I’ve had a few people ask, so here is my 🧵 on things that I did this last year to stay focused on my writing output and quality.
Note, I’m still a rookie at this and by no means a professional, but if even one person gets something good out of this I’ll call it a win. 1/10
The biggest thing for me with writing has been making time. I work full-time outside the home, travel a lot for my job, and have a 3yo, so finding time I was willing to sacrifice for this was key.
What gets scheduled gets done, and for me that means 10pm-midnight, M-F. 2/10
I’m a creature of habit, so I make sure everything is as predictable as possible when I sit down to write.
Mute phone, tell my SO that I’m writing and not to disturb me, I even go so far as to play the same exact music each time I write (also works as an informal timer) 3/10

For the last #PitMad, I downloaded and analyzed all of the pitches to see what works and what doesn't. 🤓

In this thread, I'll recap a lot of what I learned, so you can keep it in mind for Thursday.

Everything I'll provide will be backed up with hard data. 👍

PitMad is VERY popular. No Agent can comb through every pitch. Instead they monitor tags.

So...USE TAGS!!

Some tags are in more demand than others. Use these threads to help you identify what tags to use.

Age Tag Thread: (don't use NA)

Here's a thread on Genre Tags:

Certain genres like Fantasy are extremely hot right now, but the market is crowded, so it makes it harder to get an agent like.

Other Genres have fewer agents but authors have a better chance of getting likes.

How to find literary agents to query (a string):
I was just talking about this in my writing group and thought I'd share with the #writingcommunity #amquerying #amwriting #amediting crowd:
1. Search Twitter for #mswl + (something in your book/comp)
ex: #mswl ya soulmates
2. Search manuscriptwishlist.com for facets of your book, but also comps, including movies, TV shows, and bestsellers you would comp your book to if they weren't so famous (your query comps should be recent, but use the others to find agents!)
3. Get a PublishersMarketplace ($25/m) subscription, then:
-go to the top dealmakers in your genre (agents & agencies) & check out their sites to see if they're a good fit
-If you find an editor who might be a good fit (on MSWL), look up who's selling to that editor.

You know what, a question for all of the aspiring authors out there.

Do you know how to get traditionally published? Do you know what a literary agent is? A query letter?

I ask because I get so many messages from people who don't seem to know these things.
There is so much mystery when it comes to publishing. People genuinely don't know how it works and don't know that it's more accessible than it seems.
Should I do a thread? Well, looks like I'm already doing a thread. Fellow published authors, feel free to chime in.

Alright. You have an idea for a book. You think it's pretty good. Step 1 is the most important: Write the dang book.

Don't just think about it. Write it.

Okay, you asked for it.

I am about to tell you my theory, which is so controversial and yet so obviously based in fact, that it's validity cannot easily be disputed.

And yet, because it is about a beloved subject, it will anger many. I suggest everyone mute me, really.

Last chance.

Okay, here it goes.

It's about Ariel and Prince Eric.

The fourth panel I attended at #ConZealand this year was “What to Expect When You’re Ready to Query”, with @Ellethevillain, @CaseyLucasQuaid, and @englishmace, moderated by @MorganHzlwood.

The panelists shared some useful tips and information about querying.
This thread will include many of the things the panelists said. I’m copying this over from my handwritten notes, so assume I’ve paraphrased unless I put something in quotes.
First, @MorganHzlwood began with some definitions:

Querying is when you send your work to an agent.
Sumission is when you send your work to a publisher.

This panel focuses on querying.

Let's talk about pitchwars babe.

It's about time. (1/X)
I love my PitchWars sibs! They're a great community. I love my mentor (and if Pintip is still the mentee liaison, she was great too!). I love what I learned about my craft going forward after doing PitchWars. It's an OVERALL positive experience. The good is better than the bad.
When you join PitchWars, do it for the stronger manuscript, for the exposure, and for the community. HOWEVER. This is not a GUARANTEED experience of PitchWars.
