"The American people deserve nine justices on the Supreme Court." - Vice President Mike Pence, standing beside Judge Amy Coney Barrett, in the presence of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell
In 2016, McConnell blockaded Obama's nomination of Judge Garland, turning SCOTUS into a de facto 8-justice court, with Ted Cruz and John McCain flirting with making it permanent (and shrinking) under a President Clinton, all while Dems ran their futile #WeNeedNine campaign
Sen. Cruz, with Judge Barrett sitting beside him, says her fast confirmation is necessary to prevent a 4-4 SCOTUS split on any election-related legal dispute.

"This is not about any particular candidate, this is about having a Supreme Court that will follow the law," Cruz said.

Then as well as now, it's all about power and politics to achieve a greater principle - a lasting SCOTUS majority
GOP had 54-member majority in 2016, and an 11-9 majority on Judiciary Committee.

Graham/Flake woulda felt compelled to approve an Obama nom (add Hatch for Garland), and send to floor.

Kirk, Collins, Murkowski woulda added their votes to confirm.

Dems woulda turned court left.
McConnell stepped in with his made-up principle to protect his members from the consequences of their prior commitments that they themselves wanted to abandon (but on their own had no good reason to) when the balance of the Court for a generation was finally at stake.

As we watch people splitting hairs, switching sides, charging hypocrisy, remember that this is what it's always really been about, no less now than in 2016: latimes.com/opinion/op-ed/… Image
I know messaging matters in politics, but it's not my job to prop up messaging that disintegrates should roles be reversed, like 2016's #WeNeedNine and 2020's #HonorHerFinalWords (or whatever the hashtag will become), even if they're reacting to opponents' first-strike bad faith.
These SCOTUS fights, like most all politics, are all about power, whether to be used for good or ill for our democracy. And I'd prefer our politicians to be honest about that. Indeed, it's a journalist's job to cut through the workshopped messaging and demand they be.

You had to know this was a coming. Four short years ago, countless Dems, media folks & bluechecks were telling you #WeNeedNine on the Supreme Court.

Yet now, as we head into an election that’ll surely be contested their convictions have evaporated.

It’s a long list.
To kick it off, we’ll start with none other than the man who led the #WeNeedNine push, @BarackObama.

Is it no longer “irresponsible” to not consider a SCOTUS nominee before one is even announced, Mr. President?
And what say you, @HillaryClinton? If @realDonaldTrump announces his nominee, will you agree that he has “met his responsibility” as well? And that the Senate should do the same?

I agree with what my Democratic colleagues have said for years: #WeNeedNine Supreme Court justices. dailycaller.com/2019/03/25/rub…
Like the rest of the Democratic party platform, this court-packing scheme is nothing more than a sloppy regurgitation of a 1930s failure. Image
Just as FDR’s blatant disregard for presidential term limits necessitated a constitutional amendment then, efforts to revive his court-packing plan necessitate an amendment now.
