1. This is a really useful case study in the use of Rules of Engagement (RoE). I always use ‘graduated and proportionate’ as the core foundation to any engagement of law enforcement or military, in a contact situation. 2/
2. The conduct of this officer was laudable. She shouted many commands to subject to drop the knife. She was graduated w/ her response both in the raising of her voice, and final action.
3. Only when the individual decided to run at her w/ a knife (subject basically upped the threat level which placed the officer’s life in danger) did she use the appropriate force to neutralise the threat - the use of lethal force was appropriate as the situation escalated.
