't do anything with it. I had to convince them that the Herald WAS going to print it.
@davidfolkenflik @thedailybeast My editor @caseyfrank1 had to assure one of the key sources in my series, who had never spoken publicly, that we were NOT going to be intimidated by the Alan Dershowitz's and Prince Andrews' and other powerful people connected to the story. #PerversionofJustice #localjournalism

The medical examiner stands by that ruling.
