Thread: Here's some interesting maths, #StKevinsCollege playing fields alone are worth more than $300million, this private asset paid for by taxpayers who subsidise each student $7000 per year.
#StKevins boasts a 5.5hectare private sports ground, the Taroonga Sports Fields, the land owned by the school. Before St Kevins bought the site it was earmarked for high-density housing due to being within walking distance of Tooronga train station. smh.com.au/business/st-ke…
A sq metre of land in Toorak currently sells for about $6000 (similar to inner city Sydney) which makes the value of the land $330million, that is 55000 sq metres x $6000persqm =$330 million. This isn't a public asset like govt schools but a private asset.

Interesting aside on #stkevins. In 2015, when the Royal Commission into sexual abuse was at its height, headmaster Stephen F. Russell wasn’t just providing character references for sex predator Peter Kehoe. Mr Russell also sent out a July 13 statement to the old boys.
In that statement, Mr Russell said that the Christian Brothers — not St Kevin’s — were responsible for sexual abuse cases that occurred prior to 2008.

This statement raises important questions that need to be addressed.

For instance...
Why separate the Christian brothers from the school? Is it because the school has the money and the assets? Why deny old boys access to the level of support St Kevin’s could provide? Was the school worried about financial exposure? Here’s part of the statement. Image

THREAD: Thinking about #StKevins business. About way they & other #Catholic schools handled #Pell. Or same-sex marriage. Or @BishopComensoli re risking jail to avoid reporting hearing of child abuse in confessional. Thinking about all parents/staff/alumni of schools...
who contact me privately to express to express deep dismay. I want to say this to those parents/staff/alumni/students: Only way for likes of these schools, @BishopComensoli & @AnthonyFisherOP to hear all the disquiet you so desperately feel is to make yourselves publicly heard.
I think of bravery of traumatised people who cast their shame (it’s not their shame, though, it’s Church’s shame) aside to speak of what was done to them. To endure unbearable legal proceedings. It would be nice if the people who speak out behind scenes would also show courage.

A few more things about #StKevins. In 2015, the school responded to the Royal Commission by putting out a statement that effectively washed its hands of sex abuse against old boys prior to 2008, directing victims to the Christian Brothers for "support, care & advice".
That statement was outrageous. Those old boys were sexually abused by Christian Brothers, but those Brothers were employed by St Kevin's. It made me wonder whether this was partly an attempt to sandbag the school against legal action.
By 2017, the school belatedly attempted to address historic sex abuse. An event was held at the school, the teachers and board members, two Year 12s attended, and an apology was read out. I'm not questioning whether the apology was sincere.
