What I find as interesting about this chart as its contents is the label at the top: "#LIBERAL WOMEN"

Labour may in part* be more 'liberal' than the current Conservative party, but it is not a Liberal party...

__
*It still has its more authoritarian, "law'n'order!" tendencies. Image
...indeed, the chart itself 👇 suggests that "the women of Wakefield" support the Liberal Democrats LESS than the men.

This rather American(?) conflation of "left" and "liberal" in both language and assumption is a form of #CategoryError - in large part due to the insistence... Image
...on the all-too #binary 'left/right' framing that fails to encompass many nuances within politics.

That UK-level choices prefer only two 'parties of Government' does not entirely reflect either sentiment or ground reality, as the local government layer in England indicates... Image

I'm so sick of complaining, but no solving. I don't care if you're conservative or socialist, democrat or republican, white supremacist or human rights activist, green or purple, I just want solutions that work. #Nolabels #ProblemSolvers #Civility #Pragmatism #RadicalCentrism
Let's begin by solving Climate Change with #ClimateSavingAccounts. #CSA's give preferential capital gains tax treatment to green energy companies, thus spurning investment in renewable sources. Soon, there will be so much investment that the Earth's climate will change back.
Everything can be a Savings Account. We've seen #CSA's and of course #HealthSavingsAccounts (via @RealisticDemoc1). We could create #HIPAASA, which would incentivize HIPAA compliance through preferential tax treatment for investing in compliant companies. Same for Infrastructure.

On the 68th anniversary of #JohnDewey's death, here's a nice read about the pragmatist's legacy. Among other ways, Dewey's thought was influential internationally through his students, #Ambedkar and #HuShih #pragmatism #jaibhim @saap @DeweySociety neh.gov/article/john-d…
#Ambedkar took inspiration from Dewey, and others, and created a unique version of non-foundationalist #pragmatism in India, one that used #equality, #liberty, and #fraternity as ends-in-view or ideals. He also owned more books by or about Dewey than any other contemporary author
If you're interested in the relationship between #Dewey and #Ambedkar, here's a place to start. My research and conclusions have grown since this post, but it's a helpful beginning. #jaibhim forwardpress.in/2017/05/john-d…

“Violence,” you say, “is the last refuge of the incompetent.”
I can only agree. It’s a great saying. Whose is it?
“Isaac Asimov, I think. I’m not sure.”
The science fiction writer?
“Yes.”
I love the guy. He said a lot of great stuff. Have spacesuit. Will travel.

“No, that was Heinlein.”
Ah. Right-wing libertarian Heinlein. I loved a lot of his stuff, too. Starship Troopers. Stranger In A Strange Land. Shame he was a right-wing libertarian.

“He was probably ok with violence, too.”
Shifting back to the topic of violence….
“Shall we?”
Why not? I agree with you.
“With me or Isaac Asimov?”
Either. Both.

Alongside the #ExeterTehranConvos I’m been thinking about the nature of philosophy and research in #Iran within the context of the reception of #European philosophy - thread on #philosophy in #Iran 1/ Image
And the ways in which continental philosophy dominated in an earlier period due to the influence of the #Heideggerians and the circle of #AhmadFardid (1909-1994) many of whom became prominent in the committee for the cultural revolution after 1979 2/ Image
But since then - and it seems perhaps a bit of a surprise that #Soroush was a major figure in the support of #analytic_philosophy then - #Anglophone philosophy is gaining an upper hand 3/ Image

My first encounter with the #Persian #Wittgenstein (1889-1951) in Iran was buying a copy of a translation of #PhilosophicalInvestigations at the Tehran book fair in 1999 - a thread on Wittgenstein in Iran 1/
This translation by Ferydoun Fatemi (d. 2008), a well-known translator of philosophical works with Nashr-e markaz seems to be based on the English 2/
Standard accounts of Wittgenstein do not tend to look at his reception beyond the English speaking context - but for that there are two two excellent introductions which partly problematise the 'early' vs 'late' and SEP entry plato.stanford.edu/entries/wittge… 3/
