So, the YouGov survey that UNFPA based a lot of its 2023 State of World Population Report on helpfully has the toplines posted here: docs.cdn.yougov.com/xn0kwsbzum/UNF…
You might think that "being worried about low fertility" is associated with "being worried about loss of traditional culture" or "being worried about the rise of specific ethnic groups."

But across the 8 countries UNFPA/YouGov surveyed, that's not the case. No correlation! Image
By far the most "worried about fertility" country surveyed was Japan--- but it ALSO had the lowest rate of particularistic concerns!

On the other hand, France had BY FAR the highest rate of particularistic concerns--- yet rather little worry about low birth rates! Image

nbd, just huge increases in how many american young adults are high or tripping, i'm sure it's fine and progress is leading us to a joyful utopia nida.nih.gov/news-events/ne…
since 2011, the share of young adults using marijuana *almost every day* has almost doubled, from 6% to 11%.

even if marijuana has no longer term effects, that's still a huge increase in the total person hours spent essentially useless to others or to your own self-improvement
increasingly when i talk to groups of young people and they ask about keys to success i really emphasize they need to stop doing all the drugs and the drinking and the porn and the games. stop. maybe low-to-moderate doses are in principle fine, but you have no capability to stop.

1. A typically great piece that also links to this recent deep-dive by @dylanmatt on the poli sci literature on canvassing and gotv: vox.com/21366036/canva…
2. One piece of background context to pieces like these is that a cohort of young progressive data people, of whom @davidshor is a leading example, have for a few years now been promulgating the notion that door-knocking is a lib indulgence and inefficient vote-getter.
3. Their arguments had begun to influence the thinking of journalists in their orbit but hadn't quite coalesced as a new public-facing #Take to counter the narrative of an Obama-'08-birthed renaissance of Dem field ops. Then God decided to launch a natural experiment via Covid.

Beto is going to generate a lot of Takes and then there will be a backlash to the Takes and then a backlash to the backlash and a backlash to the backlash to the backlash and all of that is only going to generate even more Takes.
That is potentially quite a helpful dynamic if you're one of 15-20 candidates running for the nomination and trying to stand out in a crowded field. 53eig.ht/2LPAavx
Forgot to use the opportunity to re-up my own recent Beto #Take. 53eig.ht/2ER9MA0

Voter enthusiasm/engagement is very high in the new Pew poll, with 61% of voters saying they're more enthusiastic than usual to vote in the midterms. This question is usually a pretty good predictor of overall national turnout. pewrsr.ch/2ONPD0q
Note, however, that GOP historically quite high by midterm standards -- it's just that Democratic enthusiasm is totally off the charts.
A pretty good #take is that with base turnout already expected to be quite high, the parties should spend the final 6 weeks of the campaign appealing to swing voters instead.
