Lee Saunders: People don't want us to understand our history or the importance of our history. To get to where you want to go, you have to understand where you've come from.
@AFSCME
Lee Saunders: The history of civil rights is so important. The "I Am" story goes back to 1968 when sanitation workers weren't treated well despite providing a necessary service to the people of Memphis. (con't)
@AFSCME
Lee Saunders: (con't) The city blocked sanitation workers' efforts to organize. Things came to a breaking point when two sanitation workers were crushed in the back of the truck when the crusher malfunctioned & crashed down on them, killing them. (con't)

The Railway Safety Act of 2023 is a good start but isn't enough. It would increase the fine the federal gov't can put on railroads from $225,000 to 1% of annual operating income, which could be tens of millions of dollars.

Detection devices when there's hazmat on the train checks for things like heat every ten miles. The train that derailed in East Palestine? The detection devices were checked either every 20 miles...or not at all. (con't)

(con't) Even when these detection device sensors go off & all the machinery is warning of danger, there's someone off-track in a booth saying, "Aw, don't worry about it."

Randi Weingarten: The President of the US of America spelled out an economic strategy that would help virtually everyone, & he talked to people who'd lost their jobs to outsourcing.
@rweingarten @AFTunion #InnovationFund
Randi Weingarten: Sarah Huckabee Sanders said she's anti-woke. She wants to defund public education; she doesn't want public schools to be the center of the community.
@rweingarten @AFTunion #InnovationFund
Randi Weingarten: Our polling shows 80% of people want to strengthen our public schools. That is not in line with the very wealthy who want to defund, undermine, & destabilize public education.

Scott Paul: We've seen 800,000 new manufacturing jobs in 2 years. All of these factories are just getting on line & will be filling up over the next couple of years.

Scott Paul: I think some of these infrastructure items are bulletproof. Also, Pres. Biden did get the GOP to agree not to cut Medicare & Social Security, which is a big feat.

Rick: Pres. Biden's speech should be called The Hardhat Speech. Put down the blue hat, the red hat, & put on the hard hat.

81% of teachers say they've given out toothbrushes & toothpaste to students.
Teachers seem to be the ones at the bottom of the hill catching all the sh*t that rolls downhill. (con't)
#RickShow
(con't) For years teachers have told me they keep food in their desks for kids who are hungry. This comes out of their pockets, & Repubs accuse them of being groomers.
#RickShow
One teacher told me she buys one bag of groceries for herself & one bag for her students so she can send a few cans of food home with them on the weekend. This isn't usurping parents, it's helping parents who are struggling.

Bob Ney: I don't think Marjorie Taylor Greene or Gosar will go to a martyr status. Of all the people who could be removed from a committee, there'd be more outrage over Schiff than Omar.
@bobney
Bob Ney: I didn't think it was a good idea when the Dems didn't, it wasn't a good idea when the Repubs did it, & now they've both done it. MTG said some outrageous, obnoxious things, & Omar said some things I don't really care for. It's precedence-setting on both sides.
@bobney
Bob Ney: I read the articles about the giant balloon over the US; I am in favor of shooting it down, especially if it goes over an uninhabited piece of land.
Rick: My first thought was to shoot it down but it could become a ramp-up moment if they shoot down one of ours.

Emily Andrews: The Family Medical Leave Act is an incredibly important piece of legislation. It's not just the pay, FMLA is flawed--the size of the employer, how long you've worked there, how much you make all affects your ability to take unpaid leave.
@emilymandrews @CLASP_DC
Emily Andrews: There are a number of bills to increase the number of people who can qualify for FMLA. The biggest obstacle to FMLA? People can't afford to take 12 weeks of unpaid leave.

Matías Vernengo: The Fed may say they want a soft landing & not cause a recession, but it looks bad on the Fed if they appear to be weak on inflation. I think Repubs want chaos.
@NakedKeynes @BucknellU
Matías Vernengo: If the Fed didn't already cause a recession, housing prices may throw us in a recession. If we dodge that bullet, then I think Repubs will want to throw us in a recession & it would be political.
@NakedKeynes @BucknellU
Rick: I think some members of Congress are like the kids you tell not to touch the hot stove--they have to touch it to see what happens. They may have to learn the hard way what happens if they don't raise the debt ceiling.

We're basically hamstringing the medical profession with the laws being passed regarding abortions. Doctors are having to play defense. We have the highest infant mortality rate & the highest maternal mortality rate,& now we're tying doctors' hands in caring for women.
#RickShow
If abortions are allowed only in the cases of incest or rape, we're forcing women to be liars, to make false accusations, & then to be criminals, simply so they can have control over their bodies.
#RickShow
In TN, they're proposing an exception for rape. A woman who's raped has to report it, either to the police or to a rape crisis center, which then must report it to the police. (con't)

Rick: Nikki Haley announced that on Feb 15 she'll announce she's running for Pres. The pie fight begins.
Doug Jones: I think a lot of Repub Pres. wannabes see Trump as a wounded animal. I think "pie fight" is being a little too gracious, Rick!
@DougJones
Doug Jones: Nikki Haley started out wanting to do her best for the people of SC but then became too entrenched in the Trump organization. She's trying to outdo DeSantis.
@DougJones
Doug Jones: This primary will be about division, about whipping up a base. Every candidate will talk about unifying the country but when you strip away those sound bites, you'll see culture wars coming out of nearly every GOP candidate.

Will Bunch: My friend joked that Biden's Stovetroopers are coming for your gas stoves. The idea that the gov't can weigh in on anything that affects public health... First they came for our guns, now they're coming for our grills.
@Will_Bunch
Will Bunch: Lots of politicians lie abt their education, but Santos went further by saying he was a star volleyball player in college. His mother died 2x, once on 9/11 and again in 2016. He's a compulsive liar. The fact he's been in Congress a week is just appalling.
@Will_Bunch
Rick: Who ran against George Santos? Why didn't they discover these lies? It was nice the NYT came out with the article but it would have been more helpful BEFORE the election!

Jason Davis: A strike is always the last course of action we want to take. We're on day 165 of the Ingredion strike. I'm so proud of Local 100G in Cedar Rapids, IA; we have NO ONE who has crossed the picket line, despite it being hard on members & families
@BCTGM #IngredionStrike
Jason Davis: We've had toy drives & food drives; we still have a small number of donations coming in to help striking workers put food on the table. The strike was especially hard over the holidays.
@BCTGM #IngredionStrike
Rick: This is a wildly profitable corporation: The CEO pocketed over $10 million, or 449 times what the workers on the picket line are making. It's not that the company doesn't have the money, they just don't want to share it with the workers.

Scott Paul: The focus of the new select committee on China, chaired by Rep. Mike Gallagher, is important. I hope this committee is taken seriously & makes recommendations to other committees.
@ScottPaulAAM @KeepitMadeinUSA
Scott Paul: Up until now, we haven't seen a lot of action congressionally on China. To Biden's credit, instead of reverting to traditional Dem. policies on China, he doubled down on some of the things Trump did.
@ScottPaulAAM @KeepitMadeinUSA

Caller Andrew, Detroit: I truly believe we need to tax the very wealthy in this country but be careful of taxing corporations--won't they just push the increased taxes onto consumers?

#RickShow
Caller Andrew, Detroit: What about windfall profit taxes on these companies?

Mike Lux: We've actually got a president who cares about manufacturing & wants to see us creating more jobs. We've barely scratched the surface but we're already seeing results.
@ProgressiveLux
Mike Lux: We need to start making things again like they do in Germany--very high wage economy. You can have a high wage economy that still makes things.
@ProgressiveLux
Rick: One thing we've learned during the pandemic: in times of need, you produce what you need domestically. We didn't have that capability because our production was done overseas. Manufacturing is a national security issue, esp. w/ high-tech items.

@sallyahardin @AMProg @CAPaction
Sally Hardin: EVs are still expensive because there aren't a whole lot of them avail. yet in the U.S. There are extra incentives for EVs built in the US by US workers, which is a win-win-win situation.

Renato Mariotti: There's no way to overstate how big a deal it was for the FBI to raid a former President's house.
@renato_mariotti
Renato Mariotti: If I wanted to raid a house, I'd have to show proof that a crime was committed & that evidence about that crime was in that house. We'd have to put together an affidavit & a judge would have to agree that evidence was at that house.
@renato_mariotti
Renato Mariotti: Senior DOJ leadership & probably the AG himself would have had to approve the FBI raid. It's tough to get a judge to sign this thing, & I don't think anyone would accuse the AG of being a wild & crazy guy, & he agreed to sign this.
