@ryanlepic opening with acknowledging three linguists important to our field who recently passed away: Meir, Dotter and Elman
#SignCAFE1 Image
@ryanlepic suggests instead of "lexicalization":
Entrenched = structured, recurring chunk of language
Efficient = reduced form

These things are gradient rather than categorical

@ToxicMaple presenting work on iconicity in the visual modality: can gestures of hearing non-signers give us answers to cross-linguistic similarity of #signlanguages?
#SignCAFE1 Image
'whiskers' = 'cat'
'claws' = 'cat'
'walk' + 'ears' = 'cat'
*audibly meowing* = 'cat' (though excluded b/c sound ≠ sign)
@olgacapirci asking @ToxicMaple if they'll use the recorded silent gestures for e.g. comprehension studies. Fortunately, @ToxicMaple says: "That's other work in process!" So much papers to look forward to!

Most express Ground-Figure (not Figure-Ground). "you don't say 'the book has a table underneath it'!" but information about referents is important.

#SignCAFE1 Image
Signers all agree that there is age variation in BSL: older signers fingerspell more, younger signers use more English structure (SSE) #SignCAFE1 Image
In conclusion, signers are aware of variation and have opinions about variation and change (some good, some bad), and attitudes are important for the view on language vitality

@linasigns, @ryanlepic & @bananabull: Previous research on LOOK-AT in ASL was not based on corpus data, so we compiled an internet corpus, and we think the sign is grammaticalizing and corresponds to the 'I was like' construction Image
LOOK-AT is moving from vision to reaction. The path from perception verb to cognition verb is well known from spoken languages.
