The world celebrated the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 3rd December, 2022. The @UN recognises Disability inclusion as an essential condition to upholding human rights, sustainable development, and peace and security. @dfcugroup @UNAPD
They further assert that Disability inclusion is central to the promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to leave no one behind. The commitment to realizing the rights of PWDs is not only a matter of justice; it is an investment in a common future. @dfcugroup
12.5% or roughly 6m Ugandans are PWDs. 5% of adult PWDs find it difficult to walk. 36% of the PWD population face multiple difficulties that may include walking. It is predicted that PWDs will significantly increase across all domains and age groups by 2050. @dfcugroup @NUDIPU

This🧵is about a tricky problem in education

The problem: despite growing global wealth and technological progress, there are extremely poor parts of the world where most children grow up illiterate and innumerate

We have two new papers showing that this can be changed

1/n
Here are the papers, one in the Journal of Development Economics
(sciencedirect.com/science/articl…)

and one in the Journal of Public Economics (sciencedirect.com/science/articl…)

Our tl;dr message:

2/n
The problem: most prior research finds that the best we could hope for from educational interventions in these places is small to medium learning gains

We show: with the right inputs, we can achieve much larger learning gains in these places than previously thought possible

Our mission at the Kids Being Kids Foundation is to improve the welfare and #development of the most #vulnerablechildren through play and extra-curricular activities.
A part of this is their physical #environment, which studies have shown profoundly influences developmental outcomes including academic achievement, cognitive, social and emotional #development.
One of the #vulnerable groups we want to support are the #Children of the Wesley School for the #hearingimpaired in Surulere. Their #landscaping is in dire need of a facelift.

The FG has an "Economic Advisory Council" with seasoned Economists - what do our States have?

The development of Nigeria cannot be achieved alone by the FG.

We need State Govts
We need Local Govts
We need Private partnerships
We need NGOs/CSOs
We need FBOs
We need You
Some States don't even have Executive Councils, the Governors are in charge with unilateral decision power.

If State Governors don't get Governance right, the little the FG is doing will never be enough for most Nigerians to feel good governance.
The FG budgets for Basic Education from its Revenue share....2% of whatever the FG makes goes to UBEC to be shared among all States + FCT.

Unfortunately, these monies are not fully accessed by many States.

Does your State care enough to allocate first line charge to Education?

The month of September is the Deaf Awareness month. This week Monday,we witnessed the Sign language day where hundreds of people showed up to create awareness and bring out the challenges faced by this group, with special focus on access to QUALITY EDUCATION,here is a thread.#SDG4
Children who are deaf are faced by myriad of challenges. Besides the general challenges faced by PWDs,the advocacy has focused so much on delivering wheelchairs forgetting the deaf often. Here is a list of challenges faced by the deaf backed up by data. @KTNKenya @citizentvkenya
Deaf are often assumed to be dumb/mentally handicapped and people treat them like children. This has not only led to self esteem issues but also mental health challenges because they keep feeling left out and misunderstood.
