When Will the Pandemic End? Great question.

An excellent discussion in @nytimes @nytopinion w/ @JenniferNuzzo @VirusesImmunity @PepperMarion

A few excerpts, mashups & extrapolations below. /1

There's no defined “end” of a pandemic. How it will play out in the coming months and years is uncertain, particularly as the virus continues to evolve.

Continued surveillance, public health vigilance, and access to/use of masks, tests, treatments & vaccines will be critical. /2
Although it may feel like Covid is now like annual flu, data show it is still causing (MANY) more hospitalizations & deaths than the flu does; keeping up with vaccines & boosters is so important. /3

🧵It’s critical to do all we can to manage the #Omicron surge. At the same time, we must re-position our national strategy to be more proactive & plan for a normal life that is able to manage #COVID like other respiratory viruses. 1/

@ZekeEmanuel @celinegounder @llborio @drdavidmichaels @mtosterholm & I present 3 viewpoints in @JAMA_current to reframe the strategy on COVID to bring #Omicron down while strengthening our tools & systems to transition from crises to control. 2/
1st paper: @celinegounder @mtosterholm @ZekeEmanuel discuss a pathway towards a "New Normal"; to reframe COVID in context with other respiratory diseases that we manage on a regular basis. 3/

1/ Q: Is it true that #Omicron is less severe than previous variants?

A: We HOPE so, but we don’t know yet. The evidence so far is mixed.

dearpandemic.org/is-omicron-les…
2/ We are WAY past due for some good variant news. But pinning our #Omicron hopes on a less virulent variant is not wise for 2 reasons:

1) It might not be less severe in those who are “immune naïve” (neither vaccinated nor with a previous infection—still millions of people).
3/ 2) Many more infections *even* if less severe can still lead to an avalanche of hospitalizations and deaths, and the risk of long Covid.

@AdamJKucharski raised this last December w/ the rise of Alpha:

2/ And by buckle up, I mean BOOST-UP. And take other sensible precautions, especially leading up to the holidays. Things are not looking so good.
3/ Omicron has a significant foothold here, currently estimated at over 30% of current cases in the UK and doubling every 2-3 days 😳. In London where Omicron is a whopping 60+% of the cases, Omicron cases are adding to, but not displacing Delta…yet .

(1) The pandemic is triggering events like this worldwide.

Those who say "share the vaccines with all" do not realize how that would work in practice.

If the US becomes unable to afford to send aid to its existing recipient countries, those countries will be even worse off.
(2) Even if every "spare" vaccine in the world was re-routed to countries that don't have enough, it still would not prevent the existing and coming catastrophes.

And there is a sound logical AND ETHICAL case for not doing that, too.
(3) I'm saying this from a country (NZ) that is way behind on it's own vaccine program and is vulnerable to a large number of preventable Covid deaths if the next 90 days don't go well.

So I hardly have a vested interest against such countries.

Again, a cable news host has used an anti-vaccine trope that discourages vaccination. This time "If you are #vaccinated, why do you care if others aren't." This thread explains herd immunity & why high #vaccine uptake matters. #tuckercarlsonmustgo 1/7
The MOST important thing your #vaccine will do is protect you. In this same way, the MOST important thing your car's brakes do is stop your car. 2/7 #ThisIsOurShot #WeCanDoThis #CarGuysImmunize #VaccinesWork
If you are less likely to get sick because you are #vaccinated , you are also less likely to get others sick. You could break the chain of transmission, and your #vaccine protects those around you! (And if your car brakes work, you won't plow into other cars!) 3/7

But look at all these terrible deaths on #VAERS, #TuckerCarlson says? Not so fast! Look at the disclaimer, first. Just because it was reported does not mean #vaccines were the cause!
First of all, let's emphasize that #VAERS is a useful tool, but not for folks looking to confirm their worst fears about #vaccines. It's mostly for the nerds in public health to detect super, super, super rare side effects as early as possible.

Thank you, @alastanford, for joining me earlier this week in conversation with the COVID-19 Community Corps.

Hearing about the work you & the #BlackDoctorsCOVID19Consortium have been doing to vaccinate thousands of people in Philadelphia was inspiring.

You told us the motto for your community outreach is, “We’re calling to check on you.”

America needs more healers like you & your colleagues. /2
We are building a people-powered movement to help inform, empower, & vaccinate people.

Dr. Stanford did not wait for people to ask her. She stepped up & built an extraordinary apparatus. /3

The U.S. needs a vaccination rejuvenation. As @jenkatesdc, @joshmich and @larry_levitt estimate, it will only be a few weeks before all adults enthusiastic about getting a vaccine will have already received one. Let's look at the data and make suggestions:
kff.org/policy-watch/s…
Great thread here on the "vaccine enthusiasm frontier" or "vaccine wall" and how it will vary widely based on geography. As seen from vaccinespotter.org data, pharmacies in many U.S. counties are seeing a proliferation of open appointments.

So why does it appear that the vaccination campaign is losing momentum? One of the major reasons is that the J&J vaccine, which has been paused, accounted for ~400,000 doses a day at its peak. As @juliettekayyem notes, we all expected this wall.

Part of my summer reading is @WmGermano 's book on getting your dissertation published as a book. Here are my key takeaways:
1. "Writing isn't a record of your thinking. It is your thinking" (28) so you have to write to think, come up with ideas, research. etc. (1)
My takeaway here is that we should not think of our writing as a separate activity. Keep writing, reading, thinking, exploring everyday.
2. "avoid telling the reader that what you have has been, astonishingly, overlooked"
"Better by far to have an excellent command of mechanics, a sense of storytelling, and a clear understanding of your material" (32)
In my own words, do rather than defend (3)
