I look forward to working alongside @GFColeman and Senator Whitmire to add very necessary reforms to the #SandraBlandAct next legislative session. These provisions, which would have held police accountable, were removed from the original bill. (Thread)

“After Whitmire removed much of the language related to police encounters... the bill passed both chambers. The version of the Sandra Bland Act signed into law by Gov. Greg Abbott had become mostly a mental health and jail reform bill, and it lost support from Bland’s family.”
Now is the time to revisit this Act, & honor #SandraBland’s life by adding these measures to hold police accountable:
- implicit bias & racial profiling training
- banning choke holds
- increasing stop & search standards
- limiting arrests for Class C misdemeanors
