Together we can interrupt the school-to-prison pipeline.

During #OpenSchoolRISE we are examining how racism shows up in the education system and how we can build a better way together.

One of the biggest ways race impacts our students is through discipline and the school-to-prison pipeline. So what is the school-to-prison pipeline?

September 1, 2020, will be day 3 trail against special education student - @UplandUnifiedSD using taxpayer dollar intended for education students, paying a private law firm with our taxpayer dollars to fight not support a young girl with reading disability.
We are passionate about exposing the use of private law firms in Special Education at Districts like @UplandUnifiedSD (CA) and @TVUSD (CA).

Stop the #schooltoprisonpipeline. The lawyers at the private law firms approved by Board Member at @UplandUnifiedSD and @TVUSD
are taking an advantage of an opportunity to earn income from students with dyslexia and other disabilities.

The only people who win are the primarily white lawyers in law firms throughout CA who profit from students with disabilities.

Gun violence, a THREAD

1/ For over a decade, I’ve been a staunch police reformer and advocate for gun safety legislation in Seattle and beyond. Portraying gun violence as an issue caused by the existence of #CHOP distracts us from discussing the root causes of gun violence.
2/ This is an epidemic w/devastating impacts on Black/Brown people in every major city, including Seattle.

Tragically, we lost another life to gun violence over the weekend with another young victim critically injured. My heart hurts for the victims, their families + friends.
3/ I disagree with any attempt to politicize these shootings and use them as a justification for @SeattlePD to move back into the East Precinct after SPD made the choice to leave the building.

What are some important events to include?
Great resources I'm already working with include the #WeCameToLearn report from @adv_project

Thread on local #racist violence & what we do now:
Recently a white male school teacher abused an 11 year old black girl student, ripping out her braids. This occurred in #MadisonWI.

I am out of town & unable to attend the community meeting about it today, but the anti-black violence & hatred in Madison is increasingly palpable to me, as someone who has lived there less than 2 years.
@AboutFreedomInc has been fighting to get cops out of schools for over a year now. Their youth squad attends every school board meeting to share stories & ask @MMSDschools to invest in youth of color & youth with disabilities not police.
