THE GREAT RESET: Over 200,000 people have been laid off in the #tech industry this year, and the flood of new talent has started to change the job market.

Check out Blind's exclusive research - a thread šŸ§µ:
1/ The Great Resignation and the ease of wage hikes when changing jobs may be over.

56% of U.S. professionals said they would accept the same or LESS pay in a new role, per an April 2023 survey by Blind

2/ The perceived weakness of the job market is why many say they're now willing to accept lower pay.

45% cited market concernsā€”more than those who picked company culture, return-to-office policy, or even the need for a work visa as their top reason COMBINED Image

Here's a thing about #WFH and #gamedev:

Things weren't going great at a lot of places in the years before covid. Delays, disappointments, big dreams, bad plans, believing Unreal/Unity was going to solve everything...
Covid came along and became a convenient scapegoat for all of our problems but it was the car that hit the cancer patient on the way to the hospital.
I do NOT believe that WFH is inherently better (though I do work with teams or great, smart people in 3 different timezones, who definitely wouldn't all up and move to Seattle if forced.)

I actually miss the office and being in one last week was great. Hybrid would be my ideal.

Another indicator that #WFH is permanent: public transit journeys stabilizing at 35% below 2019 levels.

This raises concerns over the survival of public transit systems. Costs are heavily fixed - think train and subway networks - but revenue is way down with 35% less journeys.
Thanks for great comments.

Yes shopping (see figure), eating out and entertainment are almost back at pre-pandemic levels. So commuting must have dropped >35%.

Yes this is big cities - 30% NY, 30% DC, Chicago etc - so a heavy office commuting skew. So aligns with Kastle data.
Replying to @p_ganong on city variations. Below is NY which shows about at 50% drop adjusting for seasonality.

Generally you see transit systems with more rail and subway have bigger drops as more office commuters. Transit systems that are more bus focused have smaller drops.

Last week, Census released 2021 data giving us our first look at the spatial distribution of the transition to working from home. A tale of two Americas emerges. Those who could adjust to work from home, and those who could not.
A quick deep viz dive into the data...šŸ§µ

We see major #disparities in the share of the population that worked from home by race/ethnicity with White and Asian Americans able to WFH at much higher share than Black and Hispanic Americans regardless of city. Here a look at how WFH share varied across cities over 500k.
Some cities - DC and SF - had relatively high share of population WFH and also were relatively equitable. Other cities, like LA, Boston, and New York exhibit large disparities by race/ethnicity. This begs the question if income or accommodations are factors. Let's look at both.

As much as I love everyone FINALLY embracing remote work from anywhere, been in this game for a while nowā€¦

In 2016, I set out to build a globally competitive AI #startup from Sault Ste Marie, Canada.

Hereā€™s how that went:
I had a vision.
I had a dream.

I wanted to revitalize a steeltown with tech.

I wanted to prove that you could build best-in-class tech from ANYWHERE in the world. In 2016.

I was proven wrong.
I was literally laughed at by Toronto investors.

Most Waterloo investors didnā€™t believe my dreams could be possible up ā€œNorthā€.

I ultimately determined that local Soo investors would have been more likely to fund a cupcake shop than deep tech AI; despite endless attempts.

Freedom at work is a šŸ’Ž we all chase. It can be achieved with few simple practices.

Hereā€™s what my engineering manager taught me.

This helped me immensely, and never looked back again.

#workfromanywhere #WFH #remotework
ā€œWhatā€™s the status of the task, are you on track?ā€ kinda messages are the most annoying ones at work.

We always say ā€œGive me spaceā€.
We always say ā€œTrust meā€.

How to get that space? How to have someone trust in you?
Truth is ā€œTrust begins at 0ā€. We have to consciously build it. Once built, itā€™s like a fortress, ~never falls. It then yields to freedom, space & independence. And usually rewarded with more-responsibilities and ultimately leadership.

Who doesnā€™t want to be a leader, eh?

This is why Work from Home (#WFH) will succeed - as demonstrated by 'Telegraph writer and lead political analyst'

Would every office worker etc like an extra Ā£5,280 per year - post tax? Ie. a >Ā£10k pay rise for low income earners* or gradate tax payees?

šŸ§µ
Did you know that the average office worker spends Ā£5,280 /yr to go to work?

Did you know that margin tax rates for graduates earning above Ā£27k is 50% and for minimum wage income earners losing UC the rate is 44% - which is why you need ~ Ā£10k / yr - in pre tax income!
NB. there are tax rises coming next April, fuel increases and inflation kicking in - so all these 'go to work' costs will rise!

Equally, you can spend Ā£5k / yr savings on other things - maybe upgrade your home heating / insulation?

For some businesses, this is good news!

2) With extremely poor healthcare, education & digital infra in non mega urban locations nobody in their right mind will want to shift esp when it involves taking a salary cut. In the Indian context orgs may actually need to pay higher for people to move out of cities 3) When

Will WFH related HR and Management policies be a crucial factor in employee retention for firms ? COVID seems to be around much longer than we all hoped ;

Talking to some of my industry colleagues, especially at senior positions, I get to hear different voices.

#WFH

1/n
Ones who are good at delegation of work at office seemed more receptive to idea of longer WFH policies & may even be fine to perpetualise the arrangement.

Managers who prefer to see their reportees in front are less amenable to the idea, as they fear lack of control &

2/n
mask their insecurities with reasoning of productivity etc.

Employee perspective is very important while crystallising policies. Resources are more likely to evaluate job options more on HR policies concerning #WFH

Firms that have management push on accommodative #WFH

Announcement from @fordnation sank my heart today. As an ER doctor, person of color and #Scarborough native, I feel defeated šŸ˜¢. The measures are not going to get wave 3 under control. #BIPOC #ERdoc @SHNcares @torontolife @JustinTrudeau @SCMirror 1/
When I landed as an #immigrant in #Canada, my life started in #Scarborough. My parents (#heros) struggled to find jobs that matched their education. That didn't stop them from working hard / hustling even if it meant 2 jobs at times to keep bills paid and food on the table. 2/
My family lived in an apt building that had mostly racialized/middle-low income families (#affordability). Not much social distancing when large crowds wait for elevators (#EssentialWorkers) or use the shared laundry facilities. This pandemic brings back those vivid memories 3/

Question for the #WFH crowd, technically this is #marchbreak in Ontario; pre covid, this would be a quiet meeting week out of respect for parents of young kids and general family time. But not this year...1/
I have more meetings and calls this week than average which is fine for me as my kids are out of school, but what exactly are parents of young kids doing this week? Shouldnā€™t we all have hit a bit of a ā€˜pauseā€™ button? Which leads me to another question...2/
If the kids are not going back to in person learning next week, but parents all have to work, whether from home or in factories, warehouses, processing plants, who exactly is looking after the children? Has the whole province magically time travelled back to the 1950ā€™s? 3/

#WFH fatigue is real ā€” which is why I'm challenging my team to streamline or cut back on select meetings so we actually have the time and space to think and innovate. Don't know where to start? Here are 3 exercises we use at @googlecloud to help prioritize everyone's time:
Exercise 1:
Pick three meetings in the next calendar week that you can shorten, cancel/decline, or group with another meeting. Read my comment to this post for tips on how to pick which meetings you should cancel.
To help identify these meetings, ask yourself:
- Do you have any meetings where the key decision-makers arenā€™t able to join the meeting, or where information critical to achieving the meeting goal is not yet available?
- Is your participation necessary? What is your role?

THREAD āš  Effective 12:01 am March 13, the Avalon region will move to Alert Level 4 and areas outside the Avalon will move to Alert level 3.
2ļøāƒ£ We must be mindful that while our provincial epidemiology is in a very good place, the same cannot be said outside the province. We therefore remain at risk of importation of the virus and the variants of concern that are now in greater circulation.
3ļøāƒ£ We saw first-hand how rapidly the B117 variant spread in our province. Thatā€™s why we must ease restrictions slowly. We will closely monitor the epidemiology as we open to ensure that there is no increased transmission.

Whatā€™s even more fascinating is that the Real Estate sector has been the most resistant to innovation.
