In Estonia, the number of new corona infections peaked on the first day of the month-long lockdown. The health authority reported positive tests within one day in 1957. The previous record was 1571.
For a long time, Estonia with its 1.3 million inhabitants came through the pandemic more gently than many other EU countries. But now the Baltic Sea state is badly affected and, according to the EU authority ECDC, currently has one of the highest infection rates in Europe.
This is due to the rapid spread of the UK strain of coronavirus, which is believed to be more contagious than the original form.

The measures are to be discussed this week and next. Estonia, with its 1.3 million inhabitants, has so far recorded 5,464 confirmed corona infections and 73 deaths related to the virus.
