I have no followers so I'm sure this post will be a waste of #TwitterSpace. I have personally been blessed and cursed by the whole medical system most of my life. To start off, my father shot himself when I was 7 due to mental health issues. Back then depression and bipolar 👇🏼
was treated with drugs like Valium. He had a really low moment and boom. “Tell Roger I’m sorry” is what they told me he said. I was introduced to #oxycontin at the ripe age of 15. My first dose was 40mg and I was sick as a dog for hours. That would trigger a lifelong battle 👇🏼
With addiction to #opiods. After my mom abandoned me when I was 16 and after some time in a homeless shelter
then rehab, I began to get my life together at age 22. 23 im married and doing ok and wreck an #ATV (4-wheeler) off a mountain in #NorthCarolina and become #paralyzed👇🏼

I have been noticing more issues with low iron amongst my obstetrics and gynaecology patients lately so thought we should do a thread on iron...

Why is iron important?
Why can iron be low?
How can you get more iron?

#iron #anemia #pregnancy #periods #ObGynTwitter #MedTwitter
Iron (Fe) is a super important mineral for us.

Iron the centre of the heme group, which sits in the centre of each subunit of the hemoglobin protein structure.

Hemoglobin proteins pack the inside of our red blood cells.
Iron at the core of each hemoglobin molecule binds oxygen.

There are ~260 million hemoglobin molecules in each red blood cell and we each have ~25 trillion red blood cells in circulation!

This is our transport system for oxygen to get from our lungs to our cells and organs.

Iron-deficiency anemia: 5 interesting facts

1. The richest source of iron is meat.
For vegans and vegetarians, the best source of iron is blackstrap molasses. Other good sources of iron are lentils, tofu, spinach and soybeans.

#MedTwitter #InternalMedicine #MedEd
2. What is pagophagia?
Half of patients with moderate iron-deficiency #Anemia develop pagophagia. Usually, they crave ice to suck or chew. Occasionally, patients prefer cold celery or other cold vegetables in lieu of ice.
3. Severe anemia may cause myocardial ischemia and coronary insufficiency. Patients can present with heart failure. General examination reveals koilonychia, angular stomatitis and gingivitis (fissures at the corners of mouth).

1/n A fascinating article came out this summer that argues for a plant-forward omni diet, and it contains a very inflammatory headline:

"Debunking the #vegan myth: The case for a plant-forward omnivorous whole-foods diet"

Note author Loren Cordain, a paleo proponent Image

The abstract:

"Veganism is without evolutionary precedent in Homo sapiens species. Strict adherence to a #vegan diet causes predictable deficiencies in nutrients including vitamins B12, B2, D, niacin, iron, iodine, zinc, high-quality proteins, omega-3, and calcium."

Let's review the images quickly because they show some of these dangers.

Humans belong to blood groups 'A', 'B', 'AB', or 'O'.

Also, we're either
- Rhesus positive (Rh+), or
- Rhesus negative (Rh-)

The "+" or "-" sign usually attached to your blood group represents your rhesus status!
3/

Being Rh+ or Rh- depends on you having certain proteins called #RhesusAntigens on the surface of your red blood cells.

If you have the rhesus antigens, you're Rh+

If you don't have the rhesus antiges, you're Rh-

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT RHESUS INCOMPATIBILITY

If the #RhesusStatus of your partner or spouse is not compatible with yours & you do nothing about it, it can lead to repeated miscarriages, jaundice in your baby, & stillbirths.

A thread 🧵

{Share to create awareness!}
Every person's blood group can either be A, B, AB or O.

Similarly, we are all classified as Rhesus Positive (Rh+) or Rhesus Negative (Rh-). This depends on whether you have a protein called #RhesusAntigen on the surface of our red blood cells or not.
If you have rhesus antigens on your red blood cells, you are RHESUS POSITIVE.

If you don't have rhesus antigens on your red blood cells, you are RHESUS NEGATIVE.

This is just so silly. In the 19th century, there was a panic in the medical profession (and among social commentators) about women becoming ill with neurological and "nervous" conditions because they were overworking their brains/nerves, which were naturally weaker than men's.
This “fact” was used to bolster the argument in favor of stopping women's formal education after age 16 and most certainly not letting them enroll in university.
