Another thing I have been thinking about a lot lately is how *expensive* it is for #Quakers to have volunteers do everything.

Taking into account all of the time, effort, and having to fix things that volunteers do badly, it would be *so much cheaper* to just pay a professional.
And that's not even factoring in everything we lose by having terrible outward-facing media (websites, social media, you name it).

This volunteer shabby-chic is not a good look, Friends!
Do #Quakers actually want young people to come to meeting? This is not the way to do it!

Friends love to point to things like @QuakerSpeak. Guess what? That was funded!

A thread on why #Quakers need to pay speakers for their Yearly Meetings.
For perspective: My current rate for a weekend event is $5,000. That is actually very low for professional speakers.

Quakers want all of this work for free or $200 (an actual amount a YM offered me).
You know who we get when we don't pay speakers, #Quakers?

Amateurs, zealots, and advertisers (people who work for a Quaker org that is underwriting the cost).

#Quakers, we're getting close to Yearly Meeting time! It has come to my attention that some YMs do not pay honoraria for speakers.

That's a problem! Here are some things to consider when setting your honoraria for YM speakers:
First, travel, registration, and room and board at the session are a cost for the yearly meeting, but they are not a benefit for the speaker.
If the YM wants someone to come in person for the annual session, this is the minimum the yearly meeting has to pay to make that possible. But going to the YM is not a benefit for the speaker. That is a working trip, and the travel and time there are all part of the work...

The police interrupted a @BritishQuakers Meeting for Worship yesterday then made 50+ arrests.

I want to tell you the story.

First off, it was big. Very big. Outside of a Yearly Meeting, I have never in 33 years of being a Quaker seen a Meeting this big.
@BritishQuakers It was in the road outside of the world's largest arms fair.

@Quakers_RoR organised it to disrupt the setup of the arms fair. Together we had blocked the East Gate since 7.15am.

It was publically advertised as from 2-2.45pm. Here is where I was sitting.
@BritishQuakers @Quakers_RoR At about 2.30ish the police "interrupted our quiet time" to tell us if we did not leave the road by 3pm we would be arrested.

Here is my view of an officer doing so.
