Today is the last day of #BlackHistoryMonth.

#FortBendCounty #Texas is home to a breadth of important Black history—and underrecognized history-makers.

Today, I rise to recognize #BenjaminFranklinWilliams, one of Fort Bend's first Black civic leaders.

(thread) Portrait of State Represent...
Williams (1819–1886) was born into slavery. As part of the slave trade, he was repeatedly uprooted and relocated across the southern United States, until reaching the Texas gulf coast region in 1859.
Here, Williams became involved in politics and quickly ascended as a formidable political leader – not just for his community, but for the entire state.

He served as vice-president of the Loyal Union League, a pro-Lincoln organization that mobilized Blacks and Unionists.

Let's end #PresidentsDay weekend with a few fun facts about the Chester Arthur presidency, because there's very little known about it and very little records survive. Which was by old Chet's design. His nickname, seriously, is The Dude President. And he was very Dudeish!
Chet Arthur, as he went by, was probably our first President who never actually wanted to be President. He was an old school "machine" politician from New York, part of the powerful Conkling faction of the Republican Party (which remember, was the anti slavery party then).
But as James Garfield secured the nomination for President, the infighting in the party after the graft filled Grant and Hayes presidencies threatened to tear it apart enough to cost them the election. The first couple of VP choices turned down the offer thinking they'd lose.

Herbert Hoover is a highly underrated president. The Great Depression started on his watch, and yes, he should have handled the situation better. But both before and after his presidency, he was among the great humanitarians in US history, and his work is worth knowing about. 🧵
2/ When World War I broke out in 1914, Hoover was in London, where he had been living for the last twelve years. Concerned for the nearly 100,000 American citizens trapped in Europe, he and some other American businessmen established a committee,
3/ which he chaired and which distributed aid to tens of thousands of people.

Then came the German invasion of Belgium. Germany mandated that the occupied Belgians could only import food and other needed supplies under the supervision of the neutral United States.

DANGER ZONE: President Biden visited Kyiv along with two trusted journalists to document his ‘brave’ 10-hour train ride to visit Zelenskyy. Did the White House warn Putin that the president was visiting the war zone?

Ukraine vowed to drive US tanks all the way to Moscow's Red Square as Biden visits Kyiv. Did the White House warn Putin or roll the dice that Biden wouldn’t accidentally be killed. What if Russia had killed him? Would the US been forced to join the war?

If Russian missiles had killed President Biden (not realizing @POTUS was there) would the United States been obligated to join Ukraine’s war in the air and ground? Would we have fired an ICBM at Moscow?

1/ At this point Republicans are so far outside of the boundaries of actually supporting the United States of America they would cheer Putin on if he invaded Alaska just to make Biden look bad..
2/ so now .. as Russia invades Ukraine.. Republicans at every level of our government and our military are rooting for the guy who is invading our allied nation.
3/ It’s no accident that Trump and tried to coordinate the launch of his social media app with Putin’s invasion of Ukraine on President’s Day. It was a calculated and planned aggression.

Henry Brown of Springfield, Illinois, is best known to history as the Black man who led Lincoln's horse on the day of Lincoln's funeral. But Henry Brown was much more than that.... #presidentsday @CCP_org @ALPLM @illinoisIHLC @HopeCM @NWIHistorian @nu_hgso #BHM
Born in North Carolina in 1823, Brown left home as a young person and migrated to Ohio and Ind. before settling in Ill. He and Mary Ann King fell in love in 1847. "A mutual admiration and a matrimonial engagement was the result of their first meeting," a county history recorded.
An A.M.E. minister, Henry Brown presided over a church in Springfield but frequently traveled to other churches. He and Mary Ann had ten children together. Brown served as a delegate to the first statewide Black political convention: Chicago, Oct. 1853. coloredconventions.org/black-illinois…

Donald Trump is the most corrupt President in modern US history. But Trump didn’t cause the rot in Washington – he’s just the biggest, stinkiest example of a system that no longer works for the people. That’s why this #PresidentsDay, I’m fighting for my bill to #EndCorruptionNow.
Presidents shouldn’t be able to own companies or hotels on the side & use their office to make a fortune. My bill to #EndCorruptionNow would require the President to place his/her assets, including businesses & commercial real estate, into a blind trust to be sold off.
My #EndCorruptionNow bill would make sure all govt employees – including unpaid White House staff, even family-member advisors to the President – are forced to comply with govt ethics & conflict of interest rules.

On #PresidentsDay, let’s celebrate presidents who made historic appointments in #JudicialDiversity:

Truman appointed first Black federal judge—William Hastie;

Kennedy appointed Thurgood Marshall to 2nd Circuit;

Johnson appointed first Black woman judge—Constance Baker Motley;
Carter appointed most Black circuit court judges in one term;

Clinton desegregated last all-white circuit court in nation by appointing Roger Gregory to 4th Circuit;

Obama appointed more Black women judges than any other president.

Lots more history to make for next president.
Have to mention the current president is making history in the reverse on #JudicialDiversity. He STILL has not appointed ONE Black circuit court judge despite 51 appointments to circuit court bench.

Each #PresidentsDay I write a column about a 19th-century president most Americans never learn about in school. This year's topic: Zachary Taylor, a war-hero-turned-president. His death just 16 months into his term may have made the Civil War inevitable.

For #PresidentsDay 2019, I wrote about Benjamin Harrison.
He had perhaps the noblest political lineage in US history and was a highly gifted speaker. Yet in person he was highly off-putting — even supporters called him "the human iceberg."

In 2018 I described Chester Arthur, a hack who was named vice president to balance the ticket — only to become president when James Garfield was murdered. Amazingly, Arthur became a genuine reformer, turning against the spoils system he had long embraced.

Ya'at'eeh my relatives. Today is #PresidentsDay and one of the Presidents our nation loves to honor is Abraham Lincoln. He is the president who freed the slaves and whose legacy is forever tied to the amendment that abolished slavery...
Thread 1/3
But the 13th Amendment includes a clause that keeps slavery legal in prison. Also the hanging of the Dakota 38, the Massacre at Sand Creek and the Long Walk all took place between 1862 and 1865, under the Lincoln administration.

Today (#PresidentsDay2020) at 3 PM EST / 12 PM PST my campaign is hosting a live stream and I will provide an in-depth look at “The Legacy of Abraham Lincoln.”

Andrew Jackson was a wealthy slave-owning mastermind of Indigenous genocide. An undeniably terrible person. Yet Seattle still has a major thoroughfare named after him and it’s time for that to change. A #PresidentsDay thread and call to action.
In case there’s any doubt in your minds, here’s a quick (and not at all comprehensive) lesson on Why Andrew Jackson was Bad.
As a seasoned general he invaded Spanish Florida to chase down fugitive slaves and terrorize Indigenous peoples, sparking the first Seminole war. “His actions were a study in flagrant disobedience, gross inequality and premeditated ruthlessness,” writes Bertram Wyatt-Brown.

Me: Many of these past presidents (and now a current one) were racist as hell.

Them: They were simply men of their time. Most [white] people thought like that then.

Me: But my ancestors then were just as human as I am now. WTH are you saying?!

#PresidentsDay
I forthright admit that I can’t get over the fact that slavery existed in this country, and my ancestors were subjected to it. The fact enraged me. I may well never get over it. And, I’m ok with that.
Read or listen to the Slave Narratives one time, and it makes you insane with anger. At least it does for me as a black man in this country. I am left with the question: How could they? The answer always come back to this: Evil.
