THREAD on flooding in Leeds and across Northern communities, and why it’s time for the Government to finally act. πŸ‘‡ (1/10)
In 2015, towns and cities across the North of England, including Kirkstall in my constituency, experienced unprecedented floods. These were devastating for local residents and businesses, costing the Leeds City Region more than Β£500 million. (2/10) Image
In the aftermath of the 2015 floods, the Government assured Northern communities, including Leeds, that it would act to stop similar devastation happening again. I welcomed this and looked forward to working with the Gvt to get effective flood defences for the North. (3/10)

Still in Birmingham after @NetZeroUK #ClimateAssemblyUK thanks to #StormCiara but I'm relaxed!

Again, *such* an experience.

All talks here climateassembly.uk/meetings/weeke…

And some reflections from me - thread...

@ChiefExecCCC @watsonjim2 @lwhitmarsh @involveUK
First: AMAZING job by @involveUK and team, both logistics and facilitation.

This weekend I worked on the 'In The Home' strand, with the brilliant @kaela leading relaxed and inclusive debate.

Even when the storm wreaked travel havoc, the team sorted it, & were still smiling.
This weekend we were mainly working in smaller groups. My group looked at how to get to zero carbon in the home - helped by a brilliant speaker line-up (more on that below).

I liked the groups - less formal, and chance for detailed discussion between participants & speakers.

I'm on the way home from the Citizen's Assembly @NetZeroUK. Some thoughts from me. Firstly what an honour to be able to speak at such an event. The scale of it and organisation was way beyond what I was expecting. Total respect to everyone @MillerJDavid @Bankfieldbecky etc
Goes to show how tough deliberative approaches can be but clearly huge value. Onto heat. My presentation was one of the toughest I've ever given. Never before have I spoken at length to a group of strangers about heat decarb. And what a pleasant surprise!
My talk was red carded (stopped for a question). And what a cracker, how can heat pumps work below 0 degreesC? I think I explained kinetic energy and absolutely zero adequately but I have never been asked that, even by a student (sorry physics, I hope it was OK).

⚠️ This deep low will create strong winds on Sunday, but also a storm surge, which will travel down the North Sea coast overnight and into Monday.

We're monitoring this carefully, and are putting plans in place to close the #ThamesBarrier on Monday morning if required.
For any licenced mudlarks on the #Thames, there's a particularly low low tide tomorrow, as #StormCiara is effectively sucking the sea water away from us, with a negative surge of around a metre.

L/W at North Woolwich - 09.30
L/W at @TowerBridge - 10.30

But be very careful!
An unusually low low tide at the #ThamesBarrier this morning. #StormCaira is effectively sucking water away from the #Thames Estuary today.

But we’ll have to see the consequences tomorrow, with a very high tide forecast.

We’re making plans to close the Barrier should we need to
