A note: everything about last night, from the unreasonable amount of cops responding to the "de-escalation" language used on the scanner indicate to me that SPD was very focused on how they APPEARED last night. Keep that in mind.
Also note that this is LAST NIGHT, starting 8:18pm September 8th.

I also appolgize for the massive amounts of tweets that are about to flood your feed, bare with me.

Is it just us or is the Court Monitor much more interested in throwing money at SPD and blocking the #DefundSPD movement than ensuring accountability for police brutality? #SeattleProtests
Nearly a decade in, Seattle's federal Consent Decree is starting to feel hopelessly off the rails, with the federal oversight just another part of the institution shielding SPD from deeper accountability. #SeattleProtests #DefundSPD theurbanist.org/2020/09/14/cou…
Monitor Antonio Oftelie's questions seem to betray no awareness that this crisis could be of SPD's own making. Afterall, the police guild president sees this an all out culture war. #FascistCoup #DefundSPD theurbanist.org/2021/01/12/bes…

I'm hearing from 2 secondary sources (1 who works at Gov. Inslee's office, and another familiar in communication with SPD) that the sweep of the houseless community at Cal Anderson will not happen today, but tomorrow, Thursday Dec. 17 at 730 a.m. #Seattle #CalAndersonPark
Some SPD vehicles are circling the park right now
Lots more vehicles at North Cal Anderson passing through #seattle #seattleprotests

NEW: A federal judge has found #Seattle in contempt of court for @SeattlePD violations of his injunction on the use of crowd control weapons during #seattleprotests
full order: documentcloud.adobe.com/link/track?uri… @KIRORadio
This is in the lawsuit filed by @ACLU_WA @BLMSeattleKC early this Summer and comes after the two sides had come to an agreement on policy for crowd control weapons use following an initial contempt motion filed in July.
In his ruling on this second contempt motion, Judge Jones found several incidents that did not violate his order and others that were inconclusive.

@SeattlePD viciously attacks a group of non violent protesters over "property damage" aka painting their likely illegal wall. SPD severely injures one protester and leaves them laying in the street for over 10 minutes without medical attention.
#seattleprotests #seattleprotest
I'm hearing the victim is in critical condition. SPDs violence is disgusting and inexcusable, no one was being harmed until SPD showed up. Fuck @SeattlePD. You can see 5 cops pile on the unresponsive victim right after they attack

Someone carried off on a stretcher in #Seattle. Some pushing rumors that he's been killed

No stretcher, misread that bit.
Despite the rumors appears to be just a medical evaluation

This is reporter Casey Martin @caseyworks out following a Black Lives Matter/ Seattle Evening March through South Lake Union. Speakers at Cascade Park, where march began, said they're just as dissatisfied with a Biden win as they'd be if Trump is re-elected.
"Shut it down," the crowd chants as we near the intersection of Fairview and Denny Way.
Another large group joins this march to big applause. A couple hundred people now heading north on Westlake. I've seen maybe 2 bike police. #seattleprotests

50 protestors who participated in BLM demonstrations—incl. family members of Summer Taylor—filed a major lawsuit against the City of Seattle & State of WA wrongful death, personal injuries, & civil rights violations by Seattle police.

southseattleemerald.com/2020/09/26/50-…
"Protesters suffered...injuries from chemical agents, blast balls, flash bangs, batons, and rubber and plastic bullets. These weapons caused deep bruising and scarring, permanent hearing loss, bleeding, brain injuries and burns from chemical agents."
Police used "militarized tactics" against protesters during arrest and in custody, causing multiple neck, wrist, & "knee injuries, bone contusions, muscle injuries, damaged fingers, damaged hearing, bleeding in the ears, amputation of a thumb, and cardiac arrest."

The police at the #seattleprotests just ran over an injured mans head with their bikes. @SeattlePD is this how you train your officers?

**Just full transparency: The man wasn’t injured. That was my interpretation when I was watching the live stream, but it wasn’t accurate. That doesn’t take away from what the officer did. This is unacceptable in any circumstance**

Good afternoon! It is the one and only #AceReporting!

My, we've come a long way from the end of May, huh?

Today's special meeting of the Seattle City Council is all about whether or not they will sustain the mayor's veto of the revised 2020 Budget.

#SeattleProtests
As always, tips are appreciated! (particularly as I am still waiting for more work and close to E on my bank accts)

I'm predicting roughly an hour of testimony, if not longer. Then will will have discussion before deliberation on the three bills the mayor vetoed. If these three are not sustained, we will then have a final vote on a compromise bill. More details here:

1/ @CMLGonzalez pledging to divest from police & invest in community

“I think it’s important for me as an elected official, as an elected official who is a non-Black Mexican American in this country, to say that I take personal responsibility for every vote that I have taken...”
2/ “...vote that I have taken that has contributed to the expansion of law enforcement and those legal systems at the expense of community based investments.

And I owe it to all of you to say that I am sorry for those votes.”
3/ “I now have an opportunity, and so do my colleagues, to reverse and correct those past votes. Those past choices. Because we know that the current public safety model does not produce safety for Black, Indigenous and Brown people.”

The OPA just ruled that this was LAWFUL AND PROPER because the officer claimed he didn’t see the child. #seattleprotests #seattlepolice #AbolishPolice
Whether accidental or intentional, police should not be allowed to mace children in the face.

Period.
The OPA themselves even called the decision “unpalatable” but couldn’t be bothered to suggest any policy recommendations that would pretend to try to prevent this moving forward. Total complicity.

Alright, let's do this thread on Nikkita's interview with Omari on Dow Constantine's Press Conference from yesterday!

Y'all know the drill, so let's begin!

Link to the youtube vid here:

#SeattleProtests
So context: Dow's speech was related to his upcoming budget, which includes "proposed investments in anti-racism and criminal legal system transformation."

Let the record show that Nikkita also looks fresh and her lipstick is poppin'.
Omari: what was your main takeaway?

N: thrilled the county is starting to address these ills, "at the same time..." an erasure of the past 10 years of advocacy by groups on the ground who have been fighting for this and "a desire to see more dollars attached to those words."

Thread: @BLMSeattleKC isn't affiliated w/ the global org. Isn't an official chapter & is taking consistent action is support of police. The bail fund has stopped & secret meetings w Durkan have continued. They were not responsible for No New Youth Jail. #seattleprotest
They retracted their support of KCEN.
They backed Carmen Best when Best was gassing the City & criminalizing Black Youth.
They are attacking the Council using the BLM name while siding w Durkan who vetoes efforts for police accountability. #blm #seattleprotests
This is concerning bc hundreds of thousands were donated. I shared their page. Promoted them. Worked on the census project w/ them. Worked on getting visits done for the ppl they were supporting on bail. As of 7/13, there was no more bail support. #blm #seattleprotests

Today's tips are going towards my health ins, and A/D meds b/c it's still a thing in a pandemic.
Reminder that the vote on overriding the veto is currently not on the docket today, HOWEVER I am assuming most comments in the first 20 minutes will be related to the Mayor's veto of the amended 2020 budget.

And that is where we start today!

#SeattleProtests #SeaCouncil
And now we have an amendment to the introduction and referral calendar, for two bills not provided by 5pm last Friday. The first amendment 119878, is approval to enter a collective bargaining agreement between the City and the local machinists union.

CJ TV is traveling the country with Momma Bird, who doxxed a Black leader in Seattle and is suspected to be working with the police.

Quick thread on No Charges Filed (NCF). The majority of ppl arrested since the beginning of the uprising have not had charges filed. A VERY important thing to remember is that these charges(or others) CAN be filed in the future.
#BLM #JailSupport #seattleprotests
In our 5+ year history we've seen the state not file charges on protest related cases, and then bring those charges back 1 to 1.5 years later. The KC/City Attorney offices are under no legal obligation to not prosecute charges in the future, regardless of what they say today.
Risk assessment is about having all the info to make informed decisions. We ask that you keep these future charges in mind while engaging with the movement. We would never tell people to be more quiet or take less risks-just to keep things in mind and be prepared for the future…

I saw a sign yesterday at the #Seattleprotest that I've been mulling over, and I've decided I need to talk about it. This might get long and might be vaguely disorganized, and please bear with me - it's important. 1/22
“Empathy is not allyship.”

One more time for emphasis: Empathy is NOT allyship. 2/22
Bluntly - it doesn’t matter if you feel bad about events or feel pity for the people involved *if you aren’t willing to actively do something about it*. It doesn’t matter. “Feeling bad” about events happening is irrelevant. Feeling bad is the embarrassingly bare minimum. 3/22

So clearly today is not the day we get to have a life. Catching up now, but 11th & Pine (once again) is a major friction point between protesters and police. We've seen flash bangs, pepper spray and blast balls all used in the last few minutes.

Watch: twitch.tv/SeattleProtest…
Police are now trying shoot pepper spray through the front line umbrella brigade.

We've heard repeated reports that flashbangs have lobbed into the crowds and that media have been targeted by both pepper spray and rubber bullets.
